To think it's too cold for school uniform shorts?

Two DS's, both in nursery. Nursery have said summer uniform starting from today. Which means shorts for boys. U.K. based, feels a bit too cold to me!
But then again I thought, girls always wear dresses (though with tights I suppose).
AIBU to think it's too cold?

A nursery insisting on a particular item of clothing is wierd. I'm guessing Prep school?

But a few of the boys in my DDs class in her ordinary Yorkshire state school wear shorts all year. Indeed DD often forgoes tights in favour of knee socks as she doesn't like tights.

Mumofsend · 26/04/2022 06:16

The material on school trousers is so thin it doesn't really make much difference. Mine have been in shorts for a while and my DD a dress all year round. Her legs haven't fallen off yet

AchillesPoirot · 26/04/2022 06:18

My brother wore shorts all year in the 1980s and so did all the boys at his school.

DailyMailHater · 26/04/2022 06:20

My primary DS wears shorts all year round, hates trousers - no idea what we are going to do when he goes to secondary as the ones here don’t allow shorts

Mumdiva99 · 26/04/2022 06:23

My boys choose to west shorts all year around. Eldest now at secondary and forced into trousers. Youngest in y5 and making the best of the shorts.

They don't die. Their legs don't fall off. Just add a jumper and decent coat. Inside schools and nursery's is usually very warm.

JudgeRindersMinder · 26/04/2022 06:24

As long as their top half is warm, shorts are ok

carefullycourageous · 26/04/2022 06:25

Is it an independent nursery/school? If so yabu as you voluntarily signed up.for outdated uniform idiocy. If not independent school, ignore as it is unenforceable, surely?

They won't die from wearing shorts but as we all know, ne'er cast a clout til may.is out, so I agree it is too early.

Bickles · 26/04/2022 06:28

DS old school only had shorts for boys until year 5. Long socks in winter.
It was a mad, outdated uniform!
Anyway the point is he survived.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/04/2022 06:31

YANBU, it's still cold.

I don't give my DS the choice of shorts in cold weather, I'm the parent and he wears trousers. We walk 30 minutes each way to school though.

DS would choose shorts for 95% of the year. I've given up arguing. He'll be fine.

LondonQueen · 26/04/2022 06:52

Are they not allowed trousers? Our schools summer uniform says shorts are permitted but they're not mandated.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/04/2022 06:52

Summer uniform is usually optional rather than obligatory, I thought? So the children may wear shorts this term, but are not required to do so every day.

Pascha · 26/04/2022 06:53

My Ds1 hates school trousers and hasn't worn them for about 3 years now. It's shorts all year round for him. Ds2 swapped to shorts for this term happily.

I'd say after Easter is a normal time for most kids to be considering shorts or summer uniform though. Classrooms and nursery rooms are naturally hot and most children don't stay very still outside and are boiling within 5 minutes and stripping jumpers etc at this time of year.

RogueBorg · 26/04/2022 07:03

I don’t understand parents who refuse to let their kids wear shorts. DS lived in shorts all year round until he hit his teenage years. It’s a battle I just wasn’t going to fight. He clearly didn’t feel the cold in the way other kids did and was always super active. It’s a weird thing to insist on. 🤷‍♀️

simplesooze · 26/04/2022 07:03

Nah, kids are hardy. They get hot. They're more active than us and need to keep call

RogueBorg · 26/04/2022 07:03

And OP your son will be fine! It’s never THAT cold in this country that shorts are an issue!

BeerLoas · 26/04/2022 07:04

Not that cold here (SE) plus they are running around when outside.

MyBrilliantFriend · 26/04/2022 07:05

My ds is in shorts now. It’s around 18 degrees here by the middle of the day - warm enough for shorts.

Steelesauce · 26/04/2022 07:06

My middle son won't wear anything but shorts ever. Kids are like radiators I've found.

24petlegs · 26/04/2022 07:08

My DS was in shorts all year round (his choice not school policy) all the way through to Y6. Even in snow, he'd wear his school shorts.

Classrooms are warm and not well ventilated, plus they run around a lot.

Hallyup89 · 26/04/2022 07:09

Shorts are not usually a compulsory summer uniform item. I'd continue to send them in trousers tbh.

frostytimes · 26/04/2022 07:10

Thanks for all the replies. Temp highs of 12 here today.
Yes it's an independent school. I'm not sure if it is definitely compulsory for nursery.
Think I'll just put them in sorts today then to see how they go as lots of peoples kids seem to and are fine. Thanks again

You’re the parent - you decide whether they wear shorts or long trousers. If it’s warm they wear shorts, on colder days, trousers. No two days are the same.

CecilyP · 26/04/2022 07:12

It may be the summer term but it’s certainly cold for April! I’m still in winter clothes whilst having been dressed for summer for part of March.

DS old school only had shorts for boys until year 5. Long socks in winter.
It was a mad, outdated uniform!

it is outdated as in the days when little boys almost universally wore shorts, they also wore knee length coats. These days children tend to wear short jackets.
