Does a score of 80/90ish on SATs mean they'll not get pass marks at GCSE?

Worried about DC's KS2 SATs this week. Teacher said they'll scrape an 80, which I think is nonsense as they're getting more than 3 on each paper but I daren't hope for more than 90. I'm really concerned about DC's future. I'm a teacher and looking at my Y10/Y11 data even my grade 4 pupils seem to have achieved 102ish. AIBU to worry about this? Anyone had their DC get a low SAT score and get good GCSE grades? Good enough for an apprenticeship or something anyway, I'm not too fussed for Grade 9s, just want DC to have opportunities.

That is a very low score. I would be seriously concerned about children with this score. How many is he getting right on each paper?

Yeah tell him his entire future is in jeopardy because young children with SEN always do so much better when put under immense pressure 🤔

Discovereads · 08/05/2022 21:59

YANBU to worry but YABU to think SAT grades are a reliable predictor of GCSE grades. Channel your worries into getting an Ed Psych to do a full assessment of him for the dyspraxia suspected by the SENCO as well as any other learning difficulties he may have. The diagnosis should come with recommendations for accommodations to aid his learning and for future exams. A lot can happen in the next five years before GCSEs.

How did he do in his KS1 SATS?
The sats reflect the school.. If he did well/average in kS1 sats then I would say let down by the school and has potential. You may need to get tutors.

Poorly. But I don't remember being given a breakdown, just told that he scored very low.

You’ve had som eharsh replies on here, OP. I’m sorry. My DS didn’t do brilliantly at SATS, was written off in secondary school, bullied mercilessly, so we home-edded him. He got Merit at BTech and is in uni.

They are though, for the majority of kids. OP given you're a teacher I'm stunned you haven't sought an EHCP before now - poor kid has been struggling for years and you've left it up to his school to deal with. You've been given good advice about applying for one and appealing the inevitable refusal. You need to do this urgently. He's already going to be well into secondary before anything happens.

Hercisback · 08/05/2022 22:17

You can find out the standardised score from the score on the paper by googling it. It might not be as low as 80. I'd hope both you and primary school were aware if it was going to be that low.

I'm assuming you don't teach a core subject based on your knowledge of SATs.

Does your SEN training not include what an Ed Psych does?

Not wanting to be too outing with it but I've pushed for an ECHP a few times and keep getting conflicting info and just a lack of response entirely (have to request from local authority here) or school would block it and say not necessary etc etc. And when they said it wasn't necessary I kind of trusted the school more than I perhaps should have in hindsight. SAT scores were only recently discussed.

I don't know what this educational psych thing is but I'll look in to it for secondary.

@beetuljoos I asked for the SENCO of DD2's school to apply for an EHCP for her. She refused, twice within a week or two, a direct request from her manager, on the basis that there would be no evidence that she needed one.

I put in a Subject Access Request to the school. When I got all of the data that the school held on DD2, including testing that I hadn't been updated on, I used that information to apply for the EHC needs assessment.

The LA agreed to assess, then the SENCO wrote a very supportive k3 (school's evidence) saying that they couldn't meet need.

Don't wait for them to want to help. Start the process yourself. Don't hide the fact that the school don't support your request - I said that this itself was evidence that the school couldn't meet her needs without help.

I have three boys.
Oldest is doing gcses this year. During his SAT'S the primary school did booster sessions, and sent past papers home.
Middle son no SAT'S as 2020 covid year.
Younger starting SATs this week. No past papers, no boosters, sweet F all.....

Oldest sons lowest mark was 106. He is predicted 4s in gcses. His mate got higher marks and he's predicted 7s. His other mate got 90 to 100 and he is hoovering around 2s and 3s for GCSEs.

titchy · 08/05/2022 22:23

Yes rather odd a teacher doesn't know what an Ed Psych is...Confused

Nonimai · 08/05/2022 22:24

My son got 82 (I think) in English. I was told he was ‘remedial’ . He was tested multiple times for dyslexia through out high school but nothing was proven. He got a 5 in his English GCSE. He really struggles to remember things though.

Tigerandthetea · 08/05/2022 22:25

I got 3c in my SATs. Got 12 As at GCSE and AAAA in A Levels. I earn 6 figures before the age of 30. It is entirely possible that they will be fine.

sounds like shit teachers if I’m honest.

Tigerandthetea · 08/05/2022 22:26

Ok I am obviously not that smart with my bolds… meant to be A*s

Yep, shit parent here, thanks.

I have asked regularly and been assured he's making progress, not doing THAT badly, has some delays but that an ECHP is not needed. I'm not a primary teacher and I trusted their assessment. Clearly that was the wrong decision but they are the professionals.

And yes, I'm a teacher, but secondary is very different and I have nothing to do with SEND assessments.

OP posts:
beetuljoos · 08/05/2022 22:29

And they have had tutoring since they were in Y2 (no tutor sat me down and said "bloody hell this kid needs an ECHP" either which added to me thinking it was okay) so I've not done nothing. I work full time and am not with their dad and I'm doing my very very best with the time and knowledge I have.

Not really, most secondary school subject teachers don’t have any interaction with an Ed Psych. Especially if not teaching core subjects.

ScrollingLeaves · 08/05/2022 22:31

Would tutoring help? It doesn’t seem a good idea to go on as he is and hope for the best really.

I don’t know what the data was when you did GCSEs, but you must realise how unusual this is. According to data from 2019 on this link only 2% of low prior attainers got grade 5s in E&M and their A8 score was 21.2.

I applied for this with the LA in October. It was denied.
