To try to match the bag to the shop.

I have amassed a large number of Bags for Life from various supermarkets and always try to use matching bags for the shop that I am visiting if I have any - I use Aldi bags in Aldi and Tesco bags in Tesco's and so on.

If I don't have enough of the right bags I am happy to use non-matching bags (I'm not completely mad) but I will always start with the "correct" bag.

Am I the only one?

Most of my bags fare from Carrefour in France, they're bigger and better so no I dont!

I used to use the opposite just because I hate advertising shops for free.

Now in France I have one French bag, and all my others are the old UK ones anyway.

I don't get this. You're still advertising the shop on the outside of the bag regardless of where the shopping on the outside was bought? Tesco bag with Asda shopping inside - you're still 'advertising' Tesco.

RichardsGear · 21/04/2022 09:05

Shopping on the inside, that should be!

I have the hessian or canvas bags which I keep in the boot of my car
1 aldi
2 lidl
2 tesco
1 sainsburys
1 M n S
2 Booths
1 staples
I just grab nearest or best size for what I’m purchasing
the most versatile ones are the Tesco ones although the staples one is huge so take that one when I’m shopping for DM as it fits the 1.5kg cereal boxes

Yeah, I do this. There's only two supermarkets in our very small town and I don't want the lovely friendly staff in either to feel like I'm betraying them by going to the other supermarket. Yes, I know I'm being completely ridiculous and that they don't care, but still. 🤓

I don't care that I'm advertising my old Sainsbury's bag for life in tesco or Lidl or whatever , everyone knows other food stores exist and that people shop in different places , the person on the checkouts don't care either , it's obvious they are old bags for life too they are so battered and worn out.

I'm quite a contrary type, and often try to use bags that are not the ones from that shop. I don't know why, I know no-one cares, I just do it.

Same! I don't really know why. Vaguely aware that carrying or wearing anything with a brand on it means you're a walking advertisement, maybe.

I particularly enjoy taking a Lidl bag into Waitrose or M&S.

I get where you are coming from OP but no, I don't - I just pull the first one out the cupboard. However, I grew up with a mum who was bit like Monica from friends with her towels only with carrier bags (and this was before we had to pay for them). She had the 'really good ones' which no-one was allowed to use, the mid range which we could use to go swimming, on a picnic etc and then the every day use ones. She kept the good ones folded very neatly in a big pile and if you accidentally used the wrong one, she would pull you up for it and change it over. She also used to buy fruit and put it in a bowl but we weren't allowed to eat it - it was just to show we could afford it lol - so it sat in the bowl for ages until it went all soggy then got chucked out and replenished.

squiller · 21/04/2022 09:47

I honestly don’t even think about it. The bulk of my shopping goes in big ikea bags tbh.

rc22 · 21/04/2022 13:14

No I like to be a bit subversive so I use my Waitrose and M and S bags in Lidl and Aldi and vice versa. I use Asda bags in Tesco, Tesco bags in Sainsburys and Sainsburys bags in Morrisons 😂

I'm surprised that in the 70's your mom would have brought her own bags tbh. It's only since they started charging/people realised plastic was the devil that we started bringing our own bags

My Mum used to always take her own bags shopping. Even when supermarkets started opening she used to still use independent greengrocers, butchers and fishmongers and took fabric and hessian bags there. The first little supermarket to open near us was the "VG". Next was Asda. Neither were anywhere near as big as supermarkets today. I am not even sure the supermarkets supplied bags then.
