Neighbour knocking to find parcel

Dotdotdot21 · 17/05/2022 23:24

Just had an unknown man knock at my door claiming his parcel had been delivered to my house .
He lives in the road behind . He was looking at his phone and claims app said parcel was delivered to here.
when I asked what the parcel was he said furniture.
I was polite but after he had gone I am
thinking why would I take furniture in for a house in the next street for someone I don’t know? Have I just been accused of stealing ? The app clearly never said a number but the map on it directed it to our house.
Am I being unreasonable to be annoyed.

I wfh and take in all sorts of parcels usually on the assumption that DH has ordered them. I have on occasion ended up with someone else’s parcel, even though most of the time I check and make sure it’s for us. Sometimes if I’m busy on a call I can’t be too conscientious. So I can see it’s not impossible. A neighbour’s parcel ended up at the same address the next town over!

Luminousnose · 18/05/2022 07:46

I can’t get over the fact that anyone would legitimately take. a parcel in for a street behind them , so a completely different road name . Why would you do that - you would say that’s the wrong address

I can easily understand this happening. I rarely check the address of any parcels we have delivered until after I take them into the house - I live rurally though and have never had a wrongly delivered parcel so just assume it’ll be correct. If it was an evening delivery, I might well not do anything about it until the following morning.

As PPs have said flat pack furniture can be in surprisingly small packages. Obviously if it was a bed or sofa, I’d realise there was a mistake!

Cleothecat75 · 18/05/2022 07:47

Imagine you had taken in the parcel and he didn’t come to collect it. You’d now be frothing at tripping over a large parcel in your hallway. He couldn’t win really could he. It’s not his fault the app is crap.

Antarcticant · 18/05/2022 07:47

He continued to look at the app and say it was showing as here.

For some reason, people often exhibit disbelief over having the wrong address. I've had a few occasions of people turning up with food deliveries (I live on one of those streets which is confusingly numbered/laid out) and the conversation goes like this:

'Pizza?'
'No, we haven't ordered a pizza'
(Looks at phone) 'Pizza for Shaun?'
'No, we haven't ordered a pizza and no one of that name lives here'
(Looks at phone again) 'Ham and mushroom with extra red peppers?'
'We haven't ordered a pizza`
(Looks at phone again and finally retreats, looking as though he doesn't really believe me).

Snowiscold · 18/05/2022 07:48

I take in parcels all the time. I don’t look at who they are for. I don’t mind. There’s nothing odd about this scenario. 9:30 is pushing it in terms of lateness, and I wouldn’t like that, though. The app did not accuse you of stealing. Completely bizarre that that’s your thought.

TeaStory · 18/05/2022 07:39

You do sound really worked up, and a bit paranoid.

GPS (assuming that’s what the app he was on uses) can be a bit off, even Find My Phone can sometimes glitch and show someone a long way from where they are.

Lots of people would take in a parcel on behalf of a neighbour over the back, I’ve done it. It’s not as bizarre a thing as you are making out.

You keep saying the company told him that you stole his parcel, but they didn’t say that at all.

You’re overthinking and I doubt anything at all will come of this.

where do I say the company said I stole his parcel ? I said the app showed the parcel as here.
There seems to be a few people telling me I’m worked up , I’m just bemused by the whole process. I don’t get worked up as you put it.
I have had hundreds or Amazon parcels delivered in the last few years and never lost one . I have had furniture delivered always came here. So no I have o experience of loosing parcels.
And I would never take in parcels for people other than my direct neighbour who I know well. People should have parcels delivered to a shop et if they are not going to be in.

Sometimes the simplest explanations are the correct ones! Everyone getting hysterical about him knocking so late, he probably just got home from work and discovered his parcel wasn’t there. Nothing dodgy.

I had to do the opposite yesterday, got home and found a parcel for a block of flats about 10 doors down had been left in my porch. So I popped round there and dropped it off about 9pm. Now I’m imagining the Mumsnet hysteria about a suspicious woman showing up with a parcel at 9pm 😁

Snowiscold · 18/05/2022 07:53

OP, you specifically said that:
The app saying I had stole it , because no honest person would not accept a parcel for a house in next street. If the parcel had an address on it an honest person would say that’s not my address

You said it in your posts at 00:38 and 00:48 for a start!

You’ve been up all night posting about this.

Deliveries often don’t come on a set day, so it’s not always possible to be sure to be in when a parcel is delivered.

Dotdotdot21 · 17/05/2022 23:40

Kite22 would you take furniture in for someone you didn’t know in a road behind your house ? Who would do that ?
That would be weird, I’m not a neighbour , I’m in the next street .
The app Is clearly not accurate if it’s showing the parcel here. The whole thing is odd .

Yes if my app said it had been delivered there I would go and knock. When a parcel goes missing they always say to check with neighbours. Seriously you need to stop looking to be offended.

Butchyrestingface · 18/05/2022 08:00

The app saying I had stole it , because no honest person would not accept a parcel for a house in next street.

The app accused you of "stealing" - get a hold of yourself! 🙄

It sounds like you have no experience of ever being asked to take a parcel in for someone (lucky you). One of my near neighbours came to my door last week saying she'd just had a message from Amazon saying her parcel was with me (It wasn't). Away she went to contact Amazon and that was the end of the matter.

But maybe I should have been posting on her about evil old Amazon accusing me of theft?

Schulte · 18/05/2022 08:03

‘People should have parcels delivered to a shop et if they are not going to be in.’

This is hilarious, and increasingly bizarre. Around here it’s completely normal to take in neighbours’ parcels. They come at random times you know. And yes they do quite often get delivered to the wrong address because we have two streets with similar names in this neighbourhood.

mycatisannoying · 18/05/2022 08:03

You're overthinking it. Massively.

CotDotten · 18/05/2022 08:07

Wow, this thread is exhausting.

Any budding script writers out there? I can see it on the big screen.

LucyLocketLostThePlot · 18/05/2022 08:19

YABU to be annoyed. Get over it. Move on.

diddl · 18/05/2022 08:26

I think one of the problems is delivery drivers not knowing the area.

Unless your addresses are similar, it would surely be odd to get something for another street wouldn't it?

Hear we have our name on the postbox or near the door so that at least is some point of reference!

No, she hasn't been up all night posting about this. She posted initially up to 1.13 when she was feeding the baby, and not again until 6 am.

Lockheart · 18/05/2022 08:51

"It said I stole his parcel!!" (Several times)

"I never said it said I stole it"

Absolutely brilliant.

silverbubbles · 18/05/2022 09:02

Poor bloke is just worried that he has lost his awaited delivery and he is desperately trying to find it!! I would do exactly the same thing!!

11pm is very late but perhaps he has no choice and figures 11pm might be better option than 5am......

Where have you got 11pm from? The guy came round at 9:30.

Fancylike · 18/05/2022 09:09

This thread is wild. OP, I think you actually did steal his package, which is why you’re being so defensive about the “app accusing you of stealing”. Now you’re canvassing to see if there’s a way your thieving ways could be exposed!

At any rate, I’m sure your demeanor has put the poor guy off ever returning. Hope the brand sends him out a new lamp/couch/kitchen.

yellowsuninthesky · 18/05/2022 09:11

It's fine to be annoyed at an app (or rather the humans behind it who design them so badly). Life would be better if humans designed technology better!

ManateeFair · 18/05/2022 09:18

He hasn’t accused you of anything! He’s literally just looking for his parcel which GPS tracking from the courier has told him has been delivered, possibly to your house. What do you expect him to do?! Of course he’s going to ask if it was sent to you - if he doesn’t check, he can’t take it up with the courier. Grow up.
