To burn down my house?

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 26/04/2022 08:34

I have been getting insect bites for over a month now. I had a patch of about five then a break for 3 weeks and now over the last few days I have got about 15.
they are intensely itchy for about 3/4 days. Swell up huge. Mostly on my feet and legs. So last night I sprayed myself with bug spray on my legs and feet. Woke up this morning to six bites across my back where the fucker has clearly walked across snacking on me.
joking aside the itching and burning is driving me to feel really beside myself. I haven’t slept properly for about 4 nights now because of the itching.
we have checked for bed bugs - DEFINITELY no sign of these
can’t see any sign of fleas!
we live near farmland so insects are common. Weirdly I’m the only one bitten - or reacting enough to be irritated by it
weve just Amazon primed a smoke bomb. If this doesn’t work I have to burn the whole house down right?

You said the bites are on your back, are the bites under where your clothes would be? If they're not on exposed skin then unless you like to wander around naked a lot it's probably not mosquitoes, more likely something crawling on the skin under the clothes (fleas, bed bugs).

I would try to flea bomb or permethrin spray the whole house just to rule out fleas. If it is mosquitoes then they're most active at dawn and dusk so keeping all windows closed around these times and checking your room before you go to sleep should help (mozzies are usually easy to spot).

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/04/2022 11:05

Sounds a bit mad: do you like marmite? Read somewhere years ago that mosquitos don’t like the blood of people who eat a lot of it for some weird reason I can’t remember. Works for me. Worth a try?

EatingToast · 26/04/2022 11:14

Not sure how helpful this will be but same happened to me. Couldn't see anything, flea sprayed house just in case, hoovered mattress, washed all bedding on hot wash etc nothing helped. Bought a new duvet and that's when it stopped. Still no idea what it was.

stopringingme · 26/04/2022 11:24

I was just about to post about marmite !

SilverHairedCat · 26/04/2022 11:35

@MrsSkylerWhite can't stand marmite - and I'm bitten badly.

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 26/04/2022 11:49

I would change s as ll bedding, remove mattress and vacuum everywhere, thank including bed and mattress.

also think about smoke bomb but take out batteries from smoke detectors first.
Take antihistamine to reduce your reaction to bites.

I read that a very cold house will kill bugs. Have we got any cold nights coming up? Leave heating off or borrow an air conditioner unit?

Skinterior · 26/04/2022 12:15

@ChristmasAtHogwarts

I came on to write the same post - are you in the Home Counties by any chance? I'm also absolutely covered with bites, for a few weeks now. I've never had it like this in the UK.

Thought it was bed bugs too but there is absolutely zero sign here.

I've barely seen any mosquitos here and not heard them, but all over my ankles and wrists. Are British mozzies silent?

babybunny123 · 26/04/2022 12:34

i went through this last year just could not work out where the blighters were coming from or what they were.. I bought some Indorex Spray which someone recommended. I sprayed the mattress, vacuumed under the bed and sprayed around the skirting boards, shut the door and didnt go back in the room for 24 hours. After weeks of getting bitten every night it stopped after using the spray. I never found out was was biting me but i still have the scars !!!

Hopefulsunrise · 26/04/2022 12:50

Eat loads and loads of garlic.

Hunkydory99 · 26/04/2022 14:18

Feet and legs make me wonder if there is Any chance of fleas? Best way to check is put a white piece of paper on a carpet they like slight heat too. You’ll soon see them appear. Check every room just in case.

Xpologog · 26/04/2022 14:24

Big bomb it.
Easy to buy ( Amazon, DIY store) remove all your houseplants and any fish/ cage birds.
Set the bug bombs off and retreat.

autumwinersummer · 26/04/2022 14:29

It could be horse fly bites, I work out side and do a lot of work in the country side and they are nasty little .

They can bite through clothing and trousers also, there bites can be seriously itchy for days and swell up. the reason being is that they scrape/cut away the skin rather than puncture it like mossy's and midges.

BeenHereForYonkyDoodles · 26/04/2022 14:32

Sounds like a random flea tbh op. You can pick them up just from sitting next to someone on a bus. I'd hot wash your pjs/bras/sheets and get them on the line.
A mosquito tends to bite once and never in bed as their wings are too delicate to burrow under sheets.
I am now itchy.

GrannyBloomers · 26/04/2022 14:34

At certain times of the year, I would get bitten to shreds when living next to open farm land. It affected everyone in the house. I washed all the bedding and duvets where possible, all the clothes and socks (they got under socks worn in bed), hoovered the mattresses and under beds. I think Indorex helped. No idea what it was but every year the same without fail.

tuliplover · 26/04/2022 15:49

Get screens on your windows and also doors. For windows you can get ones that stick on to a frame and remove them in the winter. Doors are a little more complicated.

DeskInUse · 26/04/2022 15:50

I moved to a new house recently and has the same. I bought some insect killer off Amazon that you spray in soft furnishings and carpets. That seemed to do the trick

DeskInUse · 26/04/2022 15:51

Oh and I got one of those insect light things that attracts them, then zaps them

Nanny0gg · 26/04/2022 15:59

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 26/04/2022 09:40

It could be mosquitos I think, how would I know?

Have a look and see if any on walls or ceilings.

I'm sure someone near me has a stagnant pond as I've been bitten to death and I react badly. Piriton and cream doesn't touch them

I've just ordered a 'bite pen' to see if that helps

Ifeellikedancing · 26/04/2022 16:02

At this time of year I would be suspicious of bird mites. Do you have any birds nesting in your roof space, or close to eaves?

Ifeellikedancing · 26/04/2022 16:06

My link didn't work. Food grade diatomaceous earth.

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 26/04/2022 16:08

Have attached a photo of the most current itchy bastard.
however ones across my back are now gearing up to start.

piriton, cetrizine and hydrocortisone have done NOWT

the bug bomb is here and we will be using tomorrow morning when kids all out!

They look like mossie bites to me. Germolene is your best option to reduce the itching or (I know it sounds gross) your own saliva.

ChristmasAtHogwarts · 26/04/2022 16:28

At this point if you said my own urine I would try it. Don’t mind me, off to lick my own feet. Not sure how I’ll manage my back though 🤨
