Deliveroo cost

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 01/05/2022 18:27

We hardly ever get take away. Mostly for health and kid fussiness reasons.

But just ordered £30 of pizza and paid £42 to Deliveroo.

A few years back everywhere did free delivery within a few miles.

So I don't get why Deliveroo appeals? They charge 5% on top of the food cost plus delivery and then a tip.

It was partly so high because I messed up and had to put 2 deliveries through. But before I would have just called the restaurant and amended the order (tried that but now they can't do it).

But AIBU to not get why Deliveroo has taken off? They charge a lot for a service that used to be free!

Deliveroo is in my shitlist along with Airbnb and Uber. These services that create a tech/app platform to connect business with customers, but refuse to take any customer service responsibility at either end. Absolutely dreadful companies, built by tech investors for tech investors with only scant lipservice paid to properly servicing a customer need.

Literally no one wins, except the investors in these businesses. Customers, riders, restaurant owners... everyone gets screwed over by Deliveroo (and UberEats).

PumpkinsandKittens · 01/05/2022 18:36

I don’t use uber eats for this reason, Was going to order on there and the place wanted delivery fee and then service change for £7 so that’s £7 on top of the food?! Deliveroo I have deliveroo plus as I signed up to a free promotion on amazon for a Years free delivery if I spend over £20 I think maybe £25.. uber eats delivery fee is ridiculous I stick to just eat now if under £20 which is usually free or 99p

ThePants999 · 01/05/2022 18:46

Restaurants hike their prices on Just Eat. You're still paying just as much as you do via the other services, it's just "hidden" in the food prices.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 01/05/2022 18:47

Uber & (less so) air bnb at least offer a big cost saving. In london at least compared to black cabs. I suppose compared to a local mini cab it might not be cheaper

You are bang on.

gogohm · 01/05/2022 18:53

The service fee is max £2.49 though? Delivery is mostly free here

Towcester · 01/05/2022 18:58

I suppose they offer food from different restaurants delivered via one order. Agree though and wonder if they will be around in 5 years. There share price has tanked recently too.

Jammysod · 01/05/2022 19:00

Customer service is generally shocking too...if food arrives cold, half of it missing, poor quality etc then the restaurant fobs you off to deliveroo/uber eats & they give you the generic 'we're sorry & will feedback' response.

We had a deliveroo driver steal our order last year, that was a farce.

MissAmbrosia · 01/05/2022 19:00

I'm abroad but we get money off offers nearly every week so delivery is free. If you mucked up your order that is hardly the fault of deliveroo. Why not call the pizza company directly? Most still have their own ability to deliver food.

Not where I am just looked at a Chinese restaurant I order from and the prices are the same on just eat and uber ests 🤷‍♀️

Heracles1000 · 01/05/2022 19:02

The USP was always that you could get a) smaller orders b) supermarket orders and c) multiple orders in one go

whatnumber · 01/05/2022 19:03

I don't get it either.
Loads of people round here use them.
I wad under the impression the restaurants charged more for the food through them too.
At least pizza stays hot. How on earth does a McD stay hot?

luxxlisbon · 01/05/2022 19:04

Well deliveroo usually facilitates delivery from places that don’t actually do deliveries themselves so it isn’t charging for something that used to be free.
I’ve never really seen delivery above about £3.50 is so really when you factor in driving costs there and back it would probably cost you the same to collect.
Your problem is you made 2 separate orders.

TrickorTreacle · 01/05/2022 19:05

Just use the restaurants' own apps / web sites. Pizza Hut, Dominoes etc have their own, and some of the indie places have them too.

If you have to use Deliveroo, Uber Eats or Just-Eat, then Just-Eat is the lesser of the 3 evils :-)

UnCivil · 01/05/2022 19:06

Just checked my favourite Chinese takeaway…more expensive on Just Eat.

ExtraordinaryBehaviour · 01/05/2022 19:08

Deliverroo prices from Co Op are definitely more expensive for anything convenient. But delivery for 99p plus tip is worth it imo when I'm in my pj's and run out of wine milk

Agree. I don't use them, or airbnb.

pizzaand · 01/05/2022 19:19

Our local Chinese is way more expensive on an app - if you call and pay cash on delivery you get free prawn crackers, a side, an extra main, and a 2ltr bottle of coke when you spend over 30, on the app, the prices are inflated plus del and service charge and no free stuff

DD7Superstar · 01/05/2022 19:24

I quite like that it brings lots of options into my awareness. I tend to order direct through the restaurants though but it made me aware of an incredible baked potato place and a Greek one.

Qwill · 01/05/2022 19:25

Delivery is free if you link to Amazon prime account.

LowlandLucky · 01/05/2022 19:34

Radical i know but have you ever thought of calling the takeaway that you want to use and placing your order ? Very last year but retro works.

Not the ones round here. I did call the pizza restaurant but they couldn't help.

That's what I mean, it's a worse service (ie can't amend an order in the kitchen) and costs lots more.

TinySaltLick · 01/05/2022 19:40

I think adding two delivery fees in your sums is a little disingenuous as that was your own error, however I do agree the fees are expensive - they have gradually crept up over the years

As mentioned if you have amazon prime you can get deliveroo plus for free, which bins one of the charges

I'm not defending deliveroo in terms of business practices, but I do disagree with the customer service points - whenever I have had missing, spilt or incorrect items, they have refunded me every time. I've had orders resent in full of there were enough issues (which is always the restaurant causing the problem, beyond food being cold/spilt)

To answer the original q - people use it because it is a superior ordering experience. Reviewed restaurants, all options in one place, ability to track rider, accurate delivery time estimates, a consistent ordering experience, not needing paper leaflets or online searches, records of previous orders etc - can't really argue that it is overall an improvement. However the costs are clearly inflated and the treatment of riders appears pool despite recent progress re employees versus gig workers.

For a £7.50 pizza I paid £11

Next time I'll walk to a closer place and pick up. Should have done that all along. I don't begrudge paying 10% tip to the delivery guy but nearly 50% across service charge, delivery and tip is crazy.
