How much financial help did you give dc at uni?

My oldest is moving away for uni and I have another two who are younger, 13 and 15.
It obviously depends on what someone can afford but did you fund quite a bit of your child’s time at uni or did you expect them to work as much as needed to subsidise student loan.
Trying to decide what would be reasonable.

I think most parents aim to at least top up student loan to the max level (unless they get max anyway) otherwise they won't even be able to make rent, never mind buy food etc.

For undergrad, mine worked through uni and used savings if they wanted a holiday etc.

For Masters, they got loan for fees and I paid their living costs, which wiped out my savings.

Mine are too young, but almost 10 years ago now I was given half my rent (I lived in my own rented flat) and £1500 a month. Course fees were paid for me. I did contracting-type work though, it meant I could not take any work if I had a big assignment to work on.

I had friends who were given more, or less, or nothing at all, I don't think there's any set right or wrong amount of help to give, it's totally dependant on individual situations.

We give DD £500 a month, which covers her rent this year, but won't next year. She gets the minimum student loan of £4,300. Her rent alone is £6000 pa We have DD3 going in two years and DD 1 will still have 3 years left, so how we will manage £1000 a month, I have no idea, especially as life is getting so expensive. We never have holidays, either. It's a killer. DD1 works in the summer but her holidays are getting shorter every year as she does medicine.

We paid accommodation and food (basic food allowance). We expected them to work to pay for their socialising, phone, beer etc. 2 dc and each took different approaches. dc1 worked all summer / christmas etc, banked the money and used it throughout the year so they didn't have to work during term time. They also had very moderate lifestyle requirements. dc2 had anything upto 3 jobs throughout the term time. They had a lavish party and social life and needed 3 jobs to fund it - but still managed to get a good degree.

Didn't they use the loan for socialising, phone, beer etc?

We pay most of the rent - the rest is topped up by DSA as they need an ensuite for medical reasons. We give £500 a month on top and pay for phone and gym. DC then earn £35 an hour for teaching one evening a week and sometimes pick up some babysitting on top. Its not quite a cushy as it sounds as they are a musician and can end up shelling out half a months allowance on a new set of strings.
