AIBU to think this is suspicious or am I being paranoid

Me and DH both have a house key, we then have two family members locally who have spares.

This morning I went out with both DC, leaving DH to take the dog for a walk (she’s very young and was hyper!). I took my key in case he was out when we got back.

When we got back I noticed that DH’s key wasn’t in the key pot (don’t think it had been when I went out either). I asked him where was his key and he said he had accidentally left it in his car yesterday, didn’t think much of it.

I later thought to ask him which key he used to lock up when he took the dog out in the morning, he said he used the spare. I said I didn’t know there was a spare and could he show me where it is, he tried to distract me away from the topic. So I started looking through the key cupboard and trying all the unlabelled keys, explaining that I just wanted to make sure we knew where all the keys were. He became definitely shirty at this point, and I asked him to show me which key he used to lock up - none of them fit the lock.

At this point he became quite defensive, asked why I was being paranoid and what I was suspicious had been going on. I said I wasn’t sure but had a sense I was being lied to and felt uncomfortable about it. He said it was a small detail and didn’t matter, it was that small that he couldn’t even remember what key he used to lock up and that I was being ridiculous and should leave it.

We left the conversation there and he’s now in a grump with me. I just feel uneasy about it but not sure why or what I’m concerned he has done. I’m fairly sure he took the dog out as she was much calmer and seemed tired when I got back.

AIBU?

Are they your family members who live near or his ?

YANBU to be uncomfortable about being lied to.

Ignore the handmaidens here who will be over backwards to make it your fault, somehow.

Honesty is the minimum we should expect in a relationship. Has he got a key now? How is he getting in and out of the house?

This!

He's clearly lying and there's no need for it. You're suspicious only because he's acting suspiciously!! Why not just be honest.

Blarting, it is not necessary to quote the OP in full prior to responding. If everyone did that threads would be completely unreadable.

It's not necessary for you to police threads! It's really not required and if MN thought it was a issue, they'd disable the function.

Or have they made you the MN police? 👮‍♀️

And this is your only response to the thread? Move on...

Well what i get from this is he went out walking the dog but didnt lock the door as he had left his key in the car and when you asked him about how he locked the door he made up about a spare key as he prob thought youd have a go at him for leaving the door unlocked!

Sounds very feasible.

BritWifeInUSA · 30/04/2022 18:36

Do you have another door that you can get in and out of? Back door, patio door, etc? Maybe he went that way to take the dog and didn’t want to tell you because he thought you’d give him the Spanish Inquisition.

i don’t think his key is in the car. Who has a loose house key in the car? If he drove there surely it’s on the bunch with the car keys. I think he’s lost the key and doesn’t want to admit it.

I quite often have my loose house key in the car. I don't need it again until I get back out of the car at home so I might as well leave it in there rather than have it in my bag or pocket while I'm out.

PlasticineMeg · 30/04/2022 20:35

He either
A. Didn’t walk the dog or
B. Did walk the dog and left the door unlocked

probably thought he got away with it until you raised it and then told a porkie that became prolonged rather than telling the truth.

PlasticineMeg · 30/04/2022 20:37

Sorry forgot to say he’s lost the key which is why he did either A or B above

sweeneytoddsrazor · 30/04/2022 20:39

I wouldn't even think to question my DH as to the whereabouts of his key if it wasn't in the usual place. I would just assume he had it in his pocket or something.

Favourodds · 30/04/2022 20:41

Extraordinary behaviour.

RoyKentsChestHair · 30/04/2022 20:43

This would piss me off too OP. Might be why I’m not with my Xp anymore though! A cavalier attitude to security makes me angry - leaving a house key in the car is stupid - my car has been broken into outside my house twice. If there had been a house key in there I’d have been burgled too. He needs to fess up if he’s lost it so that you can change the locks. Dick head. Defensiveness and petty lying are pathetic.

Topgub · 30/04/2022 20:44

He didn't lock the door.

I dont understand why you made such a big deal

If you're normally like this thsts probably why he lied

Nillynally · 30/04/2022 20:46

He cba to walk the dog so didn't and said he did

ReadyToMoveIt · 30/04/2022 20:48

What do you think happened OP?

SquirrelG · 30/04/2022 20:56

I agree that he probably left the door unlocked, but honestly you are too fixated on this. It's hardly crime of the century. I really can't understand people who make such a big deal out of nothing.

Same. I just haven’t got the energy to care about stuff like this.

Letterasaurus · 30/04/2022 20:58

OP, do you and your DH usually keep both your keys in this key pot you mention?

I would be nonplussed if my DH referred to a non-existent spare key...

That’s properly made me lol thank you for this comment

DressingGownofDoom · 30/04/2022 21:03

yeah he didn't lock the door and didn't tell you because he knew you'd make a fuss about it. He's probably misplaced his key and doesn't want to say because you'll start turning the house upside down and ringing locksmiths etc and it'll end up being in his jeans pocket or something.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 30/04/2022 21:09

What a lot of key angst

I'm with everyone else, he most likely left the door unlocked, no big deal.

Lol was literally about the quote and say the same thing. Hilarious 😂

*TO quote

runnerblade95 · 30/04/2022 21:20

As for OP, yeah, you sound highly strung to be honest. If you are always like this then I can’t really blame him lying.

As a pp said, he either didn’t take the dog for a walk, or he did but left the door unlocked.

CherrySocks · 30/04/2022 21:28

He's lost the key

Onthedunes · 30/04/2022 21:31

Not knowing the situation or the people involved the only scenarios are :

1 He didn't take the dog out, but wore her out in the garden.

2 He went out but did not lock the door.

3 He invited a family member round (who has a spare key) and went on a dog walk with them and they locked and unlocked the door, then left.

Is there a problem with any of these ?
