To ask what time your DCs go to bed and their age?

Been living in a temporary house for a few weeks now - we’re here until our new house is ready. Have always lived in semi-detached where none of our main living space has adjoining walls with next door (lounge/bedrooms etc).
In this current house our lounge has an adjoining wall with the neighbour, as does our bedroom so for the first time I’m very aware of the noise from next door.

Really lovely family around the same age as DH and I. They have 2 children - ages 7y and 15m. Both of their children seem to go to bed around 10.30/11pm each night! It struck me as being pretty late but whatever works for their family I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️ Tonight I can hear the kids singing and laughing and it sounds like they’re watching a kids TV show of some kind 🤷🏻‍♀️ One with lots of songs lol

We just have 1 DS at 1.5years and he’s usually asleep by 7/7.30pm on a good night. Usually 8ish on a bad night.

Just curious really - what age are your DC and what time is “bedtime” in your house? 😊

@Ducksurprise yes I agree it's what works for your family.
I think most of us would love to have children who go to bed early but it's different for everyone.
Re the neighbours of the OP - that does seem late to me but the older child may be one who just needs less sleep and the baby could sleep during the day.

DS13 meant to be 11pm but not sure. He's a nightmare to get up in the morning

I'm always surprised when people have no rules at all for teens as young as 13/14.

They still have to be up for school and are unlikely to choose a bedtime that provides enough sleep at that age! I definitely wasnt allowed to be roaming the house in the middle of the night aged 13 🤣

Same. Throughout my school life I was never up much beyond 10pm.

fireandpaint · 17/05/2022 23:02

4 and 6 year old - both 7pm, although nearer to 8 at weekends.

JessesMum777888 · 17/05/2022 23:15

11 year old 10pm school and the night before a match.
not really bothered when he goes on other nights :)

stayathomer · 17/05/2022 23:24

7 yo and 9 yo around 8, 12yo coming under to 9, 14yo between 9 and 9.30 . We used to hear our old neighbours’ children late late too, and be astonished that the following morning they’d be in great form!!!

elliejjtiny · 17/05/2022 23:25

7 year old goes up at 9, usually asleep at 10:30. Wakes up naturally at 8:30 but on school days I wake him up at 8. 8 and 11 year olds go up at 9:30 and asleep by 10pm. Both up at 7:45-8am.

Threeboysandadog · 17/05/2022 23:26

I’m also surprised at how late some teens go to bed. I’ve always thought I was very lax with ds3 (15) who goes at 11pm on school nights and 12mn otherwise. His older brothers were always in bed by 10pm at secondary school. He doesn’t seem to need as much sleep as they did and doesn’t need to get up until 7:45am.

Esssa · 17/05/2022 23:30

14 month old, between 10 and 11pm. Usually wakes between 9.30 and 10.30am. Been roughly the same since birth. Means daddy sees her in the evening, I don't have to get up early or go to bed early as I go with her when she goes.

oceanskye · 17/05/2022 23:37

My 12 year old is supposed to be 9pm school nights but ends up around 9.30pm by the time he has organized himself, teeth etc. My 15 year old usually goes to bed when we do so around 10.30-11pm.

evtheria · 17/05/2022 23:41

8 year old: in bed at 7.30, allowed to read/listen to audiobook until I turn off lamp/stereo about 8.30-9. I usually hear the crashing of Lego though!

Goosey3 · 18/05/2022 00:24

@boronia Yeah, I agree! No idea of their sleep needs/nap routines 🤷🏻‍♀️ But the later bedtime seems to work for their family 😊

also agree with the person that said wake up times are important too. Mine is usually awake by 6am.

Such a huge range of responses 👍🏻😊 thanks all! So interesting to see how things work for you and your family 😊

4yo, 7.30, 7 if she’s really tired. Start the process half an hour before lights out, read stories etc

shivawn · 18/05/2022 03:46

7 month old, 9pm

CockSpadget · 18/05/2022 05:07

Nearly 11 year old 10pm weekdays, but he doesn't have to get up till 8am.

Dizzyhedgehog · 18/05/2022 05:52

DS5 goes to bed between 8pm and 9pm during the week. Always has done, since the age of about 2 weeks.
I wake him for kindergarten at 7am. He sometimes still naps their during the day but it's really rare. He used to have a three-hour nap at daycare until he was about 3 years old.

Darbs76 · 18/05/2022 06:25

Mine were never 7pm as I have always worked so more like 8-8.30 when they were young. I have a friend whose 3yr old goes to bed at 10-11pm every night. She’s never had a bedtime, she just goes to bed when they do. If she’s tired earlier she sleeps on the sofa. I said once she was at nursery she would be tired and in bed earlier- she’s not!

Crumpetloveliness · 18/05/2022 06:28

@Ducksurprise YNBU my four year old is in bed by 530 and normally asleep by 6pm. But then we have to wake up at 6am so ensures they get the twelve hours for the age group.

CoalCraft · 18/05/2022 06:38

18 months - bedtime starts around 7:15, usually complete by 7:45

daffodilandtulip · 18/05/2022 06:43

We had a 7:30pm bedtime for yeeearrrs!! 16yo is very fixed with 10pm lights out and gets up at 7am, whereas 13yo doesn't settle til gone 11pm and is up by 6am 🤷‍♀️

liveforsummer · 18/05/2022 06:46

Neither of my dc were ever ones to go off to bed at 7.30. Amazed at the dc going at that time at the age of 10 or later or having 5/6 on bed times at primary age. They must miss out on so much extra curricular stuff or just simple down time. I'd say the earliest the d ever gone on average is 9 (sometimes a bit earlier on a night with. Nothing on but later the one before with one of them at a late club. We get up at 6.30am although dd2, now 9 is an early riser and is often up and dressed while I'm still waking up myself.

ThisSeemsSilly · 18/05/2022 06:47

7 and 9 - in bed by 7.30. Lights out by 8. 10 yo- in bed by 8. No lights out rule as he’s usually out cold by 8.15.

They get up at 6.30am.

rainbowandglitter · 18/05/2022 06:50

12 yo goes to bed at 9.30/9.45 on school nights and morning alarm goes off at 6.20am. Weekends there's no set bed time

XmasElf10 · 18/05/2022 06:51

11 year old between 8 and 9 on a school night, by 10 on Fri / Sat and she’s normally tired then and very willing to go. She does read in bed sometimes for a bit.

southlondoner02 · 18/05/2022 06:56

9pm here for 11 year old.

Where I live it's really common for pre school kids to be up really late and sleep in late. So not uncommon to be up until 10/11 at night. Parents then adjust when the kids get to school age. We never did that but it has its pros and cons - you don't get any child free time in the evening but you get a lie in!
