To ask if you lost weight when you came off the pill?

I’m currently on cerazette and at 44 I’m thinking of coming off. I’m only on it for heavy periods not contraception anymore. I’m really worried the heavy periods will come back (currently don’t hVe a period on it) but I’m overweight and hands are quite fat / swollen. A friend said coming off the pill may help me lose some weight and lose the puffiness in my fingers. Did you lose any when coming off the pill? Did heavy period return? Thanks.

No I put on weight! But that is poss lockdown related

Daisycat76 · 07/05/2022 19:15

No, sorry to tell you but I didn't. Stayed exactly the same weight. My periods got heavier, and PMS has gotten awful. However, I came off it because I got terrible migraines and they have now thankfully stopped!

Springandsummerarecoming · 07/05/2022 19:15

Oh. I’m about 3.5 stone overweight so really can’t afford to put it on! 🤣

I did. Loads. And it stayed off.

I then had an endometrial ablation for the heavy periods. I only wish I had done both sooner!

Ooh I don’t like the sound of that! Thank you for being honest though.

We’re you overweight to start with? How much did you lose? Did you make any other changes or was it all down to the pill?

Cerazette made me put on 4 stone! My doctor was adamant the pill didn't make women put on weight but I had so many other side effects I paid to see a private doctor for tests and they confirmed my suspicions that the pill does make some women put on weight because they don't tolerate hormones very well.

If you type in cerazette on here you'll find lots of threads about it and weight gain. I stopped it and changed to a copper coil and lost a few pounds without trying and when I did diet I lost the 4 stone plus a little bit more. I couldn't shift a pound whilst on cerazette and constantly felt bloated and uncomfortable. I think if it didn't stop my periods I wouldn't have carried on with it for as long but that was the trade off for me.

Itique · 07/05/2022 19:21

Yes, i believe some women react to hormones with weight gain / loss.
For me: gained weight on the pill. Only stayed on the pill for a few months. Lost it as soon as I came off. No other dietary / exercise changes.
I initially gained weight on HRT but after 3/4 months it has come off again. No other changes.

Springandsummerarecoming · 07/05/2022 19:26

Yes this is it for me. If I could guarantee I would lose weight I’d accept that for the heavy and painful periods but I don’t want to stay struggling to lose weight and add the periods on too. I feel so fat and bloated and self conscious though. I will have a search at previous threads.

I took a break from the pill (microgynon) after being on it for 10years and honestly it made no difference to my life. I thought removing the hormones would give a drastic change but it didn’t. But saying that I only gained weight whilst on the pill 6years into it due to excessively eating out which I lost due to not being able to during covid (before coming off the pill). I’m back on it now as it’s more convenient. But don’t expect some miraculous change if you do come off it,

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 07/05/2022 19:29

Ive never gained or lost weight because of the pill.

Springandsummerarecoming · 07/05/2022 19:31

Yeah I’m kind of hoping the weight will just fall off in a few weeks - but I’m not that lucky 🤣

I've been on northisterone for 18 months.

I've put on weight. I can't deny some of that is lockdown and poor choices but I'm definitely finding I out it on easier.

I'm hoping that when I have my hysterectomy and come off it I'll lose the weight easier (clearly I can't just rely on stopping it unfortunately 🙈🤣)

But someone told me the pill does make it hard for some woman to manage their weight by putting on on easier and it being harder to lose.

Whaleandsnail6 · 07/05/2022 21:14

I gained a stone on the pill. I cant say for certain it was the pill or whether I let my eating and exercise slip too much combined with being nearly 40 but since coming off the pill a month ago, I'm finding it easier to loose weight whilst eating healthier and exercising. When I was on the pill, no matter what effort I put in, the weight didn't seem to come off but now I'm off it I've lost 3 pounds already. Hopefully it will stay off combined with better eating and exercise habits.

Hako · 07/04/2024 23:43

I know this is an old post, but OP any updates? Did you come off the pill? Any success in the weight loss and puffy fingers? ( both of which I’m struggling with!) thanks!

TextureSeeker · 07/04/2024 23:49

I'm on cerazette. I took a break from it a few years ago and it made no difference to my weight at all. I had horrendous pms when off it so went back on. I've recently lost a stone and a half and I don't think being on the pill made it any harder than it would have been otherwise. People react differently to hormones though, I just wouldn't pin all of your hopes on stopping it being a miracle cure. All I learnt when I stopped it was that I'm much happier/more stable on it.

Katemax82 · 08/04/2024 00:07

I did! I've been off the pill ages now and antidepressants and am a stone lighter than when I was on it

NamingConundrum · 08/04/2024 00:15

Not the pill but mirena coil. Puffy fingers etc. Lost 5kg first month water retention. Another 5kg in next few months.

Jamy88 · 26/03/2025 20:05

I've been off yacella now for 7 weeks and so bloated, I've gained 3-4lbs.. has this happened to anyone else?
