To think something is seriously wrong with me? Strange symptoms.

I'm a 30 year old female and for the past few weeks I have developed a complete change in taste. For instance, things I used to enjoy eating, mushrooms for instance, I can no longer stand the taste of. Wine - used to love it, can't stomach it now. Cigarettes - 10 a day smoker, now make me gag. I suppose the second two are good things but there's loads of food. Things just taste bad to me at the moment.

I'm also really, really tired, and no matter how much sleep I get I still feel really tired and groggy. I have started taking vitamin d, folic acid, magnesium and zinc along with my anti depressant. I've been doing that for two months now, that's the only change that I've made.

On top of that I have this feeling of impending doom. For instance, I keep thinking that these symptoms means something is really wrong with me and I only have a few days to live (sounds crazy writing that down) but it's how I feel. I am going a run on Tuesday and a voice keeps saying, 'don't go the run because somethings wrong with your heart and you will have a heart attack during the run and die'. I go through phases of thinking something is wrong with my heart, but was at the hospital in December for it and all the heart tests that they ran came back absolutely fine.

I do have anxiety and my eye has started to twitch which happens when I'm stressed. So I know more likely that not I am suffering from an extreme bout of anxiety which is making me feel like I might die. However it feels really real to me and anxiety doesn't explain the tiredness, and changes in taste.

Has anyone else had these symptoms and been fine? Or heard of anyone feeling like this and then they pass away?

So sorry you’re going through this.
I had covid back in March 2020 and developed the same symptoms in the May. I have long covid and much much better now, but still get paranoid about my heart and used to wake most mornings at the start of it all feeling almost petrified and grateful that I hadn’t died in my sleep-it was horrendous. I’d hold my sleeping 3 year old next to me and try to calm down.
It was the worst around period time.
It does fade if it is this, so hold on in there x

My exes sense of taste changed when the doctor changed is AD medication over, could the pharmacy have changed supplier and the ingredients are slightly different in a new batch. Did your sense of taste change when you picked up a new script.

I've been looking at symptoms of hyperthyroidism and wow, I have a lot of those symptoms. Especially the thirst, I had just been saying to my mum a few days ago that my mouth is constantly dry and I can't get enough water. However was more worried about diabetes. Eye twitching, thirst, unable to sit still, fatigue, diarrhoea, mood swings, loss of interest in sex, anxiety. Check, check, check.

I hope you go to your doctor as the symptoms you describe are potentially an indicator of something very serious. The sense of impending doom is considered a huge red flag. Take care OP.

Like what if you don't mind me asking? What serious thing?

thisisi · 24/04/2022 19:13

More hyperthyroid symptoms I've been suffering -

  • excessive sweating
  • thinning hair
  • dry eyes

Definitely don't want to make this worse as it's extremely unlikely but some neurological conditions start with symptoms including changes in taste and smell as well as increased anxiety. GP is a good next step.

What ones?

Innocenta · 24/04/2022 19:25

@thisisi Most things where sense of impending doom is a red flag are acute issues, like anaphylaxis, rather than problems that last over an extended period. It can occur if your heart and lung function is compromised which is why I mentioned pulmonary embolism earlier (because they're comparatively more common following Covid), but if you don't have chest pain or shortness of breath it's very unlikely!

SherlocksSocks · 24/04/2022 19:26

Sounds like my B12 symptoms at the start, docs said anxiety gave me meds that treated some symptoms but not all, when I was still tired took a year of going back to the docs to be diagnosed with severe sleep apnea but six months later still suffering even while using the cpap, asked a different doc whether it's B12 related and I was incredibly low, half way through six loading doses now n feel better in some aspects and not others yet, I'll need injections every 3mths for life. Pls ask the doc to check.

Another vote for post-covid parosmia affecting your taste and smell. I started with it almost exactly 3 months after covid (and still suffering unfortunately).

Meat (especially chicken), coffee, onions and garlic are some of the most common things that smell/taste the worst to parosmia sufferers. Most foods are inedible to me at the moment :(

There are some Facebook groups that you can join for support if that is what it is (definitely see your GP though regardless to rule anything else out). There is no specific cure at the moment but lots of people are getting better over time.

I can't believe I forgot to put in my OP. 100 percent not pregnancy and I had covid in January and these symptoms started just a few weeks ago.

My sense of taste and smell changed a few weeks AFTER I had covid in early 2020. I didn't lose the taste at the time.

Definitely book a GP appointment and mention the feeling of an “impending sense of doom”, as they take this seriously nowadays. It can be an indicator of an illness. Your symptoms and feelings are unusual and valid and deserve professional investigation.

I agree. You might think it sounds a bit odd but they do like to know.

Xpologog · 24/04/2022 20:14

Have you had a Covid booster jab recently? I had mine a couple of weeks ago and I had a horrible taste in my mouth for days. Mostly gone but still happening occasionally and I can’t stand the taste of tea — usually drink gallons in a day.

Pregnant?

Could it be very early peri menopause?

Crushing fatigue, numbness and dizziness were my first MS symptoms. Diagnosed at 31.

tootiredtoocare · 24/04/2022 21:20

Talk to your GP, getting your bloods checked might be sensible. Also, feelings of dread could be anxiety, it shocked me when I got anxiety symptoms during lockdown 2, I'm not an anxious person. There are some great mindfulness apps to help.

Idontgiveashitanymore · 24/04/2022 21:26

I had covid and have never been the same since, my food habits have changed .totally stopped smoking and I’m constantly shattered and worn out .

Hutchy16 · 24/04/2022 21:30

Just a thought, I have OCD and this causes irrational/destructive thoughts, anxiety, an impending feeling of doom, thoughts that I might be dying…I’m sure these are also symptoms of other mental health issues not just anxiety issues. It could be worth talking through these things with your gp and/or seeing a psychiatric nurse/doctor to rule out any other potential things.

you definitely don’t sound like you are dying, you sound like me. I went on the beach when I had a blister and I had convinced myself it was going to be infected, i would lose my foot, and I would die, all by the time I got home.

TwoWayMirror · 24/04/2022 21:33

This sounds like severe anxiety to me, I’ve suffered with it all my adult life. Bad flare ups come out of nowhere, the feeling of doom and loss of appetite are familiar to me. I’ve actually just lost a stone in weight actually due to food tasting wrong… which is starting to improve again now.
I would definitely see a GP as soon as possible and would expect a medication review, I had my dose doubled which has helped

Squeezyhug · 24/04/2022 21:36

I got Covid in December 2020 and seemed to recover well then end of March everything tasted and smelled awful to the point of making me gag.
Things have improved but still not 100%.

I didn’t have fatigue but got weird muscle weakness and tenderness in both arms which
still comes and goes.

Maybe you have long Covid ?

hashbrownsandwich · 24/04/2022 21:45

Diabetes.

CantGetDecentNickname · 24/04/2022 22:19

Please see your GP asap. Like most PP, I think it sounds like it may be Covid again or an after effect. The bit that worries me is feeling of impending doom as this although this can be a symptom of anxiety which you have already stated that you have, it can also be a symptom of a heart attack so should be taken seriously. Either way, a review of your meds would be a good idea. Wishing you well.
