To ask you to give me a new surname?

Marriages/divorces (my own and parents), deed poll and other circumstances mean that I am currently on my fourth surname.
Each surname has belonged to a different man, a father, a stepfather, a husband etc. Not having had a particularly good relationship with any of them, I have never felt that any of these names belonged to me.
I want to change my surname. I want a name that belongs to me.
Any suggestions?

Dawn, because you are starting over

I'd love a nature name, I know some Nightingales which I love.

WinterCarlisle · 16/05/2022 21:31

Definitely make it something meaningful to you!

I know someone with the surname Rainbird, I love that. Also there was a teacher at my primary school called Miss Hunnybun. She got married and changed her name to Brown. WHY?? Hunnybun was amazing.

Ultimately I think you should choose something that is special to you and sounds great with your first name. I like alliteration - first names and surnames starting with the same letter but I know this isn’t for everyone.

Good luck!

Darling - loveliest surname ever

Yes! I worked with a woman whose surname was Darling.
Beautiful suggestion!
I think I’d become the nicest person in the world with a name like that!

I’d change mine to Rowan, I think. I like the tree. I’d definitely pick a name from nature.

If you were going to write a novel what would the heroine of your story be called? You are rewriting your own story.

Somuddled · 16/05/2022 21:46

Names I've come across and love are, Faraday, Winters, Valentine, Lovell, Culpepper and Hyssop

DogsDryWineAndCheese · 16/05/2022 21:47

My three most favourite beautiful surnames have already been mentioned -
Valentine
Wilde
Darling

On a slightly conflicting thought, another surname I love is Hartless. I know a lovely person with that surname and I’ve always found it very cool, if a little edgy.

I do really like the idea of ‘Freeman’ though.

I think it’s a perfect idea finding your own surname 🙂

NewbieDivergent · 16/05/2022 21:49

Or Cowmeadow. I knew a chap who changed his surname from Cowmeadow to Meadows. Still nice but not as nice!

Ooh I'd go for moriarty or Holmes. Difficult to decide which..

What about nightingale? I knew someone with that surname, was a lovely one.

Can you not pick something that’s meaningful to you? Your favourite place perhaps? The surname of a teacher, sportsperson, artist etc who has inspired you?

Or, do you have a middle name? Perhaps you could change that to be your surname?

Chantin · 16/05/2022 21:57
