Food snobbery

Feckingfeck · 10/05/2022 23:20

DM always buys "good eggs" I mean nearly £4 a box from Waitrose. I ate one. Wasn't really too impressed- I mean not sure what I could hope for from an egg really?!

What things do you insist on buying branded?

Are there things you simply wont skimp or get own brands of?

AIBU to think any free range egg is just the same as the next?

Nope. I buy what I can afford.
But would I have some spare money I wouldn't be spending it on eggs!

Chaoslatte · 10/05/2022 23:24

I buy organic eggs, not because they taste better (I don’t even eat them, DP does and he doesn’t particularly notice/care) but because the welfare standards are better than free range: www.soilassociation.org/take-action/organic-living/what-is-organic/organic-eggs/

SpindleInTheWind · 10/05/2022 23:27

Is that 'food snobbery' though? Maybe they're very high welfare free range eggs?

I pay the extra for organic milk. I'm really not a food snob. I'm keen on supporting British farmers who are trying to invest in animal welfare and soil sustainability though.

I suppose that makes me some sort of eco twat who knits my own dandelions.

Haus1234 · 10/05/2022 23:33

We buy the nice bacon - Taste the Difference etc. Its not snobbery, it’s just quite a lot nicer!

Feckingfeck · 10/05/2022 23:36

Nope DM is not welfare concerned 😦

She says the oranger yolks taste nicer... any thoughts?

Pale blue eggs just look so much prettier though. In the first lock down I was able to buy a tray of eggs that would usually go to a very high end deli on the Kings Road. The eggs were mixed colours and looked lovely. They also tasted better than the usual ones from Waitrose.

The things that I will only buy branded - President butter, Heinz beans and Fairy washing powder.

BestestBrownies · 10/05/2022 23:37

I have really sensitive taste buds and can genuinely tell the difference between high and low quality food, whereas DP can’t. Therefore I am really picky about what I will eat and he’s not.

This doesn’t mean I only buy branded stuff, and I just don’t have the budget to shop in Waitrose and the local farm shop. Even if I did, I’d still rely on the actual taste not the label. That said, Milkybar beats any other white chocolate (even the stupidly expensive ones), and Marmite doesn’t really have any close competition (although they have changed the recipe recently which I’m not very happy about).

Orange yolks do taste nicer.

Janedoe82 · 10/05/2022 23:38

Only branded thing I insist on is Diet Coke and cornflakes.

Keladrythesaviour · 10/05/2022 23:38

If they're Burford Browns she's not being unreasonable, they're delicious and so much better than other supermarket free range eggs! I will definitely pay more for good quality eggs.

Lentil63 · 10/05/2022 23:41

I’ve been vegetarian for nearly 55 years. Before the whole plant based thing by a country mile but I absolutely respect and admire vegans.
May e ‘good eggs’ are high welfare in which case the taste isn’t the point.

SiobhanSharpe · 10/05/2022 23:42

I like high end French butter too, Lescure from 'Trose. And Burford Bowns extra large eggs. The deep orange yolks taste lovely, almost as good as our own hens' eggs when we used to keep chickens.

BritBoxBangers · 10/05/2022 23:43

Maldon sea salt - I love that stuff! Tried very pricey pepper made no difference, so cheap peppercorns.

Actually not too bothered about brands - I’m just sometimes overly reliant as I’m a bit lazy.

Mossstitch · 10/05/2022 23:50

I have super sensitive taste buds, can tell the difference between sea salt and normal table salt and yes there is a big difference in eggs. I used to have my own hens before they died of old age at about 8 yrs old and I could tell which hen had laid each egg. The only ones anywhere near the same (but still not as good) are Burford browns🐔🥚😋

MaChienEstUnDick · 10/05/2022 23:50

Orange yolks do taste nicer imo. But the thing that makes eggs taste the nicest is freshness.

KenAdams · 11/05/2022 00:03

If they are Clarence Court then it's totally reasonable. They are God tier eggs and taste completely different and so much nicer than other eggs.

MrOllivander · 11/05/2022 00:06

I'm a salt and pepper snob Blush
This one is my preference and tellicherry black pepper

In the 1st lockdown, on one of our allowed daily walks, my son & I stumbled upon a local farm... they have what's known as an egg shed (honesty box type thing) never since have I bought a supermarket egg!
I've bought the regular free range, organic & even the most expensive eggs from shops... not a single one compares to farm eggs!
They are laid often the same day if not just the day before. Shop eggs are often over a week old. That's where you will taste the difference

sst1234 · 11/05/2022 00:08

It’s like most things in life. People are basically telling us they can afford more than the next person. A bit like wearing brands. Those that think £4 eggs taste better. Those that think corn fed chicken is nicer. Those that think certain items are more ethical. Those that tell us about sustainable and green shopping habits. They have the time and the spare money to spend on these things. And I’m doing so, many like to publicise their virtues in the process.

MarmiteCoriander · 11/05/2022 00:18

For those that think bright orange yolks are much tastier, you do realise that dietary supply and supplements can alter the yolk colour and not necessarily affect actual taste???

I don't scrimp on the cheapest toilet paper- like sand paper and thin as anything IMO!

DH insists colemans mustard is better than other brands.

Most others though, I'm happy to use alternatives

How do you know she doesn't care about welfare?

BobLep0nge · 11/05/2022 00:32

HP brown sauce, Kellogg's corn flakes, president butter and marmite are about the only things I buy branded.

Notcontent · 11/05/2022 00:33

I don’t think it’s necessarily snobbery. People in the UK are funny about food - it’s somehow seen as snobby to care about food quality. I don’t care about brands but I try to get nice, unprocessed food. Do yes, I do buy the nice eggs you speak of! But I don’t eat meat so the eggs are a treat.

honeyrider · 11/05/2022 00:36

I buy organic eggs due to welfare as I studied poultry husbandry in college years ago and used to keep rescue hens up until 18 months ago and I care about the hens. It was amazing to see nature kick in whenever I adopted a new flock of rescue hens and they'd see daylight for the first time, have dust baths and root around in the ground and how changing their diet can have their feathers growing back.

Free range eggs that have a good yellow yolks is often down to food colouring added to their drinking water or food.

nocoolnamesleft · 11/05/2022 00:39

I have only one thing to say: duck eggs. Yum.
