Cornwall!!

why do people pay stupid amounts to holiday here?
I nearly spat my coffee out in work today. A co worker has paid £1600 for a week in st Ives, last week of June!

she showed me it! It’s a pretty basic, one bedroomed cottage. Wtf!!

i have booked flights and an Airbnb in greece for just over £1000. I’ll admit I never holiday in the uk, because it just doesn’t feel like a proper holiday to me, but if I do it’s always a deal/ bargain Airbnb type thing.

what’s the attraction of Cornwall?
By all accounts it’s overcrowded cost a fortune to park , and eat out, and a pretty mediocre experience all round!

@interferringma - great thank you. I'm making a list!

iklboo · 13/05/2022 18:17

Bit of a left field one now. DS(16) will be meeting his online girlfriend for the first time - totally legit, we've spoken to her and her parents so no 25 stone Neanderthal waiting for him! Are there any places they can go & do fun stuff for a 'date' type day? We're happy to drive them if it's not too far. She lives in Helston.

Hugely overpriced, and whilst certain towns are perfectly nice , Personally for me I think it's poor value with a lot of second rate accommodation and very expensive too . Why not just go to Dorset or Tenby or Hastings or Whitstable or Broadstairs ? Similar in looks- without the huge distances to get there and not so expensive. Personally as OP said I would take Greece every time and think it's hugely hyped up

I live in Hastings as per my username. It's honestly nothing like Cornwall. Neither is Broadstairs or Whitstable.

Cornwall is IMO spectacularly and uniquely beautiful- those perfect sets of waves....

Userg1234 · 13/05/2022 19:02

There is an American travel writer called Rick Steves. In one of his books his vignette about Devon and Cornwall is "be prepared to be ripped off"

It’s called taking responsibility for canon footprint and future generations. We have a beautiful country to explore 🙄

These kind of comments make me howl. They usually come from people who have at least two children, have holidayed extensively in the past/or are too scared to go abroad😀Not to mention those who eat a meat heavy diet.
You do know that these things are having more of an impact on climate change than flying don’t you??

The pandemic made me realise, more than ever, already that I wanted to holiday abroad more.

i won’t be spending my hard earned on overpriced and mediocre places in the uk. like Cornwall.,
There’s a big world out there!

We love Cornwall and visit every September, and it's much better crowds-wise than summer. This year however we've bought a campervan so are planning to visit other places in the South West too. Love our little country, so beautiful round the coast! Smile

Severely disappointed with rick steins fish and chips. Had been really looking forward to it as well. Price was shocking!
Taken our camper to west Wales a fair bit. Love it!

This should be my specialist subject. How about they go kayaking from Porthleven Harbour? Or stand up paddlebaording? Or you can do they same at Coverack Harbour. They can have an ice cream and hot choc at Nauti but Ice afterwards.

I don't understand why people pay so much for St Ives. My in-laws live there and it's a nightmare during the summer. Overcrowded with rude visitors who think that Cornwall is a theme park. Then there's the rampaging seagulls, expensive food and no where to park. No thanks.

So you park in the Park and Ride at St Erth and take that spectacularly beautiful train ride down the coast to St Ives..

The advantage of staying there is that you get the beaches largely to yourself once all the day visitors have buggered off. I've had many a lovely evening sitting on a near-deserted beach watching some spectacular sunsets.

HeatherShiver · 13/05/2022 22:04

Just got back from a week in Cornwall.
Its beautiful, was not crowded, we paid £479 for a one bedroom flat with sea views and parking.
We go a lot, love Greece too tho!

Movinghouseatlast · 13/05/2022 22:14

I love Cornwall and I love Greece equally. How much do you think owners/cleaners are getting paid in Greece though? How do you think people live well if people are paying so.little for their services?

