To hate the trend of high neck/chest tops?

MooseBreath · 23/04/2022 12:59

I am looking to buy some new tops, as my old clothes are starting to look a bit tatty and I constantly look like a slob. I am quite busty (34G) and am short at only 5'2. I am finding it really difficult to find decent clothing to suit my body!

I know I look better in V necks and scoop necks because high necked tops make me look enormous. I also need a fitted waist because I actually have a waist hidden under the excess fabric in loose tops. I also prefer clothes to be made to last and am not keen on fast fashion.

Budget is fairly tight. I have checked my local supermarkets and department stores, but no luck so far. I scrounged some charity shops last week, but it all seems to be frumpy or Primark quality with a weirdly high pricetag.

Any ideas or sympathy?

I hate them too op. Most of them are fine on 20 somethings or very stylish people. On me they make me look 20 years older and 2 stone heavier!

Nospringchix · 23/04/2022 13:06

Sounds like you're a similar shape to me! I'm a 32F and I have similar problems with tops, I don't like how I look in anything with a high neck. I find it frustrating not being able to find anything.

woodhill · 23/04/2022 13:06

I don't like them either

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/04/2022 13:08

I like them but I'm quite flat chested so they suit me!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/04/2022 13:10

You are living my nightmare, except that I am taller, so I actually look like I should be such on the front of a galleon on the high seas Sad

Houseplantmad · 23/04/2022 13:11

Vinted might be worth a look?

needmorethanthis · 23/04/2022 13:14

I love high necks because my chest is flat and I have a scrawny neck. I also react badly to UV so any sun on my neck brings me out in hives. Big red blotchy neck is hidden with high neck tops. Thank goodness they make these!

LucindaJane · 23/04/2022 13:15

@TheYearOfSmallThings amazing!

OP, I'm the same as you. I have a couple of nice bits from Pepperberry but they weren't the cheapest and alas don't do clothes anymore. I currently live in leggings but would love to find some nicer bits that flatter me and are good quality.

QuestionableMouse · 23/04/2022 13:15

Have a look at Lands' End. They're on the more expensive side but the stuff lasts really well. I pretty much live in these-

I used to get clothes from Bravissimo, but they no longer do clothes, only lingerie and swimwear. I will check out Vinted and the other suggestions!

I'm not saying high necks shouldn't exist, but there seems to be a huge gap in the market for women with a curvy figure.

Same here can’t ever wear a T-shirt without looking like a battleship under full sail. I wear a lot of shirts!

MangoLipstick · 23/04/2022 14:20

Yeh I’m not a fan either, I have quite big boobs and look better with a lower neckline.

Saying that, I prefer this trend to the puffy sleeve trend from a couple of years ago - I couldn’t find a dress or top without those bloody massive puffed up shoulders or sleeves 🤣

Chewchewaboogiw · 23/04/2022 14:20

Gap used to do lovely slash neck long sleeve t s . Fitted n v flattering. Google tye shape u want.. u may find stuff on e bay for eg

TheWoollybacksWife · 23/04/2022 14:34

I can recommend this top from Nutmeg at Morrisons. It's made from a decent thickness of cotton and holds its shape very well. I've got about 4 black ones, a couple of breton stripes and one each of about 3 other colours.

It might not be suitable for the summer but I've been wearing them the rest of the year for about 2 years now.

MangoBum · 23/04/2022 14:38

I don’t mind a higher neck for winter <toasty> but all the high necks in the shops (and stupid frilly sleeves) for Spring/Summer are doing my head in. Give me some air!

JudyGemstone · 23/04/2022 14:42

I can’t do high neck either, have 34DDs and it looks ridiculous.

Vinted is definitely your friend, you can search for different styles of tops easily

PerpetualStudent · 23/04/2022 14:44

Rapanui do a nice scoop-neck t shirt. Not super cheap but sturdy organic cotton (and proper short sleeves, not bits of nothing that disappear into your armpit!)

RampantIvy · 23/04/2022 14:51

No sympathy from me, sorry. Just envy.
As a flat chester with a scrawny neck higher necklines suit me. My problem is that too many tops and T-shirts seem to be very low cut or have very wide necklines.

You might like to look at this thread for inspiration.

Terfydactyl · 23/04/2022 14:51

Just yesterday I was googling for v neck cami tops. Next came up as an option so I'll be going into a physical shop soon to see if they are any good.

I struggle with v neck sleeveless cos I cant stand sleeves of any sort.

Just googled again and very have quite a lot?

Agree with trying Lands' End.

My sister is very similar to you OP and Lands' End is her 'go to' for every day clothes.

Also they seem to permanently have a sale on! Today it's their "Mid Season up to 80% off Sale. Plus, shop now for 50% OFF selected New Arrivals and 40% OFF ALL other Full Price styles."

If you don't like that offer there'll be another along tomorrow lol.

Indicatrice · 23/04/2022 14:57

I’m in between, I don’t like to show any cleavage but also don’t like scoop or crew or high necks.

And the material has to be right too due to sensory issues.

Finding soft tops where the neckline is just above my cleavage is rare, I buy 2/3 of the same when I find one.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 23/04/2022 14:58

You have my sympathy. I'm short and round with H cup boobs and not much neck. High necklines make me look like have even less neck and even more boob.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 23/04/2022 15:08

I hate them too OP, always have. I'm flat chested and I feel they look dreadful on me.

whoruntheworldgirls · 23/04/2022 15:08

Sympathy, I'm large chested too and need a synched in waist or i look like I'm wearing a sack. It's a bloody nightmare to find anything, i end up on ebay looking for clothes by Simply Be or Yours.

MorganSeventh · 23/04/2022 15:10

I feel your pain. I am five three and have similar problems and if I don't have something fitted on my waist I look two sizes bigger than I am...

I realise not everyone likes Boden, but I have had quite a lot of luck with these and- they're on offer at JL at present. They're very stretchy so I size up to fit over my boobs and they still fit at the waist. The three quarter length arm is useful if you're short because it means the sleeves don't come over your hands. And the double layer front means that a bra can't be seen through the fabric. They have then in different colours throughout the year, and I would never pay full price, you can always get at least 20% off if you google for codes.
