To think we have a real chance this year with Eurovision?

I love the Sam Ryder song and the official video. I think that, if it wasn't for politics, he would have a good chance of being in the top five. Whatever the outcome, I think the video for the song should be used for the 2022 John Lewis Christmas advert 🙂. Whatever the outcome, well done Sam > you're brilliant.

LampLighter414 · 14/05/2022 13:18

Not edgy enough sorry

@SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit I may well be disappointed - but I'm still going to enjoy the evening, the costumes and the music and make the most of the madness!

Sounds good @HappySonHappyMum 👍

I do hope it's a good show tonight.🕺Glitterball

I think Ukraine will win. Great song with a great meaning and people will feel behind them.

"I'll always find my way home, even if all roads are destroyed" - breaks your heart...

I dont think we will win but I think it'll be our best attempt in a very long time! Maybe top 3 🤞

Ferngreen · 14/05/2022 13:29

I felt tearful listening to the news - Ukrainian is going to watch it from a bunker, apparently the Ukrainian orchestra does the backing. Will be V emotional I think.

Ukraine won’t win because they can’t host next years show safely . I’m not voting for the uk either, we’re always crap.

Sweden has already offered to host next year if Ukraine win.

The only chance we have this year is coming second last to Russia.

Russia is banned this year.

BlueBeeSpots · 14/05/2022 13:34

I don’t think we’ll win and roll my eyes every time Radio 2 say we will. Sam seems so likeable and he’s a good singer: hopefully this means we’ll finish mid table at least (which is a win compared to last year!)

I think Ukraine deserve to win. I had a tear in my eye watching their semi final performance, not because it was great but because Russia is trying to destroy their identity as a country.

Not sure why the results of the semi-finals keep being called a surprise - all my favourites got through.

Fairislefandango · 14/05/2022 13:35

YABU. The song is... ok. I don't really like his voice. Ukraine will probably win (I haven't heard their entry).

PiggyPlumPie · 14/05/2022 13:37

Good chance of winning as I'm not watching tonight. Last time I didn't watch was 97 with Katrina and the Waves! Grin

ChilledScandi · 14/05/2022 13:38

larkstar · 14/05/2022 11:37

No. No chance of winning. Europe on the whole, dislikes the UK. Everyone is tipping Ukraine - I don't think it's that certain. I think Moldova have a chance...

I’m not in the UK, and I don’t know anyone that dislikes the UK. I don’t know why you keep saying that..it’s only a ’thing’ in the UK, nowhere else. Weird.

ChilledScandi · 14/05/2022 13:39

I wonder what the odds are that banned Russia will try cyberattacking Eurovision tonight..

Pheonixgirl · 14/05/2022 13:50

I personally think that the Sam Ryder song is great but I'm not even going to speculate about who's most likely to win, it's all far too political to ever be purely about talent, just countries giving good/crap marks to whoever they have the best political affiliations with, it doesn't really matter how 'good' a song or an artist is at all.

OK, so if it's all about politics and the song and the performer don't matter:

Why does everyone hate Spain?

Why did everyone hate Portugal and then suddenly love them
and then hate them again?

InFiveMins · 14/05/2022 14:16

I think we'll come top 5 for sure. Maybe even top 3.

InFiveMins · 14/05/2022 14:17

Ukraine will likely win, but it isn't particularly strong this year in terms of contestants. The UK have a very good entrant this year so have a great chance of doing well. That's my opinion anyway Grin

MadameMinimes · 14/05/2022 17:53

I think Ukraine are highly likely to win this year. If there’s an upset, then I think the U.K. entry is probably the one most likely to beat it. He’s been promoting the song really heavily in Europ, he’s likeable and the song gets catchier the more you listen to it.

It will be interesting to see how far the political situation affects voting.

I’m a real fan of Eurovision and enjoy it completely un-ironically. Most of the stuff about the U.K. doing badly because we’re hated doesn’t stand up to any scrutiny. Only Ireland and Sweden have won more times than us. Our last win was a while ago, but more recent than the most recent win by Ireland, France, Belgium, Spain or Switzerland. I am curious as to whether people in those countries feel that they are hated because they haven’t won recently. Is it just something people in all countries who haven’t had much recent success say, or is it a peculiarly British attitude? We’re also bizarrely convinced that we always get nul points, when it has only happened twice in almost 70 years.

LisaSimpson77 · 14/05/2022 21:10

The thing is though, if Ukraine win won't they have to host next year?

That could be tricky 😞

LisaSimpson77 · 14/05/2022 21:12

Sigh, I really should read the thread properly, this has already been covered 🤦‍♀️

Brainfogmcfogface · 14/05/2022 21:16

Best we can hope for is in the bottom 3, he should place in the top 3 but he could have the best song ever written and the Uk would still come last.

MadameMinimes · 14/05/2022 21:35

There’s no way we are finishing in the bottom 3 this year. He’ll be top half of the table for sure and likely somewhere in the top 3-5. You only had to listen to the reaction of the crowd to his entrance earlier to realise he’s popular.

knittingaddict · 14/05/2022 22:25

We are thinking of buying the cd this year for the first time ever. There have been some really good songs. Better than an average year.

Can we finally put to bed the notion that the UK has done badly in the last couple of decades because those meany, unfair continental sorts don’t like us?

Maybe, just maybe, we’ve not been doing well because our songs weren’t among the best.
