To ask you to give me a new surname?

Marriages/divorces (my own and parents), deed poll and other circumstances mean that I am currently on my fourth surname.
Each surname has belonged to a different man, a father, a stepfather, a husband etc. Not having had a particularly good relationship with any of them, I have never felt that any of these names belonged to me.
I want to change my surname. I want a name that belongs to me.
Any suggestions?

Seriously? There's a zillion. Go for Smith or Jones.

Nooo not a common run of the mill one. The only reason I haven't changed from my ex-husbands surname is that it's so generic and common it doesn't intrinsically link me to him in peoples minds.

Devereaux after Blanche in the golden girls!

Deadringer · 16/05/2022 22:04

I love the name Wilde, I would go for that or Austen after my favourite author. Do you have a place or a person that's special to you op?

RowanAlong · 16/05/2022 22:07

Any nice names from female relatives that you could borrow/adapt?

I'd choose a famous celebrity surname, everyone will think it's cool and know how to spell it

I think Guinness and Cadbury are supposed to be the most elite names in GB. Or maybe Windsor.

I like Phoenix too and am in love with Joaquin Phoenix...his family chose Phoenix (they were Bottom!) and changed en masse to symbolise a new beginning after being in a cult.

I'd love something 'de-' like de-Montford, or deNiro, or a -ski (ska) name but that could be straying into cultural appropriation. Or just sheer embarrassment when asked about heritage and you have to either lie or just admit you wanted to sound cool.

I didn't change my surname on marriage because I didn't want to but it isn't the easiest to spell which can have a serious impact with things like email addresses (my work email includes my surname) so I would definitely go for something with unambiguous spelling. But otherwise, what a wonderful thing to do :)

FatPatsCat · 16/05/2022 22:18

Zorana - means new beginning

watcherintherye · 16/05/2022 22:19

Did/do you have a good relationship with your mother? If so, what about her maiden name?

KissedintheDark · 16/05/2022 22:24

Lavender is a lovely name.

Oooo, not sure I could cope with the responsibility. Have you read any of Cheryl Strayed's stuff? She invented her surname after a divorce, I think it's cool!

I used to live next door to a Mr and Mrs Sunshine, which I thought was great (although he was a miserable bugger)

I sold my house to a Mr and Mrs Snowflake

I had a teenage crush on a guy with the last name Blake. I imagined what our children would be called - and everything goes with it. Even the worst names sound good with Blake.

TheCanyon · 16/05/2022 22:39

I'm laughing at the suggestion of the place where you were born. I mean, c'mon. Dundee... Nope, not very appealing is it.

PennyFleck · 16/05/2022 22:42

Do you have a middle name? Change your surname to this - then you're entirely YOU!
