To burn down my house?

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 26/04/2022 08:34

I have been getting insect bites for over a month now. I had a patch of about five then a break for 3 weeks and now over the last few days I have got about 15.
they are intensely itchy for about 3/4 days. Swell up huge. Mostly on my feet and legs. So last night I sprayed myself with bug spray on my legs and feet. Woke up this morning to six bites across my back where the fucker has clearly walked across snacking on me.
joking aside the itching and burning is driving me to feel really beside myself. I haven’t slept properly for about 4 nights now because of the itching.
we have checked for bed bugs - DEFINITELY no sign of these
can’t see any sign of fleas!
we live near farmland so insects are common. Weirdly I’m the only one bitten - or reacting enough to be irritated by it
weve just Amazon primed a smoke bomb. If this doesn’t work I have to burn the whole house down right?

Have you had a cat in the house which might have fleas - you'd notice the cat scratching bald patches on it's own head perhaps. You have to treat all the carpets - I've used this Frontline product
www.amazon.co.uk/FRONTLINE-HomeGard-Flea-Household-Spray/dp/B08JYFQ5ML/ref=sr_1_19?crid=MQ3TL73OIJX6&keywords=flea+treatment+cat+aerosol&qid=1650991290&rdc=1&sprefix=flea+treatment+cat+aerosol%2Caps%2C71&sr=8-19

Looks like hives to me, I used to get them like that. Do they get a little blister in the middle? Get some strong antihistamine, it will help either way. Strawberries cause mine.

FOJN · 26/04/2022 17:57

It does look like a Mossie bite, the buggers itch like mad. I react very badly (I think it's called Skeeter syndrome) so have an arsenal of things for prevention and treatment.

Plug in ultrasonic mosquito repellent - does most of the work.
Avon skin so soft dry oil is fairly well known as a Mossie deterrent, I think it contains citronella.
Magnetic screens for windows.
Never switch on a light in a room with an open window, those fuckers get in in a nanosecond.
Keep bedroom door shut during the day to keep them out.
Hydrocortisone and antihistamines for treatment.
I put a dab of hydrocortisone on bites and then cover with an adhesive film dressing to stop me scratching and causing a scan.

I hope the poster who bought the bite pen has more luck with it than I did.

Good luck finding out either what it's or something that helps.

I’d say carpet beetles, the larvae come out at night and bite. I’ve had them in this house for a while and I can’t find the source of them. I think they might be in the loft. I avoided insecticides for a while because of my baby and now I can’t get rid. Flea bomb the shit out of it!

myyellowcar · 26/04/2022 18:04

Apparently I’m wrong and they don’t bite but instead leave a bite like rash on the skin

passthetequila · 26/04/2022 18:12

I have the same reaction to what I assume are mozzie bites. Last year I read a tip somewhere about putting a hot teaspoon on the bite as the heat kills the enzyme/protein or something that the little bugger injected that causes the itch. Out of desperation I tried it and it did seem to help and I had a lot less scarring from last years bites.

CookieSue222 · 26/04/2022 18:16

If you are being bitten on your legs and feet I would second cat fleas.
We bought a house which was (unbeknown to us) infested with fleas - at one point I had 47 bites on my legs! Had to get Rentokil in eventually - that sorted the little buggers out 😂

I mean I do quite like my house, so if anyone has any suggestions of what I can do prior to committing arson that would be super helpful!!

if I can’t see any marks or anything on the mattress is there anything else I can do? Just ordered bug repellent bracelets too!!

Pest control man. They will do the whole house. No mess, no nasty smells.

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 26/04/2022 18:18

Just found this in the bedroom. What is it?! A carpet beetle??!
could this be the little bastard who’s caused all this? He’s now in a watery grave down the toilet.

am not convinced something so innocent looking could cause all my bites?

will try the teaspoon trick as feel like I may have to start cutting my own limbs off soon.

have got the flea bomb ready, will use when kids at school. Husband currently hoovering bed and mattress whilst I douse myself in citronella and saliva 😂

That is a carpet beetle, and they don't bite. But step up the hoovering because they will chew your carpets.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 26/04/2022 19:16

Bites round your feet and ankles are usually fleas. The bites on your back could be a mozzie if the sheet came loose during the night and it could get to your back. Or a flea got in the bed.

You can hear mozzie’s if you listen carefully. There’s that unforgettable horrible little whine as they hover round the room eyeing you up. If we hear one in our bedroom it’s all the lights on and dh standing up on the bed with a fly swat.

Yes and they also whine their way towards my kindle when I'm reading with the light off. If I turn the light back on again they quickly disappear up towards the ceiling, if I'm quick I can squash them! Very annoying when you just want to read in peace!

Thighdentitycrisis · 26/04/2022 19:31

If they are biting legs and feet it could be fleas in the carpet. Do you have pets or had in past? Eggs can survive a long time

Old fashioned home test - put a dish of boiling water on the floor, see if fleas jump in, they go for the heat.

disclaimer - not failsafe

Allsloppy · 26/04/2022 19:33

A few years ago I thought I was being bitten as it was always when I sat on my sofa but it was only me that was bitten. I hoovered constantly, put cello tape on my trousers so the fleas couldn’t get in, flea bombed and so on. Think jasper carrot sketch about moles but involving fleas. Turned out it was hives and had strong antihistamines to sort it out. 🤣

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 26/04/2022 19:42

I’ve done an experiment with the hot teaspoon and OMG whoever suggested it I could snog you. The itch hasn’t totally gone but the relief is INCREDIBLE! Shall I assume it’s a mosquito that’s caused this now?

OP posts:
Purpleheadgirl · 26/04/2022 19:44

That could still be a bed bug, look closely in all the seams etc. Smoke bombs didn't work for us but steam-cleaned the bed and mattress and eventually changed the divan base to a metal frame

Manekinek0 · 26/04/2022 20:50

Try the sticky bug traps. Put them in different locations and you should be able to get an ID.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/04/2022 20:53

SilverHairedCat
@MrsSkylerWhite can't stand marmite - and I'm bitten badly.“

I rest my case 😁

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 26/04/2022 21:51

Had my husband do the teaspoon trick along my back and honestly the RELIEF is INSANE I can’t even tell you how good it is not to be beside myself itching. I may even get some sleep tonight!! haven’t any marmite but I do love it. Am going to eat it every night before bed and hope I put off the hungry bastard. Are the sticky bug traps the ones that you hang up?

This reminds me of when I was breastfeeding and had leaky nipples . I woke up to find myself covered in ants feeding off my breast milk

i use a hot hairdryer rather than a teaspoon… quicker when the insect has had a feast rather than just one bite

KikiBobby · 27/04/2022 11:44

You must be blood type O. I am O positive (they love us) the amazon bombs work very well, I have used them (the Critter Kill ones) they are good for bed bugs and mosquitoes, most crawlies in fact. I used them and was prepared to use them again a few weeks later to kill the newly hatched bastards. Luckily I didn't need to. Apparently blood type Os are unlikely to catch malaria (although I would rather have that than the unbearable itching). The bombs will work a treat. Use some masking tape around windows and doors, leave drawers open to give the fuckers a nice strong dose! All will be well!

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 27/04/2022 13:05

That’s funny, I am o negative!! Husband isn’t sure if his blood type but his bites aren’t anywhere as bad. We bombed this morning so I’m hoping that’s it for now. I didn’t get any more bites last night!
