Food snobbery

Feckingfeck · 10/05/2022 23:20

DM always buys "good eggs" I mean nearly £4 a box from Waitrose. I ate one. Wasn't really too impressed- I mean not sure what I could hope for from an egg really?!

What things do you insist on buying branded?

Are there things you simply wont skimp or get own brands of?

AIBU to think any free range egg is just the same as the next?

I always make sure I buy a certain level of tinned chopped tomatoes as they aren't watery. Its not snobbery they are just far better to cook with.
The best is actually Costco and they work out pretty cheap followed by napoli.

pedropony76 · 11/05/2022 00:41

Heinz beans or nothing

Feckingfeck · 11/05/2022 00:44

Burfords they are!

Wasted in an omelette though surely.

Does snazzy salt really make a difference? What difference does it make ? 🤓

I was quite snobby with food as my parents always bought branded food & tescos finest, but when I moved out I discovered Aldi and I love their food! The only branded thing I can not part with is my Heinz ketchup

Feckingfeck · 11/05/2022 00:47

@SpindleInTheWind

Multiple conversations over multiple years living with her (27.5 years to be exact!). If the most expensive eggs were battery she would think they are best... I often question her logic.

I, as a child, refused any sweetcorn that wasn't golden giant- I could and still can taste the difference 😉

DS however, loves a good Aldi purchase he is usually just happy to choose something!

Marmite, there is nothing like it on earth!

And Napolina tinned tomatoes asthey actually contain chopped tomatoes rather than red water with a couple of lumps in it. They are more expensive but it works out cheaper as you only need one tin for a recipe than two or more strained cheaper ones.

And we are on a v low income.

I buy organic eggs due to welfare as I studied poultry husbandry in college years ago and used to keep rescue hens up until 18 months ago and I care about the hens. It was amazing to see nature kick in whenever I adopted a new flock of rescue hens and they'd see daylight for the first time, have dust baths and root around in the ground and how changing their diet can have their feathers growing back.

Free range eggs that have a good yellow yolks is often down to food colouring added to their drinking water or food.

Poultry husbandry is going to be a new favourite phrase! Thanks for that 🤓😳

Have you tried plum tomatoes? Make a lovely rich taste regardless of how cheap they are

Absolutely disagree with op re tomatos. Plum is better for cheaper choices, but good san mazano or napoliana are not at all comparable. I'm back at the value side of the price range now, so plum with a pinch of sugar it is , but I don't pretend it's as good taste wise- it's just not. Same goes really for meat. We all know that free range corn fed tastes better, but it comes down to affordability. I buy to my budget. I do save for a free range local Kelly bronze for the Christmas bird though. £120 instead of supermarket £55- worth every penny . We did a blind taste test of crowns to compare once and the brined supermarket bird was lovely UNTIL you tried the free range kelly.

Wetblanket78 · 11/05/2022 01:01

Any free range eggs I'm happy with. I don't see the point in the battery eggs the size of them. They don't taste anywhere near as good and not much cheaper. My brother in law always insisted on battery eggs. Until they had some of ours poached free range and put her foot down

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/05/2022 01:01

£120 for meat for one meal is a months worth of food here, I couldnt justify that even if I had saved up.

Unless it tastes of Jesus kisses.

And comes with a free car.

SkerryVore · 11/05/2022 01:37

As long as eggs are fresh, high welfare and free range (not at the moment though), they should taste good.

I only eat small quantities of high welfare meat, usually from a farm near me. I buy organic whenever possible, and only use Maldon Sea Salt!

pooonastick · 11/05/2022 01:43

I moved overseas 7 years ago . Where I live now, I am so much more aware of where my food comes from and what is in season . So I can afford to make really good choices when it comes to buying food . I buy mostly from our local market. Family and friends back in UK probably think that this makes me a food snob. They don't look at where their food has been flown in from . When I show them that their beans are from Kenya they look amazed! If you can afford it, I think spending money on better quality food is a good way to go . Of course many people cannot make this choice but I am able support the local food industry where I live.

worriedatthistime · 11/05/2022 01:44

Ketchup , has to be heinz
I don't use it often though

Ragwort · 11/05/2022 01:52

Burford Eggs are definitely worth paying for (in my opinion) and would make an omelette taste much nicer - again, in my opinion.
Mutti tinned tomatoes are now my favourite. Pasta brands vary hugely and yes, I can tell the difference between 'value' pasta and a good brand.
I am happy to pay more for better tasting food ... and am fortunate that I can afford to. I would much rather eat better tasting food at home than have a takeaway or go out for a meal.

Marchitectmummy · 11/05/2022 01:52

Feckingfeck · 10/05/2022 23:36

Nope DM is not welfare concerned 😦

She says the oranger yolks taste nicer... any thoughts?

If the eggs are the Burford Brown's from Waitrose they do taste very different to me, stronger taste. My parents insist on those, none available they go without eggs!

GiraffeInTheSky · 11/05/2022 01:55

Meat from the local butchers. Much more expensive but I know where it comes from and that the animals are well-cared for.

Eggs from there too.

Veg from local producers when we can but as a lone parent who can't go to many shops, this is limited.

We do what we can to buy decent stuff and only what we need and as ethically produced as possible, within my limitations of budget and being able to physically go to the places that sell well-produced things but do not deliver. 😣

Yes it tastes different. It makes sense that it would. The extra expense sucks but I think food has been far too cheap at the expense of sustainability and animal welfare so I'll suck it up in terms of costs as much as I can and cook in batches and eat less meat and cook more creatively to make things stretch further.

GiraffeInTheSky · 11/05/2022 01:56

Our local fish place is brilliant thoughand delivers so we can get plenty of lovely fresh fish. But again, the expense hurts! Worth it though.

allboysherebutme · 11/05/2022 02:51

Organic eggs are the best, they really do taste nicer. X
I have to have anchor butter.

allboysherebutme · 11/05/2022 02:54

Apparently the oranger the yolk the nicer the egg. Clarence court eggs are lovely. X

AlmostAJillSandwich · 11/05/2022 03:05

Food wise i'm really not fussy, the only thing i'm really specific about is toilet paper, i like 3 ply! Usually buy Nicky elite 3 ply, wish it wasnt scented/lotioned though, but since we don't have a costco card anymore, needs must.

Scottishskifun · 11/05/2022 04:22

@Feckingfeck Yes tried plum tomatoes and smashing them down I still find it a bit watery in comparison.

Kathers92 · 11/05/2022 05:46

I do admit we got our own chickens in lockdown and the eggs are so much better. The eggs are also blue. The eggs do taste better on free range birds and the yolks are more orange, so I'm very pleased ours are allowed out again

Thisismynamenow · 11/05/2022 05:56

Only brands I insist on are Pepsi max and Coca Cola - I really don't like Rola Cola.

Everything else I can eat off brand, though I do prefer cathedral city cheese and daddies ketchup but not brand loyal
