How much would you expect this meal to cost?

I'm not sure if I'm a bit unrealistic with my expectation here so I thought I'd see what wise Mumsnetters think!

We had a meal out at popular chain Italian restaurant. We ordered:

4 x main meals (3 x pizzas and 1 x pasta dish)
1 x meal from child menu (pasta dish)
4 x soft drinks (3 x Coca Cola, 1 x Sprite)

No starters, no desserts, no alcoholic drinks.

What would you roughly expect the total of the bill to be? (Not London if that makes a difference?!)

We went to a local Italian bistro, looked a bit 70s and tired.
It was similar to an expensive but very nice pub with ambitions that we like.
Food not special and a small helping. Won't be there long I think.

CoralPaperweight · 06/05/2022 08:50

My money saving tip wherever is just to ask for tap water for the table rather than buy the expensive soft drinks. £10-15 of your bill would've been on drinks I expect OP.

JoanThursday · 06/05/2022 08:52

I was going to say £75 and then saw your post!

As a treat for the kids, we ordered a five guys through deliveroo at the weekend. (Their call, they did some great stuff we wanted to recognise). We all had small burgers and ordered two regular size fries between the 4 of us. Around £45 including delivery. I nearly fell over!

newbiename · 06/05/2022 08:54

About £80-90

ChampagneLassie · 06/05/2022 08:55

I don't really know what you're comaining about. Inflation hit 10% prices and wages are up. I'd have guessed £80. You could see menu have an idea of prices before choosing to go there. I don't think you'd get simmilar cheaper elsewhere.

I was going to say around about £60. Things have got so pricy!

Here's mine from the weekend if anyone wants to take a guess:

Independent cafe at the seaside
1 all day breakfast
1 goat's cheese salad
1 Kid's sausage, chips and peas
1 coke
1 apple juice
1 bottled water

Any guesses?

£35 ?

Blinky21 · 06/05/2022 08:57

85?

user75 · 06/05/2022 08:58

Zizzi is priced to discount - taste card is 50% off and they have other offers at the moment.

glitterfairy88 · 06/05/2022 08:58

Around £60-£65

silverbubbles · 06/05/2022 09:05

£80

Leftbutcameback · 06/05/2022 09:07

£70

I still can't get past the fact that some people study the menu to such an extent that they can automatically tot up the bill when the table places their order. That's some skill.

It’s hardly rocket science! You pretty much all had the same stuff!

If pizza and a soft drink costs £20 your bill will be around £90.

If pizza and a soft drink costs £15 you bill will be around £70.

How hard was that?

65ish

StaunchMomma · 06/05/2022 09:16

I found Five Guys shocking last week. Literally 3 cheeseburgers, 3 fries, 2 shakes & a coke - £52.

I swear it wasn't that much pre Covid! Or maybe not eating out during lockdowns has made us more aware of the cost of it?

SushiShopSearch · 06/05/2022 09:16

It's going to cost £70 give or take. Pizzas are notoriously expensive for such cheap ingredients.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 06/05/2022 09:19

£60

Leftbutcameback · 06/05/2022 09:20

Yep, prices have gone up pretty much everywhere around here. Around 10% or so I would estimate generally. They are really struggling for staff as well.

Hallyup89 · 06/05/2022 09:21

I guessed £75 before you said it (honestly!!) Yeah, prices have no doubt increased, but I don't think that's too bad for a family night out.

I'm not "complaining". I'm asking if my expectations are unrealistic. I see that they are. End of story, really. Where have I complained?

I’d say the price was about £10 more than what I’d expect personally. We went to pizza express a couple of months ago and spent similar on 3 kids meals (so starter, main and dessert plus 2 drinks each) and 3 adult pizzas and drinks (2 of which were gin). I think DH had a discount code of some sort though which reduced the price somewhat. In future plan it a bit better so it doesn’t come as a shock, I always check the menus out online first.

MasterBeth · 06/05/2022 09:27

What's the eye roll for?

Congratulations if you have enough money to wander through life without checking the prices on stuff.

Brainwave89 · 06/05/2022 09:30

Zizzis and no voucher? I would say 90.

SockFluffInTheBath · 06/05/2022 09:30

I roughly tot it up in my head as people order (if I’m paying for everyone) but that’s a throwback to skint days.

KevinTheKoala · 06/05/2022 09:32

£85-90. Adults meals tend to cost up to £16, kids meals usually cost a set amount maybe £6, drinks are always expensive (even soft drinks) and average to about £3 each.

Geezabreak82 · 06/05/2022 09:32

£70-80? Price of Italian food seems to have gone up like everything else, even though it's not particularly expensive to make.
