AIBU to hope for a libel trial as entertaining as Vardy v Rooney and an outcome that rivals the Katy Hopkins debacle?

I'm not impressed about all the conspiracy theory attitudes.

He grew up in a deprived area, was a labour member, is now a Tory and is not hard up. He spends time, money and effort on his local foodbank.

She has significant mental health problems/ND I suspect we don't know the whole of. She's campaigned relentlessly, and with some success, about food poverty. She's volatile on social media. She made most her recipes freely available on the internet. They are simple, nutritious and efficient, taking into account limited equipment and being creative about shortcuts.

I'm not sure why we have to be tribal about this. They're both complicated people.

Theluggage15 · 15/05/2022 19:08

She was never bloody poor! She got her very well paid job through daddy, then stripped off from it for whatever reason, the husband of her child supported her, as a PP said her grandad and now father owns loads of properties in Southend and she’s always described her family as supportive. Any ‘poverty’ she lived in was in her head.

Please for the love of God tell me who Jack has helped. And please don’t repeat the things she has said (or is it “they” today, I can’t keep up).

Jack is a good writer.
Jack is the acceptable middle class face of poverty because she once visited a food bank. Oh the horror after her middle class upbringing , ballet lessons and grammar school etc.
Jack is also a professional victim who realises she’s fucked up this weekend by posting her private PayPal details so people could contribute to her “legal fees” for a case which doesn’t yet exist. One of her first donations came from someone’s Carers Allowance.

What was that she said about not taking money from people in poverty?

When people who support her gently suggested she make it a GoFund me thing so it was transparent and above board she was snippy and rude.

So we have no idea what was donated.
We have no idea if Jack will donate it to charity if not used.

Jack has been dining out on ONE visit to a food bank over a decade ago. Time she got a job like the rest of us and learned to budget.

And paying her taxes would also help as she is the first one shouting about tax evaders.

Used to love her, now cannot stand her.

She lives not far from me in a very naice area paying a minimum of £2500 a month in rent. That is not someone who knows poverty.

She is bringing in a minimum of £2k a month from Patreon and ignores contributors on Twitter when they nicely ask where the promised postcards etc are.

She said recently she couldn’t afford broadband. Except two days ago she tweeted a screenshot from her phone showing connection to…er….broadband.

Some of you need to wake the fuck up and smell the coffee. Jack has done very nicely for a pt least a decade out of this.

Oh and she cannot cook as her segment on This Morning proved …go take a look at the “lasagne” she made. It would be laughable except for the fact they paid her for that appearance.

Out of here as I cannot stand the fawning and sycophantic adoration of this grifter,

Dancingmoon · 15/05/2022 19:13

I've always thought Jack Monroe catered to middle-class people with her recipes than the working-class (my background).

If it weren't for austerity, she wouldn't be famous, would she?

Minimalme · 15/05/2022 19:14

It's not about her personal wealth. She is very well informed and a brilliant advocate for those in society who experience food poverty.

She is not "making money off the backs of poor people" as Anderson claimed.

He is vile and believes people don't need food back and that food poverty is because some people can't cook.

Why not discuss his wealth if it is relevant to the argument?

jaffacakesareepic · 15/05/2022 19:15

AllotmentTime · 15/05/2022 17:09

Why can she say it and he can’t…

Because she is drawing on personal experience of poverty to say “it’s shit, here are strategies that may help you”

Whereas he is looking down from a place of spectacular privilege to say “you’re doing it wrong and your poverty is your own fault”.

How people can’t see the difference between those two positions is astonishing to me.

Precisely this

If anyone else is geuinely confused by the difference Jack has written a blog post on the subject that is thoughtful, insighful ànd articulate

If you still cant see the difference aftercreading that you probably think rees mogg is a genius

And yes I accept she has MH issues which is why someone/ANYONE should have taken her bloody phone off her two days ago and calmed her down.

I seriously suspect the Narc rage would have been off the scale had that happened though, perhaps why she lives alone.

No she isn’t alone parent and hasn’t been for a long time, not stable enough to provide care for her son.

Please, supporters of JM, what has she done for those in poverty?

Her meals are inefficient and wasteful, don’t taste good and rely on odd combinations that show a real lack of understanding for the massive proportion of the world who live on cheap ingredients to make good tasting, healthy and filling meals.

I recognise her neurodiversity and the issues that come with it, but I’ve also come to recognise that she’s much closer to Boris Johnson (amenable, friendly persona at massive odds with his actions and self) than she is with actual activists and campaigners like Dawn Foster (RIP) and even Marcus Rashford. Being “volatile” on SM isn’t a good thing - volume doesn’t equal usefulness, and there are so many receipts to show her hypocrisy and lies.

