To ask what time your DCs go to bed and their age?

Been living in a temporary house for a few weeks now - we’re here until our new house is ready. Have always lived in semi-detached where none of our main living space has adjoining walls with next door (lounge/bedrooms etc).
In this current house our lounge has an adjoining wall with the neighbour, as does our bedroom so for the first time I’m very aware of the noise from next door.

Really lovely family around the same age as DH and I. They have 2 children - ages 7y and 15m. Both of their children seem to go to bed around 10.30/11pm each night! It struck me as being pretty late but whatever works for their family I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️ Tonight I can hear the kids singing and laughing and it sounds like they’re watching a kids TV show of some kind 🤷🏻‍♀️ One with lots of songs lol

We just have 1 DS at 1.5years and he’s usually asleep by 7/7.30pm on a good night. Usually 8ish on a bad night.

Just curious really - what age are your DC and what time is “bedtime” in your house? 😊

Wow Duck that is really early. But if you know your child needs the sleep its best to ensure they get it so youre doing the right thing.

Is it a problem when they cant do school events/ brownies/ sport etc? ours often are still running when yours must be asleep!

3 year old goes up at 6.30 and usually fast asleep by 7.
7 year old goes up at 7.30 and usually asleep by 8.

they may have the very occasional later night for a special event but we certainly know about it from their grumpiness the next day.

And to add to that….

3 year old gets up at 7.30am and 7 year old wakes quite early (6.30 ish I think?) but reads until 8 when she is told to get up and dressed

UndertheCedartree · 17/05/2022 22:32

My 9yo gets ready for bed about 8pm. At 8.30 I read to her then she falls asleep listening to her Yoto.
My 15yo goes to bed around 11 or 12, apparently. I'm usually asleep before then!

UndertheCedartree · 17/05/2022 22:33

I've written 9, she's actually recently turned 10!

Lolly86 · 17/05/2022 22:35

8 year old DD in bed for around 7.30ish then listens to an audio book or reads til 8.30 latest. She is often asleep by 7.45/8
She has activities most days after school so needs her sleep

ouch12345 · 17/05/2022 22:35

5 & 3 both in bed at 7pm any later and we feel the wrath of the 5yo.

InChocolateWeTrust · 17/05/2022 22:35

I'm always surprised when people have no rules at all for teens as young as 13/14.

They still have to be up for school and are unlikely to choose a bedtime that provides enough sleep at that age! I definitely wasnt allowed to be roaming the house in the middle of the night aged 13 🤣

Notimeforaname · 17/05/2022 22:40

Yea from about 14 I wasn't told when to go to bed anymore.

Part of being a teenager then was staying up late to watch those things youd talk about at school the next day, wrecked 🤣

Ducksurprise · 17/05/2022 22:25

Everyone on here thinks iabu but mine have always gone to bed early.
5.30-6pm until year 3,
6.00-6.30 year 4,5.
6.30-7.00 y 5,6
7.30 y7
8.00 y8,
9.00 y9,
By 10.00 y10
By 11.00 y11
After GCSEs they can choose but still tend to go early

Secondary school kids going to bed at 7.30pm? Surely not??

My kids are 8 and 11 and go upstairs at 9pm. 8 year old would be asleep by 9.30, 11 year old asleep by 10ish.

Thanks for being surprised and not rude, I know this wouldn't work for most, my sister isn't home from work with her kids before mine were going to bed.
We always did occasional lates, but nothing regularly, they only did extra activities (swim/tramp/football/cricket) at weekends, my eldest are adults now (I've had big gaps between) and still like to go to bed early. On the flip side even as teenagers they liked to get up at 7am.

JennyWren87 · 17/05/2022 22:42

18 month old and 4 month old. Bedtime used to be around 8pm for the toddler but the baby has decided 7.15 is best for her so they both have their nighttime routine at that time now.

I think teens raiding the fridge in the late evening is completely normal as is staying up late - their circadian rhythm is different to younger children or adults. Luckily my 15yo is at college which doesn't start til 10/10.30 and only a 20 min walk away so he doesn't have to be up particularly early. Early school starts are horrible for teenagers.

Madmaxxy · 17/05/2022 22:45

10mo 7pm

I have no need to fabricate online, I am the far side of the spectrum, I've been ridiculed many times on mn but figure sharing may help someone. Parenting is mainly what works for the family.

Mahanii · 17/05/2022 22:46

Mine have to get up at 6.30 so they're in bed by 8.30 and they're 8 and 10.

Apollonia1 · 17/05/2022 22:47

I've two-year old twins.
They go to bed between 8 - 8:15pm and straight to sleep. (We do pyjamas, teeth, story downstairs). They sleep till about 7:45-8am.
I'd like to move their bedtime a bit earlier, to 7:45-8pm.
I think this is slightly later than normal for toddlers to go to bed, but I frequently have work meetings till 7pm, so it suits my schedule.

TokyoSushi · 17/05/2022 22:49

9 & 11 yr olds here, bed between 9:15 & 9:30 and 10 at the weekend. Been like this for a year or so and I expect the times won't move much for a little while yet.

Go to bed no issue, are woken at 7:15 to get out of bed at 7:30am

UndertheCedartree · 17/05/2022 22:51

Someone made a good point about wake up times.

So my 10yo goes to bed at 8.30pm and I have to wake her at 7.30am. I wish she would wake up but naturally she would sleep til about 9.

My 15 yo goes to sleep at 11 or 12. He gets up about 8.30am on college days and later when not in.

bassackwards · 17/05/2022 22:55

I know 7/7.30 is the norm for young children in the UK but my 4yo usually falls asleep between 8.30 and 9. She settled into that pattern about 2 hrs ago and never budged

TenoringBehind · 17/05/2022 22:55

when mine were that age bed would have been 7pm for the toddler, 8pm latest for the 7yo.

Mine are 14 and 16 yo. In the school holidays their bedtime is long after mine,

BobbinHood · 17/05/2022 22:57

Age 4.5, bed by 19:15. Usually asleep by 19:30, always by 20:00.

LifeInsideMyhead · 17/05/2022 22:58

I am envious of all the 7.30 starts. Our school starts at 8.15!

Mano2020 · 17/05/2022 22:58

22 month old 9pm but usually not asleep until 10pm

diamondpony80 · 17/05/2022 22:59

DD age 7, goes to bed around 7.30 - lights out by 8.30.

Pootle40 · 17/05/2022 23:00

Soon to be 8 year old - 830pm; 12 year old 930pm.
