Deliveroo cost

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 01/05/2022 18:27

We hardly ever get take away. Mostly for health and kid fussiness reasons.

But just ordered £30 of pizza and paid £42 to Deliveroo.

A few years back everywhere did free delivery within a few miles.

So I don't get why Deliveroo appeals? They charge 5% on top of the food cost plus delivery and then a tip.

It was partly so high because I messed up and had to put 2 deliveries through. But before I would have just called the restaurant and amended the order (tried that but now they can't do it).

But AIBU to not get why Deliveroo has taken off? They charge a lot for a service that used to be free!

Not the ones round here. I did call the pizza restaurant but they couldn't help.

That's what I mean, it's a worse service (ie can't amend an order in the kitchen) and costs lots more.

You can amend orders - you speak to deliveroo customer services and they contact the restaurant.

It is of course slightly painful given how kitchens work as the ticket would already be being processed by the kitchen, there isn't much they can do to help in an automated way - someone has to manually go and change the piece of paper the chef is working on, but yes agree there is an additional party at this point to revise the billing etc

LowlandLucky · 01/05/2022 19:34

Radical i know but have you ever thought of calling the takeaway that you want to use and placing your order ? Very last year but retro works.

Round here they've all switched to Deliveroo. That's my gripe.

@TinySaltLick the app said they couldn't help so I should call the restaurant. The restaurant said they could only do it through the app.

For a £7.50 pizza I paid £11

Next time I'll walk to a closer place and pick up. Should have done that all along. I don't begrudge paying 10% tip to the delivery guy but nearly 50% across service charge, delivery and tip is crazy.

I'm not trying to be some defender of deliveroo here I promise - purely just trying to be balanced in the criticism - however in this example did you order only a single pizza at 7.50? How much do you think it costs for a person to package it up and bike it out to you? The economics probably don't work if everyone is ordering single items in this way - what if it took one person thirty mins for the round trip? You have to cover the wages somehow

Pizza is always better value if you pick up

Ah OK, that's a pain. If you call deliveroo they usually sort it on the spot in my experience - unless this is a change to an item eg cook it differently - otherwise deliveroo themselves would need to manage this to charge for or refund an item (assuming required in this example)

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 01/05/2022 19:54

@TinySaltLick I think I'm just being grumpy about the state of the modern world.

If I ever have to use it again and mess up my order I'll try calling them.

I actually have my prime account linked so didn't pay service on my original order (did on the smaller ones though).

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 01/05/2022 19:57

@TinySaltLick I get that one pizza is a pain to deliver but that's why it's crazy they didn't even have the human sense (even after I called them) to send two orders together instead of separating them!

Will have a glass of wine and get a life before I sound like a crazed obsessive!

It does seem steep

Heracles1000 · 01/05/2022 22:13

Was it a takeaway pizza place? Or a restaurant chain? I definitely see price differences between "Domino's lookalike/ standard pizza chain" and prezzos in my area.

It was a local restaurant. Possibly a small chain but a restaurant.

I know people who would pay £££ if it meant not having to interact with a human 🤷🏻‍♀️

But specific to Deliveroo - I work in a supermarket that partners with them and I would say a good 90% of orders have either fags or booze in them (or both) so it’s people shopping for essentials 😁

EasterIssland · 01/05/2022 23:14

I used to order a pizza from papa johns which was £14.99. Now it’s 16.99 instead and 3£ for delivery. Haven’t ordered since.

mcdonalds through Uber eats was less than £5 my order. Now it’s around £12 because all the fees they add. Again I don’t order anymore.

hepaticanobilis · 01/05/2022 23:19

One of the reasons I like them is access to restaurants that don't otherwise deliver. I don't drive so it means I can occasionally order from a small bakery or an interesting restaurant.

The fees seem to have gone up recently on all the apps though along with everything else. Even Dominos now charges for delivery when ordering direct, it always used to be free.

Yeah restaurants are always quite expensive on deliveroo.

Redwinemaestro · 02/05/2022 07:32

I love Deliveroo and miss it since we moved to a countryside town where they don't offer their services. I have had issues with food orders in the past but that's caused by the restaurant and not Deliveroo. Deliveroo have always sorted it on the spot and provided a refund, either full or partial, depending on the nature of the problem. I'm happy to pay a delivery charge as well as a tip. It's better than me driving across the city to collect, getting stuck in traffic, finding a parking space, etc.

I have used Airbnb too, mainly when I work away from home. A room in a house for £20-£25 per night is cheaper than a budget hotel room from £40 upwards. There are reviews based on which a decent place can be selected. I used it on holiday in Cornwall too and it was fantastic. A whole cottage at a cheaper price than most hotel rooms in holiday season.

But it isn’t a flat rate so it’s pointless to compare it to the pizza, you aren’t paying 50% on every order for service. You messed up so knowingly put in a separate order with a separate delivery charge. If you hadn’t have done that you would have just paid one £3.50 for delivery for a £30/£40/whatever order and then you wouldn’t have had anything to post about, so it isn’t quite deliveroo but you making 2 orders.
The cost to deliver to you in terms of a driver is the same whether your pizza is £7 or £70.

Pottedpalm · 02/05/2022 07:45

You still used it, despite the cost. You know it’s not obligatory?
Have never had food delivered to the house, we use a few places within driving distance.

Maybebabyno2 · 02/05/2022 07:48

I think the costs are really high whe ordering through an app. I called a local chip shop to ask what one of the items on their menu was and said I was about to place an order on just eat. They told me to use their own ordering system (found via facebook) as it was free delivery and 20% cheaper food costs. Now I always check when ordering food to see if they have their own ordering system.

OldTinHat · 02/05/2022 07:51

This gets my goat too! The prices on the app are more expensive first of all (when comparing between apps and the actual take away price). Then delivery which is up to £3.49 and service charge.

Yes, they're convenient but bring back the Just Eat days when it was so much cheaper!

You are right but the issue is that before, you could just call the restaurant and change the order. You can't always do that now, and the app can't always help either. It's irritating that you can't just call the restaurant and add something to your order, they would still only need to send one delivery driver, it makes no sense!

CottonSock · 02/05/2022 07:53

I would only use deliveroo for a treat delivery from a restaurant that only uses deliveroo. Pizza I dont use it..

TinySaltLick · 02/05/2022 07:55

After this thread inspired me last night I ordered from deliveroo - I have amazon prime so have deliveroo plus for free (obviously accepting a prime subscription has subsidised this to a degree)

Order cost £29
Delivery fee £0
Service fee 99p

Then tip on top of that - so about 3% before tip

CottonSock · 02/05/2022 07:58

Deliveroo is free with prime?????? I did not know this

This isn't true - if you call deliveroo they contact the restaurant and make the change (assuming it is reasonably soon after the first order and hadn't already been packaged up)

I do agree the process does struggle a bit if there is a delay and you want to add something due to the way it allocates a rider, as effectively the bike person would have to sit there whilst the reauarant cooked another pizza separately

How often does this really happen though? Surely 99% of the time people are able to look at the list of ordered items and validate they hsvrnt forgotten a dish?

But what would the order have cost if you had gone in for it?

We've got a takeaway and we use UberEats. The people who order from UberEats pay a third more for each item on the menu as well as the delivery charge.

Approximately 40% of our orders are from UberEats. People want the convenience of the app (even though we have our own app) and there always seem to be offers.

We did a trial with Uber Eats, our profits went up. We didn't continue after the trial. Profits down. So we felt boxed in really.
