My house is 19 degrees today and I’m freezing!

I’m guessing I’m freezing as we’ve had some nice warm weather and I’ve got used to being warm but I’m so cold today. Dreading the winter when it will be colder and can’t have the heating on as much!

The great MN race to the bottom.

I wondered how long it would take for someone to spout this old platitude. 😴

Horst · 27/04/2022 19:46

It definitely depends on the house. Our old house 22 could feel chilly. The new house 18.5 for most of the day it’s perfectly fine. I’m in leggings and a hoody not because it’s cold but because I’ve got my comfy after work clothes on.

SouperNoodle · 27/04/2022 19:54

Our house is 17 degrees and it's quite cool but comfortable. We all run too hot so when we have our heating on, we only heat it to 19 degrees. Anything more and we're sweating 😂

Am always shocked at these threads, at how cold peoples houses are!!!! 17?! In winter?! It’s so chilly! Even WHO recommends 19, more for children and old people.
We have thermo on 20 daytime (21 in winter) and 18 night.

If my heating was on higher than 19, I'd get a headache!

We have ours set to around 17-18 degrees in winter and use blankets and layers to stay warm. We can afford to have it on higher but I feel unwell if we do - I go into other people's homes for work and I am always so shocked at how hot they are!

Everyone's different I guess. I moved from a warmer climate but where the house could get down to single digits inside midwinter. It was impossible to heat the space, only the people.

When I moved to the UK, 17 was what I found most comfortable to have the heating at and my child feels the cold less than me. I turned it down this year because of the cost and now 15 feels the same as 17 did.

To sleep I like a cold room and a warm bed.

tealandteal · 27/04/2022 19:56

I think this definitely depends on the house, ours is around 10 years old, the thermostat is set at 16 and the heating hasn’t come on today. I have been wearing jeans, t shirt and a jumper, not cold.

User0ne · 27/04/2022 20:01

It's what you get used to. Turn the thermostat down half a degree a month, invest in some wool clothing and tough it out.

We have an old house (stove heated) and even with it running 24hrs a day it rarely gets above 15 in winter unless you are next to the stove. It's been off for 3 weeks now and was 12 when we got up this morning.

I'd love to put it back on but we're saving for next winter. But 15 is fine with plenty of wool and slippers

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 27/04/2022 20:01

Bloody hell, our house is 14 degrees. We are freezing. But I can't face turning on the heating knowing how much it costs 😫

Springandsummerarecoming · 27/04/2022 20:02

SofiaSoFar · 27/04/2022 18:18

Exactly.

Unbelievable that so many people think they're suffering some sort of human rights atrocity because it's not 20+ degrees in their house.

There's a fuel cost crisis and a climate emergency but woe betide anyone suggesting putting a sweater on.

🙄

How funny you are! I have a jumper on but I’m still cold. If you read my post again I am a tad confused why I’m cold and wondering if it’s because it’s been so warm lately that 19 degrees feels colder than it is. That’s what I was implying anyway.

19C? Luxury!

We used to live in this tiny old house, with great big holes in the roof.

GC- House? You were lucky to have a HOUSE! We used to live in one room, all hundred and twenty-six of us, no furniture. Half the floor was missing; we were all huddled together in one corner for fear of FALLING!
TJ: You were lucky to have a ROOM! We used to have to live in a corridor!
MP: Ohhhh we used to DREAM of living in a corridor! Woulda' been a palace to us. We used to live in an old water tank on a rubbish tip. We got woken up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us! House!? Hmph.
EI: Well when I say 'house' it was only a hole in the ground covered by a piece of tarpaulin, but it was a house to US.

And FWIW I have 4 layers on including merino & a fleece, a blanket over my knees and have had to plug in the electric heater as I live in a block of flats with communal heating for the radiators which has been turned off until October. Nose and hands still cold, pondering finding my gloves.

Our house has just, now the days over and I've finished cooking, reached the balmy heights of 14 degrees!

Difference between now and winter is its not damp and the temperatures outside are generally warmer, so it's "manageable" with jumpers, blankets, socks and hot water bottles! (And gloves for when I'm typing for work!)

