My house is 19 degrees today and I’m freezing!

I’m guessing I’m freezing as we’ve had some nice warm weather and I’ve got used to being warm but I’m so cold today. Dreading the winter when it will be colder and can’t have the heating on as much!

OP posts:

It always feels much colder to me in the spring and autumn when I no longer turn the heating on even at the same temperature - so 18C and no heating feels colder than 18C with heating on in the winter. I'm not sure why that is because 18C indoors should always feel the same (it's not like it's windy or something so could feel different like outdoor temperatures that have a "real" and "feels like" temperature range). Probably something to do with how dry or damp the air is as well?

Anyway, the heating is firmly off here too and it feels really cold. Looking forward to warmer days soon!

When I bought my previous house (new build) the advice given in the thermostat manufacture's instruction booklet was to set the thermostat at 'a comfortable 21.5 degrees'.

This was for a new thermostat for a new boiler in a very well insulated house.

Clearly the thermostat manufacture doesn't think 21.5 is a ridiculously high temperature.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/04/2022 17:57

You should be grateful to us who’ve acclimatised (often through necessity) and manage to keep our heating off as much as possible. If it wasn’t for us there would be less fossil fuel left for you richer and less resilient types to waste

How have you got time to type shite like this when you’re obviously too busy polishing your halo? Talk about smug, Hope all those disabled people who need heat and electricity to live ( like dialysis) get their heat turned off pronto so they can ‘acclimatise’

Are you poorly? We haven’t had the heating on for a month, in fact we have the windows open!

Bully for you. It was 4 degrees round me at 9.00 am this morning. No doubt you would have had your windows open during that. Only weaklings need heat after all eh?

I'm trying to get used to it being colder now. If I get used to a house at 18 now, then yes, I'll obviously need the heating on in winter but to heat up to 18 not 20 for example.
I've heard somewhere dropping the thermostat 1 degree saves 10% so worth tolerating colder.

As PPs have said 19 isn't cold. You might feel a bit colder than you'd like or are used to.
And I understand some people won't be able to have the heating on at all. That's terrible obviously.

This is what we did. Had always set it to 17, but then this year we dropped it by one degree in January then again in February and 15 feels the same as 17 did now. Gas usage dropped quite a bit so I'm hoping this way we can afford to run the heating a few hours a day through next winter.

See? Go on, tell us, it's 8 degrees tops in your house over winter isn't it?

zighead · 28/04/2022 19:01

Not had the heating on for the last three weeks but have given in tonight as the house is freezing, just 14 degrees on the thermostat. Feels much better after a quick half hour blast.

I'm sure I only noticed one poster, on a previous very long heating thread who had their house at single digits by choice.

No we have the heating set to 17. Feeling cold when it’s 19 is not normal, hence why I wondered if OP might be unwell.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/04/2022 19:25

Feeling cold when it’s 18 is very normal. I’m cold unless it’s above 22 degrees.

Vaillant website suggest 20 degrees and higher for various rooms. I’ve had to attach 2 photos.

so all the time then?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/04/2022 19:31

Basic level of warmth for a well dressed person is 28 fegrrrs according to WHO. That’s the base level. Not the max, but the minimum.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/04/2022 19:32

Arrrgh 18 degrees.

Abraxan · 28/04/2022 19:32

OfstedOffred · 27/04/2022 18:12

No one will die at 19 degrees.

I usually realise in a cold snap at this time of year that I'm not wearing enough and need to layer back up.

I was cold first thing but added slippers and a jumper then was fine

No, I won't die from being cold at that temperature but I'm not comfortable.
I'm happy to put a jumper on or have a blanket but, unless I really need to, I don't want to be bundled up in tons of layers to sit in my living room.

I also have arthritis and the cold makes a big difference to my pain levels. If I get too cold joints hurt. Putting on a layer doesn't really help with that much either.

I like the house to be about 22c ideally, maybe a bit cooler overnight.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/04/2022 19:43

@Abraxan

I agree. If l put a jumper on, then just my upper body stays warm, but my legs, hands and feet stay cold. So am l supposed to put gloves on in my house?

I might as well sit outside.

Feeling cold when it's 19 is not normal,

Says who?

As I said in my pp the manufactures of the thermostat in my previous house recommending setting it at 21.5.

I imagine they probably know what they're talking about and they clearly think it's perfectly normal to be cold at 19 degrees.

I would never set my thermostat as low as 19 degrees as it would barely warm the radiators and I would be extremely cold.

And no I don't sit around in shorts and a T-shirt. I'm dressed warmly with jumpers and warm socks.

orangetriangle · 28/04/2022 20:21

my thermostat is set to 21 just put it down from 22 now we are 3and of April and is set to come on in the morning if it goes below 21 for a couple of hours and same in evening if it goes below 21. My house is too cold if it goes to 19 on thermostat then I override the timer and manually put it on and yes I have thermal top on and warm jumper and woolly socks

Phrenologistsfinger · 28/04/2022 20:24

Our house is always 19c maybe 20c if it’s really cold outside so YABU. I also have an under active thyroid and aching joints so I am one to feel the cold. Everyone needs to cut back regardless.

tillytoodles1 · 28/04/2022 20:26

I live in sheltered accommodation and the gas bill is less than 10.00 a week for heating 24/7 including hot water and showers. It's ridiculous as everyone here could afford to pay more.

GiraffesInScarfs · 28/04/2022 22:07

These threads are so frustrating.

Why is it so hard for some people to comprehend that some people find anything below 22/21 degrees very uncomfortable even when wearing lots of jumpers.

Just like some people are fine in 35 degrees and others find it uncomfortably hot at even 25, which is an early spring day in many countries.

People have different temperature tolerances for a whole host of reasons including sex, age, circulation, genetics, build, sensory issues etc etc.

Instead of trying to tell people who are shivering to suck it up, try understanding that just because you're comfortable at 15 degrees others aren't? Surely not that hard.

Ah yes, so true.

But what you forget GiraffesInScarfs is, that on MN, there are a whole load of people who have enormous difficulty comprehending that anyone could possibly have a different opinion or different needs from them.

It's very odd.

BlimBosh · 28/04/2022 23:30

Think I'm pretty lucky, I'm always warm. Only had the heating on twice this winter - took the duvet off the bed a few weeks ago (just use the duvet cover).. and sat outside to eat dinner last night wearing a short sleeve top.

Yet my dad is dressed in a jumper and dressings gown, under a duvet and blanket with a hot water bottle and heat pad - with the heating on.

We are all so very different.

Are you quite alright? You seem VERY defensive. Or maybe all that heat has gone to your head. Maybe try opening a window a crack?

milkyaqua · 29/04/2022 02:01

God forbid anyone should ever be at all uncomfortable.

I very much doubt people complaining here are in fact "wearing lots of jumpers".

I don't think you can compare thermostat temperatures without knowing size and plan of house. 19 degrees might be nice and warm in a smallish house. BT at last visit advised we set our temp to 23-23.5 degrees if we wanted to feel any warmth. I think most average sized homes will require 22 degrees to warm up.
The temp has really dropped today, and my nose is freezing cold, my chest is also starting to constrict a little, a reaction I get when breathing air that is really cold. Checked the temp and it's 22 degrees! I've ramped it up by half a degree and my breathing has started to feel much easier already.

Genuinely, how do you think this makes sense?

A cube of air at 19 degrees is 19 degrees no matter the size of the cube? Do you mean big houses are draftier so feel colder at the same temperature?

I'm not trying to be difficult I just genuinely don't understand why a large house would need to be warmer than a small house. I could understand an old house Vs a new house but not big Vs small.
