AIBU to hope for a libel trial as entertaining as Vardy v Rooney and an outcome that rivals the Katy Hopkins debacle?

Whether or not you agree with Lee Anderson's politics, he's far better placed to comment on poverty and solutions than Jack Monroe

Is he though ? He is apparently an ex coal miner , so had a good job with decent benefits, what did he do after he left or was his pit closed down ? Did he go straight into politics at a national level with decent pay and excellent benefits ?

Work for Citizens Advice Bureau by all accounts.

Clymene · 15/05/2022 21:07

No, I don't accept that it's a 'simple, accidental late filing' @Fluval.

For those who don't know how company accounts work, you file and pay taxes for the year about 9 months after the year has actually ended.

So we're talking about taxes Jack owed for the year ending 31 March 2020. Which she was supposed to have paid in June 2021. And still hasn't.

I really don't know how you can defend this.

The misogyny and bitter envy on this thread is astonishing. Woman earns money. STONE HER. New Tory of dubious provenance bags himself seat in Parliament, a hefty salary with recent payrise, a comfortable expense account and subsidised food and alcohol suitable to his wants. PRAISE HIM. He's a success with his snout in the public trough. Get over yourselves women, shame on you.

Comprehension not your strong point?

Posters arguing that JM is no saint but pretty much a self-serving publicity mad construct of her own making aren't saying he's a paragon of rectitude.

Though in a race to the bottom, it'd be a close run thing between these two.

I think people need to remember that the vast majority of MPs expenses are actually wages for their staff.

You need to ignore the bullshit headlines touted by people with an agenda and look into the facts.

Eg put of 190k expenses. 160k of which go to office and staff wages. Unless you're going to sack all of the support staff involved in politics, that'd be hundreds of people unemployed.

I thought the government had announced that unemployment was too low so they were going to sack 90,000 civil servants?

Oh give over.

according to her she isn’t making any money. She is still poor. So it couldn’t be that.

No one is obliged to support someone lying because they happen to be female.

and oddly you can believe she is a lair and not like him or what he says either.

But given he is the only one who actually has been poor out of the 2 of them, the argument of ‘she can say certain things and he can’t because it’s her lived experience and he is just a rich Tory that has no clue’ makes no sense.

mmmmmmghturep · 15/05/2022 21:11

@PAFMO Yes it was definately all about the health. Make people (including key workers live like this..........twitter.com/KwajoHousing/status/1524317629535727617?s=20&t=uMkydVax7ZLWLYaC5qROZA and then tell them its all about the health. A risk of cholera seems to be accepted though.

"I also haven't seen her do loads with brands"

Sainsbury's?

She also used to write for the Guardian. They don't pay peanuts.

User56785 · 15/05/2022 21:12

You've got some nerve describing Jack Monroe as a woman. Hope you have a lawyer.

dragonatetheparsnips · 15/05/2022 21:14

Wouldnt it be great if all this anger at her was channeled into something which made a difference. Like dealing with the poverty which means that our local food bank is almost empty because of the demand. Let’s get angry that people can’t afford to eat while we subsidise MPs dinners.

But as I said before, it’s much easier to be angry with her. Then you can avoid thinking about the inequality that you - and I - are all benefitting from.

She may well be the worst person in the world for all I know, but if you’re angry with her more than you are angry about the appalling poverty in this country then you are not much better.

Stop pretending she’s the problem

It is important in this race to almost entirely forget about the poor people, except for when they are useful to provide some publicity or a soundbite about them.

You can be both.

and who said she was the problem with the country and it’s poverty problem?

To be honest, I was living in poverty at the same time as Jack became famous - we were homeless after losing our house in the recession, mum didn't pay bills and bailiffs used to come around, and we didn't have food in the place, and went to food banks.

So with all due respect, I wouldn't say I am being misogynistic when I am pointing out that she's a middle-class woman making money out of people's misfortune. It's how the world work, and it marginalises the people who are actually going through the lived experiences. I don't necessarily agree with Anderson on politics either.

what is actually happening is that a woman who claims to be poor and has made a career out of such claims, threatens to sue someone who says she has made a load of money off the backs of some of the poorest people in society. There seems to be a lot of evidence that what he said is true as pp have posted.

it is not jealousy or misogyny to object to some of the awful behavior alleged above: eg taking money to a personal PayPal for a non existent legal case from desperately poor individuals. I’m not jealous of that at all and I can’t think why anyone would be.

Rantypanties · 15/05/2022 21:22

Jack Monroe is a nasty piece of work. What has her ‘campaigning’ actually changed over 10 years?