Crikeyalmighty · 13/05/2022 22:15

@Hastingsontheup You see I disagree, we used to live in Canterbury and I thought Broadstairs and whitstable very much had that similar feel, certainly the Dorset coast does. I don't dislike the Cornish coast al all, just think it's a long way to drive to , can be expensive and not guaranteed weather and for the same money I prefer other places.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/05/2022 22:17

I'm from that coast @Hastingsontheup. I even went to school in Broadstairs. It is nothing like Cornwall at all. It's flat for starters! There is no surf.

Crikeyalmighty · 13/05/2022 22:33

@P0larexpress Love tapas alley in old Benidorm!

dottiedodah · 14/05/2022 07:40

Allboysherebutme we are lucky enough to live in Dorset. Lulworth is beautiful. Also Tyneham nearby. Deserted village where everyone was turfed out in ww2 then never allowed back! Very beautiful and sad

Ferngreen · 14/05/2022 08:04

@P0larexpress
From this weeks Spectator. In response to your ill informed comments on flying.
A return flight from London to Barcelona emits 0.5t CO2 per passenger. That exceeds the annual per capita emission fo 36 nations accounting for 10% of the world's population.
Return flight from London to LA - 3.3t of CO2 equibvalent, more than the annual per capita emissions of 130 countries represeinting 53.7% of the global population.........do I need to go on.....

Harridan1981 · 14/05/2022 08:26

Kent is nothing like Cornwall. I grew up in Whitstable, lovely but not Cornwall.

KnitPurlKnitPurl · 14/05/2022 08:27

We live in Scotland and LOVE Cornwall. It's a long drive, but we make the most of the fact our schools break up last week of June and go straight away for a week or two.

The beaches are glorious, the weather is warmer than most parts of the UK, there is loads to do, haven't encountered grumpy locals or poor service. Love Cornwall and it's well worth the drive.

RockNess · 14/05/2022 08:30

Each to their own.

Cornwall is very lovely but a heck of a long way for me (from the North West).

I prefer abroad for the more reliable weather, better customer service, cheap, excellent quality wine (and the chance to embarrass myself putting my rusty language skills to the test ). Vive La France!

Ski4130 · 14/05/2022 08:34

I’m going to get my Cornish passport revoked for this (I’m from Fowey, but live up country now) but, whilst I love Cornwall, I think it’s over priced, too busy and the roads are a shambles during school holidays and I avoid going back to visit then.

We went to the Gower last summer, and I couldn’t believe how beautiful, spacious and not busy it was. I’d go there again in a heartbeat during school holidays, but avoid Cornwall, which makes me sad.

It was my uncle’s memorial service last summer, in Fowey, and it was a real struggle for some people to find accommodation that didn’t bankrupt them so they could make it down. Prices are ridiculous.

Sceptre86 · 14/05/2022 08:38

I'd love to go to Cornwall, Devon, Norfolk etc but the cost is prohibitive. We are a family of 5 and when we can go all inclusive to Spain (2k) where we are guaranteed warm weather it just doesn't make sense. Maybe when the kids are older. Shouldn't be too difficult to understand that the UK has some stunning areas that give other countries a run for their money.

MadameFantabulosa · 14/05/2022 08:39

I love Cornwall. We have friends there and often do a house swap for a week. So we have lovely cliff top walks and Kynance Cove for a week, and they get a week in Central London fitting in as much theatre as they can and museums.

It's relative surely. The cost of living is lower than the UK.

OnceMoreWithoutFeeling · 14/05/2022 08:42

I used to feel the sam way about people who went for hideous package deals in a resort and spent two weeks by the pool seeing nothing. Then I had kids, tried holidaying with them and suddenly understood why that might seem like a pretty sensible option for some people 😂 Still not for us, we soldier on with AirBNBs and days out because that's just how we like to holiday but it did make me realise that it really is different strokes for different folks, and there is no point judging how other people choose to enjoy their limited free time and resources as long as they're not stopping me enjoying mine. What do you get out of this wee judgefest really? Go to Greece and enjoy it! Some people, for whatever reason, prefer Cornwall and are happy t pay for it. Live and let live!