It’s a real shame - I’d love someone like her as a role model, but the scales have fallen from my eyes and it’s hard to read sources other than herself and think she isn’t just a v effective Insta-grifter.

@WilmaFlintstone1 you’re kidding. That’s genuinely upsetting.

He didn't say 30p per meal, he said 30p per day and you have to go on the course to obtain a food parcel. No matter which way you swing it, making people jump through patronising hoops in order to obtain food is abhorrent. He also believes food bank use is overstated and most users don't actually need a food bank. He also claimed people say they're disabled to get benefits which is categorically untrue, disability benefits have one of the lowest levels of fraud simply because of the volume of evidence required to make a claim, and undermines the difficulties disabled people have.

He is also the same MP who said we should have forced work camps with people in tents in fields, knock them out of bed at 6am to pick fruit/vegetables, back to the tent at 6pm for a cold shower and lights out, then make them do it again the next day.

He also made racist remarks about the Traveller community, has been investigated for antisemitism, and boycotted the England games in the Euros because they're "supporting an ideology that undermines our very way of life" (that ideology was Black Lives Matter).

I'm not saying he's a cunt but he sure does make a compelling case for it.

He's probably just trying to fit in, in the Tory party.

Fridafever · 15/05/2022 19:25

Why are people saying she hasn’t paid taxes? I’d watch it that really is defamatory (if untrue).

You can see on Companies House accounts haven’t been filed for a long time.

I’d never heard of Jack Monroe before this thread.

Apparently she forgot to file her tax returns for a couple of years, and is now dealing with that.

So yes, for a period of time, she did not pay her taxes. It is, however, almost certainly not tax evasion (where somebody deliberately attempts to not pay taxes that are owing). Tax evasion tends to be a tad mor sophisticated than ‘hey, how about I just don’t file my tax returns for a couple of years’.

Hollyhead · 15/05/2022 19:31

I don’t like him or stand for much of what he does but on this I’m right. And although she’s done lots of good I don’t completely trust her. I find her very disingenuous at times. For instance she did a slot on radio 4 once about eating vegan and whether it was more expensive. The angle of the story was about veganism for climate change rather than animal rights, but she went all ‘boohoo veganism is stacked against the poor because agave nectar is more expensive than honey. If she was really trying to empower poor people (given that being vegan can be very cost effective), she could have made the point that although not vegan, if you’re vegan for reducing your climate footprint actually choosing honey over agave nectar is unlikely to make a difference. But instead she went straight into victim mode.

ermagerdabear · 15/05/2022 19:33

Doesn't matter about personalities or what you think. She has done shit-tonnes to support people in poverty - including sending her recipe books to food banks and saying that they can photocopy the hell out of them

She's done fuck all for people in poverty except make money off the back of them. She sent her recipe books to foodbanks after she crowdfunded on Twitter to pay for them - win, win for her. Gets the royalties and gets to look altruistic. She didn't just donate them, they were paid for by the masses.

About an hour after the Reclaim video was posted, she asked for people to send donations to her personal PayPal account to fund legal action in a now deleted Tweet, which was up for most of the evening and had nearly 2000 likes before it was zapped. No transparency and no one will know what happens to their money if she decides not to go ahead (which she will, because she doesn't have a leg to stand on). There were numerous people saying they don't have much money including someone on carers allowance, but they've sent her money anyway.

Everything they said about her in that video was true.

Not sure when “grifter” became shorthand for “people I personally don’t like”, but whatever else you say about Monroe I’m not sure what she’s meant to have lied about. There is a cost of living crisis, food is a big part of that, and she’s advocated for the situation to improve.

jessycake · 15/05/2022 19:34

I think she has been good for raising the profile of hunger in this country , but I'm on a couple of facebook budget sites and lots of people actually living on a very low income have her skills .

I think that is how she has made her money though isn’t it. Also her twitter feed, etc makes it seem like she is still on the breadline but she’s not is she? It’s seems to me he is right but I don’t know enough about her to say for sure.

MaryAndHerNet · 15/05/2022 19:37

Everything else aside, I'll put it this way... after the TV appearances, newspaper interviews, media appearances, Patreon, blogs, several No1 selling books...

If Jack is, after all this time, still poor, it's her own fault for being shit with money and she shouldn't be giving anyone advice on how to spend theirs.

Borisblondboufant · 15/05/2022 19:38

I hope it goes to court and her financials are laid bare. She’s not poor.
the whole people sending her money to her PayPal is really really bad.
