To try to match the bag to the shop.

I have amassed a large number of Bags for Life from various supermarkets and always try to use matching bags for the shop that I am visiting if I have any - I use Aldi bags in Aldi and Tesco bags in Tesco's and so on.

If I don't have enough of the right bags I am happy to use non-matching bags (I'm not completely mad) but I will always start with the "correct" bag.

Am I the only one?

Don’t think anyone really cares tbh

Moomeh · 20/04/2022 16:01

Yabu BUT when I used to volunteer for the food bank we always gave food in matching plastic bags eg all sainsburys or all tesco. This was so that when travelling home it wasn't obvious they had come from the food bank (like it might be if they had all mismatching bags). They were really thoughtful about stuff like that, I learnt a lot

Bloballbovish · 20/04/2022 16:03

I'm quite a contrary type, and often try to use bags that are not the ones from that shop. I don't know why, I know no-one cares, I just do it.

PukkaP · 20/04/2022 16:04

I do the opposite. I went to Aldi and took Aldi bags and they charged me for them even though I'd brought them from home.

Comedycook · 20/04/2022 16:04

My bags are all mis matching. I have Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Lidl, Aldi, whatever. Never ever occured to me they should be matching. Also, if I saw someone with mismatching ones I wouldn't even notice let alone think it was because they had been to a foodbank

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/04/2022 16:04

I have used both a Lidl and a Harrods bag in the same shop. It gave me a wierd pleasure...

Most of mt bags are foreign supermarkets though.

Bluebellbike · 20/04/2022 16:09

When I was young (1970s) my Mum would have been mortified if she had gone in a shop with a bag from another retailer. There were very few supermarkets then but there was no way she would do that.

SiobhanSharpe · 20/04/2022 16:09

Outing myself as a massive supermarket snob here -- I wouldn't use an Aldi/Lidl bag in Waitrose but I don't mind the other way round 😊😊😊.
Not that I shop much, if at all, in Lidaldi. Honest.

AryaStarkWolf · 20/04/2022 16:13

I couldn't give a shite tbh, i just grab the first one that comes to hand

110APiccadilly · 20/04/2022 16:14

I used to try and use the wrong bag in case they got confused and tried to charge me for the bag!

I'm now less paranoid and use whichever was to hand.

I'm surprised that in the 70's your mom would have brought her own bags tbh. It's only since they started charging/people realised plastic was the devil that we started bringing our own bags

Neverendingdust · 20/04/2022 16:15

I take my M&S ones to Tesco- no chance in hell I’d have a Tesco bag.

I wouldn't assume food bank either but it was our policy and it was a nice thoughtful one I think

Lottieskeeper · 20/04/2022 16:19

I always make sure I'm using bags from a different shop. I like to think I'm showing them that they're nothing special and I can always go elsewhere if I fancy Grin I'm absolutely sure this keeps them on their toes.

Longdistance · 20/04/2022 16:19

I used my Lidl bag in M&S foods earlier 🤷🏼‍♀️ Meh!

Burnt0utMum · 20/04/2022 16:20

I leave my bags in the car and pack at the boot. Don't like them in the way when I'm shopping and I would forget to bring them in anyway. Only exception is when using scan & go as then I pack as I go round the shop. Total mismatch of bags.

AlisonDonut · 20/04/2022 16:22

I used to use the opposite just because I hate advertising shops for free.

Now in France I have one French bag, and all my others are the old UK ones anyway.

AnnUumellmahaye · 20/04/2022 16:24

I shop in a few different supermarkets, the only time it bothers me is when I can only find a posher supermarket bag, when I am going into a budget supermarket. I think the cashiers must think I am trying to put on a show for my neighbours when I return with my shopping.

FloraPostePosts · 20/04/2022 16:26

In the days when it was still quite new to take your own (before plastic bags were charged for) I used to take bags from any shop other than the one I was shopping in, so they couldn’t accuse me of nicking them, or try to charge me for them at the checkout. Nowadays everyone brings their own so I don’t care!

Hadalifeonce · 20/04/2022 16:29

Arya, where I lived, in the 60s and 70s we all used to take our own bags, as most of the shopping came from small retailers, butcher, greengrocer etc.. The only time we had bags was from a department store.

In the 1970s I'd have thought it more likely that your Mum would take either a wicker shopping basket or string bag. I don't recall plastic carrier bags before the early 80s and I'm sure you had to pay for them then.

My mum had a wicker basket and a shopping trolley in the 70s. Or we used a cardboard box from the shop. Plastic bags arrived a bit later - early 80s?

guffaux · 20/04/2022 18:48

I use Booths bags wherever I go- washable, roomy, strong and as a bonus, witty 😀

randomsabreuse · 20/04/2022 18:52

I'm lucky if I remember my bags so mostly they're in the car, or by my front door where I meant to grab them from... So nope don't think about which beyond trying to bring a cool bag for frozen stuff and enough bags to contain my shop...

LubaLuca · 20/04/2022 18:58

I don't care. Nobody is interested in my shopping bags, me included.
