Who's going to make this at home? A fiddly trifle full of home made this and thats, it looks very pretty and also like a time consuming faff, destined to be poked around on plates as people fish out bits they like or don't like. Poor winner.8

@KnitPurlKnitPurl

she did buy the amaretti biscuits. Apparently that was a step too far

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 15/05/2022 14:45

I hate trifle so it's a no from me.
I also dislike coronation chicken and not so bothered about Victoria sponge, think it's a bit boring.
Royals have awful taste imo.

Billandben444 · 15/05/2022 15:01

I love trifle and own the identical bowl (an Argos special). I'll make it but will buy the Swiss roll and make the rest - not sure about the bark, might make it out of dark choc to balance the citrus.

Giraffesandbottoms · 15/05/2022 15:15

I think it would probably be as tasty and easier to just eat some lemon curd topped with whipped cream with a spoon. Mmmmmm

KnitPurlKnitPurl · 15/05/2022 14:08

But again she has chosen to make the entire thing, from scratch, and not buy lemon curd or custard and amaretti biscuits.

"Melvin insists that it’s fine to cheat. Buy a jar of lemon curd, a box of Italian biscuits and a tub of ready-made custard, she urges nervous cooks. To do this, however, would render the whole exercise pointless, wouldn’t it? You might as well buy a Colin the Caterpillar cake from M&S and have done with it."

🙄 Hardly. But then again she's a Guardian journalist, a newspaper which isn't best known for its overwhelming support of the monarchy.

What a nasty mean-spirited article that was.

newnamethanks · 16/05/2022 17:30

O come on, Rachel Cooke writes about food. That's a bit like surmising Delia Smith is a coke sniffing, fur coat wearing Mars bar eater because she made the cake on the cover photo of one of the Rolling Stones' LPs. Nothing could be further from the truth and if a professional foodie found the trifle a bit much to construct, well the Monarchy's survived worse and will doubtless continue to do so.

My comment was about the tone of the article. Referring to the amateur who won the competition by her surname struck me as unnecessarily sniffy. She also said the recipe was badly written. Well, she's attempted to follow it, and I haven't, but I have skimmed through it and it seemed perfectly clear to me, and there was nothing surprising in the ingredients or method of any of the components. She claimed that there was an ingredient that was suddenly needed and came as a surprise, so she didn't have it and had to use cornflour instead. Maybe the recipe has been edited since she was given it, but that ingredient is there now, because I noticed it the first time I looked through the recipe and thought I would need to buy it specially (it's arrowroot). So yes, I stand by what I said. Mean-spirited.

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 16/05/2022 17:59

Hoping good old mark's and Spencer do this ready made. Can't be doing with all the faff

newnamethanks · 16/05/2022 18:14

Oh, fair enough then, you've given it far more concentrated attention than I, so my apologies.

I love trifle and will give it a go. I thought it was the most accessible out of them all.

Angrymum22 · 16/05/2022 22:38

WeAreTheHeroes · 15/05/2022 13:47

Since when have tinned strawberries been "world class"? Well you're not short of confidence, maybe you should have entered the competition?

I tried it with fresh strawberries but everyone complained. I don’t use any other tinned fruit but tinned strawberries just seem to work.
Its a Christmas dessert and very rich so not suitable for the summer.
I thought that all the puddings were a bit complex and not really reproducible. Baking really is a precise science and if you try to improvise it can be a disaster.

I love trifle and liked the look of this one from the start of the show so I was pleased it won. I hope they release the recipes for the other puddings as well. I might have a go at making them as I'm always looking for new ideas.

I don’t know if you’ve found the recipes on line yet but here’s a Link for them

Blubellz · 02/06/2022 20:04

Is there a thread for people who made this and how it turned out?

ODFOx · 03/06/2022 00:21

I had some after dinner this evening (completely home made but not by me) and it was absolutely delicious. A worthy winner. Rich and sweet but light and fruity simultaneously. If I could lay my hands on any amaretti I'd make one myself!

Seashor · 03/06/2022 08:35

I made it yesterday from bought ingredients. It was absolutely fabulous. I served it with a glass of chilled amaretto.
I was pleased it won because i. I LOVE trifle and ii. You could substitute ingredients and mix and match bought with home made.

CMOTDibbler · 03/06/2022 08:44

I'm serving mine today at our street party. I bought amaretti and lemon curd, made everything else.
I have also made coronation chicken fully old school using my mums recipe which she used to do at all big occasions, and a victoria sponge.

xsquared · 03/06/2022 12:21

Dd and dh made this and it looks impressive.

A lot of faff though; homemade Swiss roll, homemade lemon curd, home made ameretti biscuits.

However, I wont be having any of it as I cannot stand jelly.

balalake · 03/06/2022 12:36

I'm not.

Enjoyed eating a jubilee biscuit and muting the sound on the tv when the second reading of the services from St Paul's was on!

BigWoollyJumpers · 03/06/2022 14:50

I've just made one.... it's a bit of a disaster. I am sure it will taste nice, but it's a bit of a mess! The jelly soaked into the sponge, the coulis was runny, and the layers aren't very pronounced. I halved the recipe though, and used a lot of bought ingredients, and my bowl isn't quite right. Hey ho. Going to good friends later. I did warn them it might just turn out to be fruit and cream!!!!

Arenanewbie · 03/06/2022 22:45

@BigWoollyJumpers Did you use fresh custard, custard powder or make it from scrath?
Hope it went well with your friends.

BigWoollyJumpers · 04/06/2022 11:48

Actually in the end it firmed up, and tasted really nice. Friends kept back a few portions to eat over the weekend 😀

I was VERY lazy and used Waitrose Lemon Swiss roll, Hartleys Lemon Jelly, Waitrose Fresh Essential Custard, bought Amaretti, and only made the Mandarin Coulis, which didn't really thicken.... but as I say, tasted really nice...

@BigWoollyJumpers that looks so good!! 🍋🍊

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 04/06/2022 21:51

I made it half from scratch- Swiss roll , Amaretti biscuits , couli jelly and shards . Bought the curd and custard which I flavoured with lemon zest.

I like to bake and make desserts. This, IMO was leagues ahead of the competition and obviously the winner once they tasted it. Bar the cheesecake tart this was the only one that I desperately hankered after.

A deserving winner and one I'll be making for a sunny day!
