To think something is seriously wrong with me? Strange symptoms.

I'm a 30 year old female and for the past few weeks I have developed a complete change in taste. For instance, things I used to enjoy eating, mushrooms for instance, I can no longer stand the taste of. Wine - used to love it, can't stomach it now. Cigarettes - 10 a day smoker, now make me gag. I suppose the second two are good things but there's loads of food. Things just taste bad to me at the moment.

I'm also really, really tired, and no matter how much sleep I get I still feel really tired and groggy. I have started taking vitamin d, folic acid, magnesium and zinc along with my anti depressant. I've been doing that for two months now, that's the only change that I've made.

On top of that I have this feeling of impending doom. For instance, I keep thinking that these symptoms means something is really wrong with me and I only have a few days to live (sounds crazy writing that down) but it's how I feel. I am going a run on Tuesday and a voice keeps saying, 'don't go the run because somethings wrong with your heart and you will have a heart attack during the run and die'. I go through phases of thinking something is wrong with my heart, but was at the hospital in December for it and all the heart tests that they ran came back absolutely fine.

I do have anxiety and my eye has started to twitch which happens when I'm stressed. So I know more likely that not I am suffering from an extreme bout of anxiety which is making me feel like I might die. However it feels really real to me and anxiety doesn't explain the tiredness, and changes in taste.

Has anyone else had these symptoms and been fine? Or heard of anyone feeling like this and then they pass away?

Change in taste and tiredness could both be symptoms of long Covid.

Happymum12345 · 24/04/2022 17:16

I imagine it’s anxiety, which has a strange and sometimes terrifying effect and on the body. I hope you manage to get some more help from your gp.💐

I can't believe I forgot to put in my OP. 100 percent not pregnancy and I had covid in January and these symptoms started just a few weeks ago.

Could still be covid.

I know many who are now on their second Covid infection since Xmas/New year!

Zotter · 24/04/2022 17:36

I am wondering whether the taste changes may possibly be delayed effect of Covid. My friend who had covid says he is fine but there are months on still certain foods that taste weird and he can no longer enjoy.

It really could be, it's just this feeling of impending doom. I feel like I'm going to die soon. But I've felt like this before and have seeked tests from doctors and been at a and e sure I was having a heart attack a few times. I can't keep wasting nhs resources.

Name changed

Long covid is certainly a possibility.

Anxiety can cause some very strange physical symptoms, like twitches etc.
Are you on any specific meds for anxiety, maybe a betablocker may help. Might be worth speaking to your GP. In the meantime, Rescue Remedy spray works well (ime.)

I'm on 20 mg fluoxetine. So very low dose. I take beta blockers if I have to give a presentation at uni etc.

StellaAndCrow · 24/04/2022 17:47

I''ve met a lot of people who've had COVID, and have had odd symptoms for months afterwards, especially tiredness, fatigue, and changes in smell/taste. I think that's the most likely cause of your symptoms.

chiatta · 24/04/2022 17:47

sounds like me in my first trimester of pregnancy

Sorry posted too soon. I was initially put on fluoxetine due to harm OCD wherein I kept worrying I was going to harm someone (mainly my child) and was so ill with it I couldn't eat or sleep. The anti depressant really sorted me out and helped but it may be time for an increase although thank god the intrusive thoughts haven't came back like they were. They were horrendous. It's just impending doom, weird symptoms and now thIs internal voice telling me I'm about to die. But I know it's just me telling myself that. God writing all that down, I think I definetely need to see my GP.

@bonenragman
Ok,now the defo not preg is out way....why are you take supplements? As you said that is only change youve made.
Stop.
I am not a pharmacist, med expert,but-its clearly the next logical explanation.
Your surgery nurse can do your bloods check vit levels. Have you-not googled if supplements interact with your prescribed meds?try that
you still probli arent gony die tho...how long you been on anti-d.?

I'm taking the folic acid and vitamin d on prescription as blood test showed I was low. The magnesium is meant to help with sleep and PCOS and the zinc I think I read helps with PCOS also. Been on my anti ds for nearly 3 years.

Have you looked into parosmia after covid? Mine started 3 months post covid and now lots of foods are absolutely repulsive to me. I can no longer eat eggs, meat and onions as a result.

Oh no, never heard of it! Thank you looking into that now.

lassof · 24/04/2022 18:15

Those symptoms do sound like me when I had B vitamin deficiency, so if you've actually been diagnosed with a B vitamin deficiency I would go with that as the first option. If you can afford it, buy a good B complex (for all B vits) or methylfolate supplement instead of the folic acid.

tkwal · 24/04/2022 18:20

Pregnancy, covid, anxiety , sepsis were the first things that came into my head. Doubt if it's sepsis , sense of impending doom is a symptom for that but you would be having high temperature and be really ill by now if this started a few weeks ago. I would do a pregnancy test to be on the safe side but the change of taste most strongly suggests covid after effects.

Crimeismymiddlename · 24/04/2022 18:23

If you are not pregnant it might be worth getting a blood test. I had similar symptoms with a hyperactive thyroid-the eye twitching in particular as anxiety had gotten out of control. I was also very fatigued.

tolerable · 24/04/2022 18:26

defo ask gp -check if interaction is known.. could be wrong but i think sounds as tho anti d being blockt.like i said.guessing. hope you get resolved ,feel better soon.x

stayathomer · 24/04/2022 18:26

Op I can't say anything more than everyone above but hope it all gets sorted for you, I've long covid and fatigue is head wrecking

Bikeybikeface · 24/04/2022 18:31

Have you had covid in the last year? Could be Parosmia.

Pombearsforthewin · 24/04/2022 18:39

pheochromocytoma is a tumour on the adrenal gland which causes a feeling of impending doom. I’d go see my GP and explain your symptoms as you have here. This is quite a rare tumour though but should be considered when diagnosing,

Dreamingof3 · 24/04/2022 18:41

Hope you get some answers op.

Could definitely be a lingering effect from.covid. if you're going to your gp I'd also ask them to check iron and thyroid levels x

50ShadesOfCatholic · 24/04/2022 18:45

I hope you go to your doctor as the symptoms you describe are potentially an indicator of something very serious. The sense of impending doom is considered a huge red flag. Take care OP.

Lochjeda · 24/04/2022 18:49

Yes I have currently with the addition of exhaustion, docs ran full bloods and I'm low in magnesium and folate.
