Out of control dogs

missmelons88 · 14/05/2022 21:09

The increasing amount of unruly dogs is caused by our humanisation and resulting lack of control of our pet dogs. I see people being dragged to the park all the time, they let the dog go and meet it at the other side.

They don't think their dog chased anything because they didn't see it, meanwhile it's running after ducks. The dog has good recall because it eventually came back.. etc etc.

Unruly = anything from no recall to an dog that bites their handler.

Discuss.

I've never seen any of the things you are talking about in many many years of dog walking. Did you make it up ? Discuss

AngelinaFangelina · 14/05/2022 21:14

YABU for "discuss" 😉
There was a HUGE thread on this the other day OP that you might find interesting to read through, it shouldn't be too many pages back.
I don't see anything like this around here but I'm in a very rural village with stacks of walking areas and well behaved farm dogs! Some people are shit owners, some aren't. Thus is life.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 14/05/2022 21:18

YABU for posting yet another goady dog thread.

missmelons88 · 14/05/2022 21:19

'Discuss' probably wasn't needed and not MN etiquette, apologies. I could have worded that better 😬

Definitely not made up, it happens a lot!

I will try and find the thread, thank you!

Yet another thread complaining about dogs. Yawn.

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/05/2022 21:19

🤔

easyday · 14/05/2022 21:23

Nope never seen anyone do this. Vast majority are responsible owners.

Here you go. It's along the same lines.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 14/05/2022 21:26

Not in my experience.

We took our dog to a national park today, it's hugely busy with people and dogs alike. Our dog is well trained off lead and will ignore most or give a polite sniff exchange at most and the 50/60/70 dogs we must have seen today were the same. There was one yappy, snappy little mutt at the café who thought he was a lion but he was safely on a lead and between his owner's legs whilst they ate.

Blossomtoes · 14/05/2022 21:27

Kids run after ducks where I live. I’ve never seen one caught by a child or a dog. YABU.

bellamountain · 14/05/2022 21:30

The one thing I can't stand are people who keep their dogs on the lead all the time. How would you like every bit of your freedom to be tied to a lead. However, if you can't control your dog properly, you need to learn to train it and to find remote open spaces. Too many people in flats and busy towns with dogs who need to burn their energy properly and the local park on a lead is not adequate exercise. No wonder we have so many crazy pent up dogs amongst us.

MadisonAvenue · 14/05/2022 21:30

We took our dog out for a quiet walk this morning, he’s recently had eye surgery so needs to keep calm. We came across a large group of around 20 adults walking dogs off their leads. As soon as we saw them we put our dog on his lead so that he wasn’t tempted to run around, plus he’s a little nervous after being attacked by out of control dogs a number of times over the years.

Not one of them put their dogs on leads (or said thank you as we stood to one side to let them all, slowly, pass). A few of the dogs approached ours and were running around him, barking. The owners tried calling them off but the dogs took absolutely no notice at all and no extra effort was made. Our requests to them to get their dogs were met with “we’re trying!” The dogs eventually got fed up and ran after the group.

If I see a dog approaching and it’s on it’s lead then I put my dog on his, he has decent recall but he can easily be distracted if he takes a shine to another dog and wants to play. If a dog’s on it’s lead then it’s for a reason. It may be for medical reasons, be nervous, not be friendly.

Out of control dogs have become more of a problem since the first lockdown, around here at least. You’ve also got the dog owners who are paying attention to their phones and are totally unaware of what their off lead dog is doing.

bellamountain · 14/05/2022 21:34

@MadisonAvenue a dog is far more likely to attack yours if your dog is on a lead. A dog needs an escape route. Whenever my dog has been attacked, it's always when he is on the lead. The dog will be easy prey and not able to defend itself / run away. We use the lead until we get to the woods and then he's free.

bellamountain · 14/05/2022 21:34

@MadisonAvenue hope your dog is feeling better after eye surgery! Sorry forgot to add yours was a different situation.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 14/05/2022 21:44

A loose dog approaching a leashed dog is far more likely to be "attacked" by a fear aggressive dog than two leashed dogs who don't get close enough to interact in the first place.

Thank you, he’s doing well. He had bilateral cataract surgery after losing his sight earlier this year.

He’s lucky that we live just a one minute walk away from miles of common and woodland and I’ve even walked him off lead there while he was blind by talking to him constantly, walking the same path every day and watching him like a hawk. His sense of smell became his superpower.

Minimalme · 14/05/2022 22:01

We do just fine thanks. Dogs walked off lead, poo picked up, possibly a short interaction with another off lead dog who's up for it, leads back on, we all go home.

Rarely, if ever, have they eaten a toddler.

Flaxmeadow · 15/05/2022 23:02

Another child has died.

Bunty55 · 15/05/2022 23:04

It's the humans you have to watch out for. Far worse than dogs

What a sickening comment after whats happened, again.

Questiontellme · 15/05/2022 23:26

Nice @Minimalme I suppose that's you minimising the death of the three year old toddler today is it? Disgusting thing to joke about

XenoBitch · 15/05/2022 23:45

I have no fucking idea what has happened with a child or dog in the press today. Maybe Bunty55 is the same.

They are also right. Humans are worse.. and they know what they are doing.

Minimalme · 15/05/2022 23:50

Of course not @Questiontellme I made that post yesterday and haven't watched/heard any news today.

Please feel free to carry on being goady though and pretending you believe that someone would make a joke about the death of a child. Shame on you.

Flaxmeadow · 16/05/2022 00:21

It's a waste of time Questiontellme. They don't care. All they care about is dogs

Hollygolightly86 · 16/05/2022 00:26

I’m sick of all these posts. We get it you don’t like dogs. Stay away from them then & find something else to moan about like cats shitting in your garden or squirrels eating your bird seed. So boring
