Food snobbery

Feckingfeck · 10/05/2022 23:20

DM always buys "good eggs" I mean nearly £4 a box from Waitrose. I ate one. Wasn't really too impressed- I mean not sure what I could hope for from an egg really?!

What things do you insist on buying branded?

Are there things you simply wont skimp or get own brands of?

AIBU to think any free range egg is just the same as the next?

We buy high welfare meat and eggs. I don’t think that’s food snobbery - I’d rather go without than buy non-ethical meat & eggs.

I’ll admit to snobbery around butter. Dh will only cook with Lescure and we have Isigny Ste-Mère for spreading. We also only buy ‘proper’ pasta from the Italian deli where we also buy our oils. So yes, we’re poncey.

Ethical meat? Do me a favour 🤣🤣🤣🤣

RosesAndHellebores · 12/05/2022 06:55

@ArtVandalay charente poitou is best Wink. However, this talk of butter has made me fancy a white bread, fish funger sandwich with real butter, ketchup and salt and vinegar crisps Grin.

I do agree that there is a tendency to feed children in the UK beige food and it isn't helpful. Ours ate what we ate and it was surprising how many people were surprised.

Doubleraspberry · 12/05/2022 13:09

Thank you; I'd made the effort and found it, so it's definitely on my planning list. This Friday sadly is a birthday in our house and by demand we're having Taco Bell. Sigh.

Im intrigued .... how was it?

It tasted absolutely no different than usual. DH confirmed this. I shall be sticking to my Aldi tomatoes in future! If others want to spend £1.20 on tinned tomatoes more fool them.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/05/2022 13:49

WTF has happened to the formatting on this thread?

Anyway, on the tomatoes, Mutti might be noticeably better if you're making a simple tomato pasta sauce or something like tomatoes on toast pan con tomate but maybe not noticeably better in something like a chilli where Napolina or even Aldi/Lidi poshest level give the same result at a less than a third of the cost.

I usually buy what's on offer but I always buy the best eggs that I can afford, good butter and decent wine.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/05/2022 18:13

I agree about the mutti tinned tomatoes , pointless in a chilli or bolgnese- brilliant if using for making tomato based pasta sauce or bruschetta etc

What on Earth is Rola Cola?

Pepsi is horrible, I drink Coke if I ever have that, which is rare. But never heard of "rola cola"? If it is worse than Pepsi, it must be grim!

Meh Fentimans Cola is delicious. Tastes like coke but none of the horrid chemical taste of Coke.

StarDolphins · 12/05/2022 21:48

I only buy organic eggs but everything else I just get what I like & can afford!

I will only have fever tree soft drinks now. I started when the sugar tax came in and my usual soft drinks and mixers all started adding sweetener. Found fever tree and that was that. I haven't yet found one I don't like and they have less sugar in than my old choices...any yes their cola is lovely.

newnamethanks · 12/05/2022 21:58

I forgot about soft drinks, don't bother with them often. Fentimans or San Pellegrino please.

Douzy · 12/05/2022 22:58

Yes, I don't often have soft drinks, but won't touch anything with sweeteners. Fentimans Ginger Beer is fab. Appletize is also good.

Rola Cola is a Peter Kay joke - represents cheap generic cola.

It’s not snobbery. It’s having standards. Some of the crap in the shops. Go for the high end and better quality every time.

We're not terribly well off, but I try to buy (and live) as organically as possible. Most clothes are second hand, but I won't scrimp on food - that doesn't necessarily equate to brands, though.

We grow a huge amount of our own veg and salad (raised beds in the garden, greenhouses, and an allotment), keep our own chickens for the eggs (we're Pescatarian so we keep them as pets long after their laying days pass the supermarket best), bake most of our own bread, cakes, etc. For things we can't grow, I get from a proper local vegetable shop, the Italian deli nearby, or the local farm shop. Fish comes from the fishmongers. I don't buy tinned tomatoes. Currently dairy and soya free as DS has allergies and I'm breastfeeding, so I do buy the odd vegan cheese and we rely on df butter, but I won't buy the supermarket own brands as they taste like plastic (can't wait to eat real dairy again though).

I don't know if I'd call it food snobbery? I just get what I know is healthy and tastes nice. We only have our bodies once, and I also want my kids to grow up knowing where food comes from. (I'm not one of these straight edge sorts, don't get me wrong... wine and I have a very happy relationship 😁🍷)

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 11/05/2022 07:17

No eggs are free range at the minute. All chickens are being kept inside I believe, due to bird flu.
Anyway, for me it's bacon. I buy the 'outdoor reared' stuff. We only make a bacon sandwich about twice a year and I want to know the pig has been raised with high welfare standards.

Flockdown ended last week.

Justdiscovered · 13/05/2022 07:00

I would definitely treat myself to ‘good eggs’ if I had the money. So much nicer when poached or even when making cakes.
I think I know the difference because I grew on fresh eggs from a farm near my house, i might not if I hadn’t developed that distinction ( I don’t have a great palate for other things!!)

Rosehugger · 13/05/2022 07:00

I buy Aldi stuff because it's not only cheaper but often better - their baked beans are like Heinz before they shrank the beans and replaced half of them with sauce.

Their organic eggs and San Marzano tomatoes are really good.

In the 1st lockdown, on one of our allowed daily walks, my son & I stumbled upon a local farm... they have what's known as an egg shed (honesty box type thing) never since have I bought a supermarket egg!
I've bought the regular free range, organic & even the most expensive eggs from shops... not a single one compares to farm eggs!
They are laid often the same day if not just the day before. Shop eggs are often over a week old. That's where you will taste the difference

I buy my eggs from the farm shop a mile away. They're not quite as good as the ones from the farm shop 5 miles away, but I can't justify a 10 mile round trip just for eggs. The second farm shop does great meat as well, and their sausages are the best I've ever had, so I do there from time to time. The farm shop apples are nicer than any from a supermarket, too.

There are a couple of things that I only buy branded - Lurpak spreadable and Robinsons squash (the only thing I can keep down when I have a migraine), but apart from that I'm not fussed.

I've found that some Waitrose essentials (notably mature cheddar, smoked bacon and tea bags) are often as good as the premium range in some other supermarkets.

Crikeyalmighty · 11/05/2022 08:17

Oh and I think Branson beans are better than heinz

Me too! Heinz taste slightly sweeter imo, and not as tomato-ey.

I blame my late DP, he wouldn't eat any other sort and now I don't like any other sort, either.

I am not brand loyal so will buy what I like the taste of including own brands etc. However, we keep bees and you really can taste the difference between locally foraged honey and supermarket blended stuff. In the summer our honey tastes of blackberries as bees love brambles.

I used to get local honey from a farm shop and it was lovely. I started getting it because I was told that it helps with hay fever symptoms, because the mix of plants visited by the bees will mirror that which is in the air in your area and you gradually get desensitised.

It may have been auto-suggestion, but after a couple of years, my hay fever was much improved.

Sadly, the producer lost their bees to varoa approx 5 years ago, and as they were getting on, didn't replace them. My hay fever has been getting worse over the last few years.
