AIBU to be a bit peed off about the new all inclusive drinking rule in Spain?

Don’t want to come across a raging alcoholic but we’ve booked an all inclusive holiday (costing about £7.5k) for me DH and 4 DC and am peed off to see you can now only have 3 alcoholic drinks with lunch and three with dinner. I know six seems a lot but it’s more about being told when you can have them and how many you can have at a given time. We’ve been to this place before (Majorca) and used to enjoy lazy afternoons sipping a beer or three by the pool. Doesn’t seem like ‘all inclusive’ anymore and we’re paying thousands for the bloody thing!

I've read this today as well and can only sympathize really , but it's the ones who go mad who have spoilt it for people and it's not always just the ' brits' either , other nationalities also like to have more than six drinks too I'm sure.
Is it definitely going to be a rule at your resort ?

travailtotravel · 29/04/2022 16:21

Is this a government thing, or a holiday provider thing?

WoodenClock · 29/04/2022 16:21

Is it a Spanish rule or something introduced by the company?

I agree, on holiday, 6 drinks throughout a lazy day isn't a lot and 3 with dinner isn't many.

If it's cost savings, after you've paid that's outrageous. If it's something the Spanish have felt the need to introduce, it's a bit embarrassing!

edwinbear · 29/04/2022 16:21

I saw an article in the Daily Fail about this - I'd be cross too. If we're on AI it's not at all unusual for us to have a couple of beers at lunch, a couple more round the pool in the afternoon, a drink before dinner, couple of glasses of wine with dinner and maybe a cocktail afterwards. The whole point of AI is that you can have what you want, when you want it and not be having to constantly monitor what you've had and if you can have anything else.

WeCouldBeSpearows · 29/04/2022 16:22

Is it a Spanish rule or something introduced by the company?

It's a Balearic government rule, so doesn't affect the whole of Spain.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/04/2022 16:22

So you're only allowed 6 in total all day? Only allowed alcoholic drinks with meals?

Well that's annoying. I'm going in half term with DS and I like a cocktail by the pool.

ErickBroch · 29/04/2022 16:23

There is no point in doing all inclusive if that's the rule, cheaper to buy drinks separately.

SillySallySassySausage · 29/04/2022 16:23

People will go elsewhere 🤷🏽‍♀️

Whammyyammy · 29/04/2022 16:23

I'd be amazed if I could drink 6 drinks. If it helps prevent boozed up stereotypical brits... Great idea

QuiltedHippo · 29/04/2022 16:23

Can you go to a different bar on the resort or is it limited to 3 in a certain time period?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/04/2022 16:24

Just found the article and it only mentions Majorca and Ibiza, I'm not going to either of those so hopefully it will be ok!

1FootInTheRave · 29/04/2022 16:25

I don't drink through the day at all but yanbu imo.

Not what you paid for.

MayorDusty · 29/04/2022 16:25

I wonder if they will still sell alcohol after you've had the included ones. Like they do with premium brands etc.
If so it negates any benefit surely?

worraliberty · 29/04/2022 16:26

Any all inclusive holiday I've been on, the drinks have probably contained less alcohol than a mouthwash anyway, despite the fact they tend to taste really strong 😧

I genuinely don't think I could get drunk even if I drank their drinks all day.

the80sweregreat · 29/04/2022 16:26

How will they police it though ?
Big groups of people together will find a way of getting round it , some hotels have the pumps outside , will they close them off and on again ?
How would staff remember who had what to drink ? Or maybe a key fob thing might be introduced, you can only swipe it six times ?
The bigger hotels will struggle to keep it it, but not sure what the thinking is or how it'll work

Bookworm20 · 29/04/2022 16:26

Is this all resorts in spain? We're going AI for the very reason of not having to worry when we're there about spending money. We are not raging alcoholics either, but I was looking forward to a few cocktails around the pool and a few glasses of wine with dinner and relaxing with a gin (or 2) later in the evening. I'll be really pissed off if this is policed like that.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/04/2022 16:26

So you couldn't drink 6 drinks. Many other people can, and still behave themselves. We aren't all the same.

Malariahilaria · 29/04/2022 16:26

Oh this would really annoy me. We've done Neilsons before where the drinks weren't included and had to monitor and faff about going to the local town to get a taxi load of wine and beer for the apartments tiny fridge, then got a bill at the end that wasn't pleasant. We then swapped to AI in menorca and had such a relaxed holiday with full AI.

Not so much day drinking but a couple of cocktails pre dinner, wine with dinner and maybe some after. We couldn't stay up too late due to kids but we'd go back to the room and sit on the balcony with a bottle of wine or something. The idea that I'd now have monitor this to 3 drinks would have me demanding a serious discount!!!

Myhamsteratemyjammydoger · 29/04/2022 16:27

So rather than leaving it to the OP to drip feed. The Balearic Islands government announced new laws in 2020, a regional in a bid to clamp down on public drunkenness and clean up the image of resorts, that have have been affected recently by uncivil behaviour, most of this type of behaviour is directly related to alcohol abuse in certain tourist areas of Majorca and Ibiza.

This is an attempt to promote the destination, to provide it with better quality through both public and private sector investments, and position it in an increasingly competitive and global market.

I suggest you should have done your own research before traveling over again.

Bookworm20 · 29/04/2022 16:28

Only thing our hotel says is only 2 drinks per person at a time. Which is fine, as only 2 of us going so thats all we'd be ordering. But as AI I would take that as being able to have as many as you like over the course of the day. Thats the point of AI isn't it?

the80sweregreat · 29/04/2022 16:28

That'll be it , once you've had your 'allowance , ' the drinks will have to be paid for and then the branded drinks will appear !
Will they reduce the prices of the holidays ?
They should

Myhamsteratemyjammydoger · 29/04/2022 16:29

"The Balearic Islands have brought in new laws which limit the number of free drinks on all-inclusive meal options, and various restrictions on the purchase of alcohol.
The legislation says people on all-inclusive meal options can only have six drinks per day - three at lunch, and three at dinner.
It also bans:
Happy hours;
Pub crawls;
Two-for-one-drink offers;
Sale of alcohol in shops between 9.30pm and 8am;
Advertising party boats in designated areas. "

WeCouldBeSpearows · 29/04/2022 16:29

Is this all resorts in spain?

No, just the Balearic Islands

2Rebecca · 29/04/2022 16:29

I think it's a good thing. AI encourages excess drinking just because it is free

WeCouldBeSpearows · 29/04/2022 16:29

It says Majorca and Ibiza in the articles. I'm going to Menorca which isn't mentioned?