Banging on about being one of the forgotten self employed during lockdown and yet her company (that hasn’t filed accounts and most likely not paid tax) claimed furlough whilst she had her Daily Kitchen Live job, her Hellman’s colab (five figure sum received in her words) as well as Linda McCartney and Del Monte. Pretty sure at that time, whilst living with the head of C4 news, she couldn’t afford a stick of butter so are we to believe that these companies have refused to pay her like they do with all the other chefs? And that she was in a financially abusive relationship?

she’s full of catchy soundbites but follow her for a little while and suddenly things start making less sense. And I’m sorry but who the hell uses make up to make her look like she has a black eye whilst squinting at the camera!?!?! 😂

I really hope she gets taken down a peg or two, and it will stop her from asking for money from people less well off than her.

I really don't know how you can defend this.

If you don’t file your returns on time, it will invariably be noted by HMRC, and you will be subject to a late filing penalty. Nobody is going to dodge a tax obligation by making a late filing, particularly as it will end up costing you more.

Obviously in an ideal world, everybody would remember to pay their taxes on time, but accidental late filings are hardly uncommon.

And it’s a world apart from the crime of tax evasion (or any other of the tabloidy synonyms you wish to use for that).

donquixotedelamancha · 15/05/2022 21:27

You've got some nerve describing Jack Monroe as a woman. Hope you have a lawyer.

She is a woman and 'identifies' as one too. She dropped the non binary thing many years ago after it stopped generating publicity.

donquixotedelamancha · 15/05/2022 21:34

Fwiw I’d love it to get to court.

It won't. You can't sue someone for having an opinion. She has made a fortune and she does claim to speak for the poor.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/05/2022 21:37

CapMarvel · 15/05/2022 18:14

Fairly obviously because the tories are the reason why so many people are - in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, let's not forget - in food poverty.

People dislike Jack Monroe for the same reason people dislike Jamie Oliver, for some reason you shouldn't try to champion causes if you have dared to be successful. Oh no, Jamie is trying to help kids, how dare he grumble grumble.

Doesn't she absolutely despise Jamie Oliver?

HemanOrSheRa · 15/05/2022 21:39

Well. I'm surprised this thread is still here!

Clymene · 15/05/2022 21:55

I don't think you can consider filing a whole year late 'accidental'. She has responded to the multiple letters from Companies House or she would have been struck off.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 15/05/2022 21:57

So he left college at 19 after doing a course in shipping management ? and then followed his Father down the Pit , 2 years after the miners strike started in 1984, worked there for 10 years and left at 29 in 1996 ?
I struggle with the fact that nobody can come up with the name of the mine he worked at , I know the name of the mine my Grandfather worked at and he has been dead for nearly 40 years.
If he worked down the Pit for 10 years, the name of said mine should be common knowledge surely ? If it isn't, why ? I know he switched sides politically and the Conservatives were, how shall I put it , not previously well thought of in Ex Mining communities for fairly obvious reasons, but if you worked a pit , surely it would be a big part of your story ?

donquixotedelamancha · 15/05/2022 22:02

Well. I'm surprised this thread is still here!

This is only the second Jack Monroe thread I've seen survive over many years, though it's early days.

The key is not to directly call specific statements pies, even if you are being factual, and to avoid being too pejorative about her.

Remember the rules are different when addressing another MNer, so things we can say about The Youtuber Owen Jones would be abuse about her.

Tilltheend99 · 15/05/2022 22:05

Smileyaxolotl1 · 15/05/2022 16:59

Can anyone explain why it is fine and innovative for Monroe to suggest people buy from value ranges and batch cook but disgusting and insensitive when Tories say it.

Yeah: Because Jack Monroe is a semi-normal person who has experienced living in poverty and is dedicated to ending food poverty so that there is no need for food banks. Most Tories come from wealthy families who have historically made their money through exploiting working people and are cuing up to be photographed celebrating the opening of new food banks with a slap up buffet etc My local MP even charged £1 in expenses to the taxpayer for parking on a visit to a food bank.

Look into the history of the French Revolution and the phrase “let them eat cake.” There is only so much people in power and privilege can party (coughs) and patronise people with nothing before the majority of ordinary people fancy a change at the top.

do you think she has money or not though? You seem conflicted here. she does seem to have patreon funds and money from her books, writing and tv. And her father by all accounts is very wealthy. Yet I understand she still claims to be poor.

why do you think Lee Anderson is “of dubious provenance”? Because he was a coal miner? Because he “bagged himself” a seat in parliament?

I don’t think there is anything shameful about being elected to parliament as a job in itself or being a coal miner. I certainly don’t agree with his politics but he was democratically elected and I don’t see there’s anything wrong with that.

SofiaSoFar · 15/05/2022 22:16

When Covid lockdown first started and Jamie Oliver had a show on C4 (who he was already contracted to in a long term deal to make multiple shows) about cooking with easily available ingredients, JM was awful towards him.

How can some random, barely known person, think that just because they've self-promoted themselves as an 'expert' in something it means an extremely famous, highly experienced TV presenter chef, already contracted by the TV channel, should be cast aside?

Narcissism at its finest. Yuk.
