To boil and cool my baby's bath water?

Posting on AIBU for traffic as bathtime is fast approaching, sorry if it's not appropriate for this board!!

I was just FaceTiming my mum when I said in passing "ugh it's bath night tonight, I'd better start getting the kettle going soon" and she looked at me like I was stark raving mad and told me to just use tap water like any sane person would. I had a quick google and can only see stuff coming up advising cooled boiled water for wiping newborns' faces. My baby is 5 months old for reference. I'm struggling to actually remember where I even got the idea that it had to be boiled and cooled from.

So go on then, should I be boiling it or am I lost in the realm of 'PFB' and FTM anxiety?! 😁

Bless you op ❤️

motogirl · 04/05/2022 19:10

Never heard of such a thing, I used tap water from newborn

marymaryquitecontrary820 · 04/05/2022 19:11

HAHA OP! Sorry that gave me a laugh 😊 leave that kettle alone unless it's for a Brew

bumpermom · 04/05/2022 19:13

Haha DC1 got cooled boiled water with cotton wool for the first few weeks, DC2 got put in a baby bath with normal tap water, DC3 got plonked into the bath with either me or DH. I remember the PFB days ...

TeddyTonks · 04/05/2022 19:15

😂😂😂😂

This has made my day.

PigletJohn · 04/05/2022 19:15

your hot tap water is actually pasteurised as well so doesn't need boiling

in some circumstances, cold tap water from a tank can be unhygenic, but ask about that on the Property section if you're interested.

TheKeatingFive · 04/05/2022 19:15

Omg 😂

just when I thought I'd read it all

BubblegumIceLollies · 04/05/2022 19:18

Honestly OP, you'll be laughing at yourself in a few years. I remember with my first panicking there was a boggie in my 3 weeks old nose and those weird things designed to get them out weren't working. Haha! Lots of us have been there.
5 months old certainly isn't a newborn, and even when they were, you could've used tap water!!

Christinatherabbit · 04/05/2022 19:22

No one does that haha (mum of 5 all survived)

OfstedOffred · 04/05/2022 19:23

Oh blimey pfb.

RitaFaircloughsWig · 04/05/2022 19:23

Give it a drink of tea with the boiled water.

ImprobablePuffin · 04/05/2022 19:24

OMG 😆 how's your leccy bill coming along with all those kettle boils?!

ImprobablePuffin · 04/05/2022 19:25

LemonDrizzleSlice · 04/05/2022 17:34

DD is fourteen, I still boil the kettle!

It's exhausting holding it up for her shower, mind.

😂 Brilliant

catandcoffee · 04/05/2022 19:25

😂 no need to boil the bath water. Have you been doing this for 5 months 😮

EekThreek · 04/05/2022 19:28

This is one of my new favourite MN PFB behaviour.

It's up there with squirting no tears shampoo in your eyes and sitting in the car park of A&E in case of allergic reactions while weaning.

Glad you're taking it in good humour. Enjoy the time you're saving!

badhappening · 04/05/2022 19:29

For safety reasons, you should always run cold water first and then add hot water.

If you do it the other way round and have a scolding bath you could potentially have a very nasty situation on your hands.

eurochick · 04/05/2022 19:32

Oh my...

Even my 3lb-something premmie had bog standard tap water for her first bath in scbu.

Babies give you enough to do, don't generate more work for yourself!

What? That's just totally unnecessary and you'll end up with it being too cold because you cant add enough hotel water without making the bath too deep. Then you're having to let water out and add more which is wasteful.

Honestly OP, just use tap water and run them together until you get the right temperature.

SoggyPaper · 04/05/2022 19:35

I’m amazed that you’ve been doing this for 5 months and no one has commented on it before.

you deserve a bonkers PFB award. You can use the additional time in not boiling and cooling bath water to polish it. 😁

poweredbyplants · 04/05/2022 19:35

Cool boiled water should be used for newborns before they have their first bath so I can see where you got misconstrued along the way but yes tap water is fine now. I regularly take my 5 month old swimming so he regularly gets pool water (both from chlorine and salt water pools) in his eyes and it's done him no harm. Don't worry we've all been there in some way or another doing something completely OTT with the PFB

Hertsgirl10 · 04/05/2022 19:35

Never ever heard of this I can’t believe Google says this?

mycatisannoying · 04/05/2022 19:36

Oh my God! I have never heard of anyone doing this in my life.

Cherrysherbet · 04/05/2022 19:37

Nope 😁. Sorry op, that’s a new one on me.

Awalkintime · 04/05/2022 19:38

The only time I've ever used cooled boiled water is for a drink.

TaVeryMuchLove · 04/05/2022 19:39

No. Babies must only be bathed in sun-warmed mountain spring water. It’s a right ball ache if you don’t live near a mountain, or the weather is shite.
