Does she have a boyfriend?

I'm not sure if I'm being unreasonable here but this has happened to me twice now in the past month and I just can't get my head around it.

DD is 4. A few weeks ago at the supermarket an elderly lady stopped DD to compliment her hair clip. She then asked DD if she had a boyfriend. I was pretty confused as to why she would think it's acceptable to ask a 4yo this so I said no and walked away. I discussed it with DH when we got home and he agreed it was weird.

Today at a local group the same thing happened. An elderly lady complimented DD's outfit and then asked her if she had a boyfriend. I was pretty miffed as I felt it was inappropriate so I replied, no she doesn't, she's 4 and she doesn't even know what a boyfriend is yet. She has friends that's boys and friends that's girls and that's it.

Am I out of the loop thinking this kind of question is inappropriate for a 4yo? I'm honestly baffled by it.

YANBU. It is strange.

FWIW my parents and aunts are all around 80 and none of them would think this normal.

@PlasticineMeg I'm finding your rude, aggressive and personal attacks amusing. Also your scenarios that are absolutely nothing like mine so no comparison.

But please do continue to embarrass yourself. It shows exactly the type of person you are.

I'm very please that my daughter will be raised by a "snowflake" and as a result learn appropriate boundaries and self respect instead of being a people pleaser and allowing random to speak to her as they please because that's how they've always acted. The mind boggles.

I don't think it has anything to do with age. I have a friend in her late 30s who has been obsessed with her DD being my DS's girlfriend since the were born 9 years ago. Drives me up the bloody wall I don't see her much anymore as she started making 'joke' comments about DS being a cheat as he has another girlfriend. Bonkers!

YANBU OP. I hate it.

My MIL used to be so annoying asking that. It pissed me off no end.

It is a weird thing to say to a child.

It's just good natured teasing.

YANBU- it’s a fucking weird thing to say.

I think the best thing to do is say “No, she’s four” like you genuinely think they’re mistaken about her age.
