Who's going to make this at home? A fiddly trifle full of home made this and thats, it looks very pretty and also like a time consuming faff, destined to be poked around on plates as people fish out bits they like or don't like. Poor winner.8

Trifle is an abomination. All the wrong textures.

SoManyTshirts · 13/05/2022 08:59

I’ll be making a version of it and will be off to stock up on readymade components later. Hoping lemon blancmange comes back into fashion!

Trifle is a foolproof dessert for those that like it, cakes can fail to live up to expectations if you don’t get much practice baking.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/05/2022 09:05

Tesco lemon swiss roll £1.25. Hope they've ramped up production.

TickTockItsToughGuyOClock · 13/05/2022 09:11

It sounds delicious!

MsRinky · 13/05/2022 09:17

I am quite sure that the Queen would not countenance jelly in trifle.

ODFOx · 13/05/2022 09:18

I didn't watch it but a trifle which can be switched up or down from homemade to home assembled sounds ideal for the brief.
Thanks for the reminder: I'll be sure to look it up.

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/05/2022 09:19

I think we should be celebrating five ordinary home cooks getting to the final, not knocking the winner. Trifle is a very British pudding and it sounds good to me, although I'm not a jelly fan.

Zilla1 · 13/05/2022 09:21

Fiddly? Have you read the original recipe for coronation chicken?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/05/2022 09:26

I thought they had clearly picked one of each obvious pudding/dessert types. The bundt cake needs a special baking tin so was less accessible to the average home baker. The passionfruit tart could have been made with ready-made pastry or a bought flan case, but the cheesecake and frangipane fillings needed skill. Similar would apply to the other two. The unfortunate trifle haters here are very much in the minority. Trifle is a hugely popular celebration pudding, very British, not hard to make and not ruinously expensive. This one harks back to the lemon posset served at the Queen's wedding. Good choice.

PortiaFimbriata · 13/05/2022 09:28

I love a Bundt cake, but when I saw it on the shortlist I knew it couldn't be allowed to win because it's not accessible if you don't have the tin.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/05/2022 09:31

www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/lemon_swiss_roll_and_42467 All the recipes are online. This is the trifle.

me4real · 13/05/2022 09:35

I heard the creator say it was designed so that people can make it as easy or hard as they want.

SiobhanSharpe · 13/05/2022 09:36

So many irrelevant comments from people who clearly have food issues.
Why on earth would you imagine anyone is the least interested in your dislikes, especially when couched in such dramatic terms? (Boak, bleurgh, abomination etc).
It's just a fucking trifle.
If it appeals to you then make it and then tell us what was good or bad about it. That would at least be useful and informative. If not, don't.
Banging on about how you can't stand trifle, or jelly, or custard, or tinned fruit just makes you sound like a faddy nine-year-old.
No-one cares.

kickupafuss · 13/05/2022 09:39

I love trifle and liked the look of this one from the start of the show so I was pleased it won. I hope they release the recipes for the other puddings as well. I might have a go at making them as I'm always looking for new ideas.

This absolutely!

All the entries looked amazing, all looked very tricky to make by a complete amateur cook but the trifle looked the most achievable.
Before I even saw the entries, I guessed that a trifle should win. Its a truly quintissential British party pudding.

Hear, hear. Always reminds me of my parents having an uncouth chap round for a meal, cooked by my Mum, an excellent home cook. My Mum said 'Would you like some broccoli, David?' He sniggered and said 'No, it's horrible'. Prat.

Whitedamask · 13/05/2022 09:47

I thought it was a great pudding. The other cakes were beautiful but would have been far more difficult to copy at home.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/05/2022 09:49

The flavours sound lovely - at least to me - but what's it doing with jelly in it??!!!

You don't put jelly in a trifle!!! <Gavel> Grin

me4real · 13/05/2022 09:51

I don't think a lot of the stuff is all that available actually. And a weird mix of flavours.

Hobbesmanc · 13/05/2022 09:54

Trifle always seems slightly retro British- union jack bunting and Victory roll hair dos - so it's perfect. I've not had tinned mandarins for years but I felt all nostalgic for them today.

Antarcticant · 13/05/2022 09:56

It looks revolting - it ticks just about every box of what I most dislike in a pudding.

DaisyDozyDee · 13/05/2022 09:58

Trifle is a waste of the opportunity for a good pudding buffet. Why have one bowl of mixed up mush, when you could use the same ingredients for four or five different desserts that are actually tasty?

BarbaraofSeville · 13/05/2022 09:59

me4real · 13/05/2022 09:51

Orange and lemon is a 'weird mix of flavours' Confused?

The bottom of the BBC link states:

As a shortcut for this recipe, you can use ready-made versions for most of the components and just make the Swiss rolls and mandarin coulis from scratch. For the lemon curd, use 300g/10½oz ready-made lemon curd. Instead of the St Clement’s jelly, use 1 packet of lemon-flavoured jelly and follow the packet instructions to make 568ml/1 pint. For the custard, use 500ml/18fl oz ready-made custard. For the biscuits, use 100g/3½oz ready-made amaretti biscuits.

You really can buy all the ingredients including a ready made lemon swiss roll in just about any supermarket (maybe not Aldi, Lidl or M&S but certainly all the others)

I'm really not seeing the problem with this.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/05/2022 10:05

Swiss roll or trifle sponges, lemon curd, jelly, custard, cream, amaretti biscuits. All readily available in most supermarkets.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/05/2022 10:14

If you can't get amaretti biscuits, standard sponge fingers (lady fingers/savoiardi) will be absolutely fine.
