To think something is seriously wrong with me? Strange symptoms.

I'm a 30 year old female and for the past few weeks I have developed a complete change in taste. For instance, things I used to enjoy eating, mushrooms for instance, I can no longer stand the taste of. Wine - used to love it, can't stomach it now. Cigarettes - 10 a day smoker, now make me gag. I suppose the second two are good things but there's loads of food. Things just taste bad to me at the moment.

I'm also really, really tired, and no matter how much sleep I get I still feel really tired and groggy. I have started taking vitamin d, folic acid, magnesium and zinc along with my anti depressant. I've been doing that for two months now, that's the only change that I've made.

On top of that I have this feeling of impending doom. For instance, I keep thinking that these symptoms means something is really wrong with me and I only have a few days to live (sounds crazy writing that down) but it's how I feel. I am going a run on Tuesday and a voice keeps saying, 'don't go the run because somethings wrong with your heart and you will have a heart attack during the run and die'. I go through phases of thinking something is wrong with my heart, but was at the hospital in December for it and all the heart tests that they ran came back absolutely fine.

I do have anxiety and my eye has started to twitch which happens when I'm stressed. So I know more likely that not I am suffering from an extreme bout of anxiety which is making me feel like I might die. However it feels really real to me and anxiety doesn't explain the tiredness, and changes in taste.

Has anyone else had these symptoms and been fine? Or heard of anyone feeling like this and then they pass away?

@bonenragman

In that case it sounds like hugely elevated anxiety levels OP.
Even the physical symptoms.

I can't believe I forgot to put in my OP. 100 percent not pregnancy and I had covid in January and these symptoms started just a few weeks ago.

You can get covid again, though, even in quick succession, so I’d test for that. If you’re out of free LFTs, I saw them in Boots for £2 earlier today.

bonenragman · 24/04/2022 16:00

@FloraPostePosts oh I still have a few left. Off to do that now

As previous posters have said
pregnant or anxiety.

I have been suffering from anxiety during peri menopause. I know exactly what you mean about the impending doom feeling. And inner voice warnings.
The same happens to me especially just before a period. They are all over the place now so I never know when one is coming

SnowRoses · 24/04/2022 16:02

You can get Covid again
If you had Covid in January , you can 100% have it again now.
Although if you have had the symptoms 2 weeks, you will more than likely be ‘negative’ now….

Changing / Upping Antidepressants can cause anxiety / depression to get worse before it gets better.
Also some anti-depressants can cause all sorts of random symptoms,
Have you looked at the leaflet?

mistermagpie · 24/04/2022 16:04

It could be Covid, I've had it twice and I know people who have had it twice closer together than you would be.

The taste thing rings true as does the tiredness, but also the sense of doom. Not sure why but I know that people have felt this when they have had Covid.

Budapestdreams · 24/04/2022 16:04

Also, you could have long Covid.
It can start a few weeks after having Covid infection and common symptoms include fatigue, heart palpitations and increase in anxiety/depression.
Symptoms can also get worse if you push yourself.
Obviously Covid affects your taste and smell, and you can be reinfected again soon after getting it so you may have had it again a few weeks ago.
I would speak to your GP who can do some blood tests to check for anaemia, thyroid problems etc but look up long Covid symptoms to see if that could be it as they can show up weeks or even months after Covid.

Aww it's horrible. I have PCOS so my periods are also all over the place so could very well be hormonal for me also. Even just today I kissed my daughter bye to go swimming with her dad and the internal voice was like, 'that's the last time you will see her'. It's horrible. And I collected her after swimming and she was absolutely fine so I know it's not rationale but it's difficult to tell yourself that sometimes.

Covid would explain the taste/ tiredness also a sinus infection could make your taste off. Deffo sounds like you need a meds review for your anxiety it may be that the meds arnt working well enough anymore and you need an increase

bonenragman · 24/04/2022 16:06

Thank you for all the suggestions. I will get in touch with doctor tomorrow for some tests/medication review.

I would also say anxiety. I have it around health related things too with very real symptoms. The voices in your head are OCD thoughts I imagine as I also have those. You will be hyper sensitive to tastes and focusing more than you ever have before. It is an endless cycle. Try to listen to a guided meditation on anxiety on YouTube to try to channel your thoughts until you can visit gp tomorrow.

Dodie66 · 24/04/2022 16:25

Could still be covid. You can catch it again. Do a test

Bostonten · 24/04/2022 16:26

A quick Google and anxiety can change food tastes. Try not to worry and obsess until you see your Dr.

Innocenta · 24/04/2022 16:32

Do you have any leg pain or chest pain? The only thing I would want to check out in addition to what has been mentioned is a possible blood clot or pulmonary embolism as this can occur during or after Covid, and some of what you mention can be subtle indicators. But it all can equally well be anxiety, etc.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/04/2022 16:38

Obvious answer is Covid , you could easily have / has it again.

Fileexplorerrrr · 24/04/2022 16:38

Your thyroid can change your tastebuds, cause extreme tiredness and depression/anxiety.

Hope you get the problem sorted soon 😊

Rondvassbu · 24/04/2022 16:39

I know plenty people who had Covid twice within the space of 3 or 4 months so you definitely cannot rule that out.

unim · 24/04/2022 16:39

Could it be - or have been - Covid? So many of these symptoms are typical of Covid.

unim · 24/04/2022 16:40

And yep, I know somebody who had Covid in February and again in April! (Negative PCR test for a flight in late March so they are certain it was two separate episodes).

No nothing like that thankfully. My LFT I just took was negative however I know it still can't be ruled out. Away to now Google 'pulmonary embolism' 🥴

Could still be a new COVID infection, even if you had it in January - I have known people to have it twice within 2-3 months this year.

Waitingforbabyno1toarrive · 24/04/2022 16:53

Have you had covid that your know of? My taste and smell were off kilter for a year after I had covid, the only thing that has brought them back to almost normal is being pregnant.

Things that I used to like suddenly tasted awful. My favourite perfume smelt like burnt furniture polish etc.
My sense of taste and smell were also very muffled, I couldn't smell a lot of things that others could.
Now 4 months pregnant and I csn suddenly smell everything!

AiryFairyLights · 24/04/2022 16:55

Just a thought @bonenragman has the chemist switched your brand of anti depressant? My pharmacy switched me to a generic one and it took a while for me to get used to it even though essentially they are the same but their make up was slightly different x
Definitely speak with your gp - it could be with your anxiety and everything that’s happened over the last three years with covid etc you need to up your dosage but ONLY if you gp recommends it x
Good luck and please let us know how you get on xx