Crikey 19 degrees I'd be able to consider wearing single layers!

Badger1970 · 27/04/2022 20:06

Our thermostat is in the hallway, which is large and drafty with a stone floor. It says 19c tonight but honestly the house feels way colder.

I planned a long dog walk after work but almost ran back home after 20 minutes, the wind was absolutely bitter.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 27/04/2022 20:07

I’m sat here in cropped leggings and a gym vest top. Starting to think I might put a jumper on but I’ll probably just go for my long sleeve pjs. My thermostat says 18.7. I’m usually cold so it’s a bit unusual I’m okay… maybe I’m ill

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 27/04/2022 20:09

I'm glad I'm not going mad. Our thermo is now fixed at 18 degrees max and I was freezing today, OH was saying it was perfectly fine and quoting "Ner cast a clout til May is out" which is utterly annoying. I'm wrapped up to the nines and I've just spotted he currently has the back door wide open. Grrr or rather Brrr

roundtable · 27/04/2022 20:10

16 in my house I am frozen and have lots of layers on.

Not putting the heating on but I'm about to run a bath which is probably comparable. Then into bed with more layers. We've been in bed by 9 every night recently as the house feels so cold.

Winter is going to be awful.

Cyberpixie · 27/04/2022 20:19

I put my a/c on today because it was 21c indoors. South facing.
I'm in a t-shirt as well. I'd melt with heating on in the 20's.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 27/04/2022 20:19

PS At the beginning of winter I bought a couple of zipped wearable blanket type things from Amazon. They have got me through winter, but I was hoping to retire them in April and wear normal human clothes (they make me look like a tellytubby). Unfortunately ive had to wear them recently. Fingers crossed for May.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/04/2022 20:20

Unbelievable that so many people think they're suffering some sort of human rights atrocity because it's not 20+ degrees in their house

Unbelievable that someone hasn’t recognised that proper heating is essential, and just because they can cope with the cold doesn’t mean everyone can

Unbelievable that other countries have dealt with this better, and no one dies of cold in other countries

Unbelievable that this country have done nothing to mitigate the impact the on it’s citizens.

whatsthestory123 · 27/04/2022 20:39

agree its be chilly today

im still on a fixed tarrif till August this year but have been getting used to a cooler house and i did put the heating on for an hr and now have the real fire going which i have had on nightly for weeks

dreading next winter but got a good price deal on a pallet of coal, just looked and its now double what i paid so the real fire will be used alot come autumn

ive no idea how any will manage this winter

Scottishflower65 · 27/04/2022 20:46

One good thing about the menopause is feeling hotter. Out in garden in shorts and t shirt this week at 16 degrees.

ButtockUp · 27/04/2022 20:51

I wanted to quote the person who mentioned this being a race to the bottom but can't , for some reason.
Anyway, it's a daft thing to say.

If you live in a detached house, you'll lose heat a lot quicker than if you're in a semi or a flat.
My mum's in a flat and only puts her heating on if it gets very cold. She has residual heating from above, below and from the side.
Terraces and semis get some residual heat from neighbours.

Rootes · 27/04/2022 20:52

Didn't realise room temperature ideally as low as possible was a virtue until this thread Grin, funny MN.

Aconitum · 27/04/2022 20:54

We are having some very chilly north and north easterly winds atm which is making it feel chilly. You will feel much better when the wind changes direction😃

Same here! It's been so nice and now it's 13C outside.

We've got one room in a generally cool house that stays warmer, and gets the evening sun - so we just all go in there under a blanket!

It's incredible how cosy those fleece blankets are - I've got one over my knees at the mo, plus a big jumper and a scarf! I'm cosy now (and it's nearly May 😆)

OP I'm confused...if your house is 19 degrees isn't that an acceptable temperature? We never have our thermostat set above 19 degrees.

It's fine if your active, up and down stairs, cleaning, cooking, etc...

I WFH quite a bit, and rapidly get really chilled off sitting still at that temperature.
