Who's going to make this at home? A fiddly trifle full of home made this and thats, it looks very pretty and also like a time consuming faff, destined to be poked around on plates as people fish out bits they like or don't like. Poor winner.8

No idea what you are talking about, sorry!

ValentinaLuna · 13/05/2022 08:23

Fiddly and time consuming!!! Looks lovely if you had the time to create it!

toastfiend · 13/05/2022 08:24

I think it sounds nice and I'll probably give it a go because we like all the constituent parts.

You can buy almost all the ingredients and just assemble it at home if you don't want to spend too much time making all the components from scratch. I think the winner said that was exactly why she picked it, because the level of commitment in making it can be changed according to the skill/time of the person doing it. Which would you have preferred to see as the winner?

PeasInOurTime · 13/05/2022 08:25

Trifle (and tiramisu) is one of the few puddings I dislike - that gritty wet sponge is just bleurgh. So I won’t be making it - which is a shame because the flavour sounds delicious!

BitOutOfPractice · 13/05/2022 08:26

I think amaretto is a real marmite flavour isn’t it? Why choose something that lord of people hate?

BitOutOfPractice · 13/05/2022 08:26

Lots of people

Sylfia · 13/05/2022 08:28

Yes, just buy lemon swissroll, orange jelly, tin of mandarins, amaretti biscuits, custard, lemon curd, cream and you can assemble it. Skip the "jewelled bark" on top - that makes it look more complicated - top with any white chocolate. I like it ...

I suppose so but you could just swap for madeira sponge or something.

😁that's the level of attention I expected this 'competition to create a dish to rival the Victoria Sponge and Coronation Chicken' to have attracted. BBC gave it an hour of prime time last night. People made cakes, the trifle- please look it up if you want details -was the 🏆. The idea seems to be that we'll all be knocking one up one of these complex efforts at home for our jubilee street parties. I say thank heavens for Netflix.

The idea is that you can handmake as much or as little as you like. The only thing you actually need to make from scratch is the mandarin coulis, which is hardly difficult.

However it's still a trifle, and I hate them, so I'm disappointed that it won.

BigWoollyJumpers · 13/05/2022 08:32

I thought it was a really good winner actually. Easy to adapt with ready made ingredients, and no cooking involved.

icelolly12 · 13/05/2022 08:33

Not a trifle fan or a fan of tinned fruit so no.

Phos · 13/05/2022 08:33

I liked the programme and I usually like trifle but the flavours sound awful.

PowerfulWombSpaceRespector · 13/05/2022 08:35

Trifle = soggy cake
Tinned mandarins = boak

It's a no from me.

KnitPurlKnitPurl · 13/05/2022 08:35

Agree that if you are doing the whole thing from scratch it's super time consuming and fiddly. But if I was doing it I would buy a lemon swiss roll, buy some jelly, buy custard, buy lemon curd, buy amaretti biscuits and then just bung it all together. Might make the mandarin coulis as it's just tinned mandarins and sugar. probably wouldn't bother with the chocolate bark as it's just there for a fancy finish.

Wakemeuuuup · 13/05/2022 08:35

Can't stand amaretto so it's a no from me

FuzzyPuffling · 13/05/2022 08:36

I'm hoping Tesco make a version.

newnamethanks · 13/05/2022 08:36

I thought it was a poor selection overall. I wouldn't have chosen any of them although the passion fruit flan looked passable.

AmbushedByCake · 13/05/2022 08:38

Jelly has a horrifying texture, custard is only nice hot, tinned mandarins are horrible, trifle is an abomination.

BlancmanegeBunny · 13/05/2022 08:38

I thought the whole point of this was to create something that can be easily made by everyone! What a joke!!!!

I was really disappointed in the winner, it is a beautiful pudding and the creator worked very hard on it..... but it is way too time consuming and technical to be made by the majority of people.
I'm a good cook, my brother is a chef and my mum is a WI prize winning baker, we all watched the result and felt the same way! They should have gone for simple dish that everyone could have tried, who is going to attempt a swiss roll, etc etc

LadyEloise1 · 13/05/2022 08:44

I haven't seen the tv programme but read a write up in the DM.
I thought the Rose Falooda cake looked fabulous.
I don't like Swiss roll, candied peel or amaretti biscuits so the Jubilee trifle wouldn't be a winner for me.
The Bundt cake looked good too.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/05/2022 08:52

I didn't see the programme, but read about it on the BBC website.

It looks like mostly assembly of ready made ingredients, so you could certainly make a version of it at home without much effort. Or I'm sure there will be ready made ones for sale.

Although I predict a run on lemon curd and amaretti biscuits. People might struggle to find those once word gets out.

No-one has to make swiss roll, just buy one. Likewise custard, lemon curd and amaretti biscuits, it says in the write up that each element is simple and shop bought ingredients can be used.

You don't even need to bother making the coulis, just put in tinned mandarins as they are. It's just a slightly elaborate version of the trifle that people make at Christmas.

Synchrony · 13/05/2022 08:56

I think it sounds delicious! I'm planning to give it a go.

Itwasntmeright · 13/05/2022 08:57

I bloody love trifle. I bet M&S will do one, which I will be very tempted to buy.
