To try to match the bag to the shop.

I have amassed a large number of Bags for Life from various supermarkets and always try to use matching bags for the shop that I am visiting if I have any - I use Aldi bags in Aldi and Tesco bags in Tesco's and so on.

If I don't have enough of the right bags I am happy to use non-matching bags (I'm not completely mad) but I will always start with the "correct" bag.

Am I the only one?

AIBU?

Yes, you are.

I used to have some "ladybird" tesco bags, about 10 yrs ago, but they got binned after I'd used them for hospital trips for my dad - I didn't really want to use them after that.

I replaced them with some Sainsbury ones (with the turquoise peacock) and they're starting to wear down after a few years of shopping and cats 😹

Nobody cares what you use.

Chikapu · 20/04/2022 19:18

Ain't nobody got time for that. I don't think anyone cares about my WoW cotton shopping bags whether I'm in Lidl or Aldi!

Onlyforcake · 20/04/2022 19:20

You're definitely over thinking that.

Beautifulmonster87 · 20/04/2022 19:52

Have you got an excessive amount of time on your hands to firstly do this.. secondly post about it?! People are so strange!!!

Purplelion · 20/04/2022 19:57

I work at a supermarket and can tell you that not one member of staff will notice or care what bags anyone is using!

RishiRich · 20/04/2022 20:11

YANBU. I feel as though people think I'm trying to pass off my shopping as posh if I take a Waitrose bag to ASDA. I know this is ridiculous because who IRL would notice or care, and if they did they're not going to say anything, and even if they did say something then why would I care?

MissMaple82 · 21/04/2022 01:18

Sorry but that is ridiculous. Who give a s##t

PaulaTrilloe · 21/04/2022 05:57

DH has to match bag to the shop. I just grab what's nearest.

My DM had a phase of turning plastic bags inside out so you couldn't see the name of the shop as she objected to free advertising! 😂bizarre as I remember sainsbo bags were orange it just drew more attention!

Lottieskeeper · 20/04/2022 16:19

I always make sure I'm using bags from a different shop. I like to think I'm showing them that they're nothing special and I can always go elsewhere if I fancy Grin I'm absolutely sure this keeps them on their toes.

I just snort laughed at this.

I voted YABU @McT123 because I do this too… but then I also have a specific pattern that the pegs must go when hanging washing outside and various other habits that drive my DH mad so looks like I’m in the minority Blush

DrierThanANunsNasty · 21/04/2022 06:08

Sorry meant YANBU @McT123 - MN please give us an edit button Hmm

How rude. This is the sort of content I like on MN. It is interesting to see all the variation of people's thoughts and habits in something so everyday.

I just take the same bags everywhere as I don't have any from anywhere else but if I did I think I'd try and take the "wrong" ones so they didn't think I'd picked up new ones.

Sgtmajormummy · 21/04/2022 06:57

One year I had so many assorted Bags for Life that I made a resolution to take more BFL than I needed and offer them to people in front of me at the checkout if they were struggling. That got rid of a good number.
Now all my cute bags for life migrate to DC1’s house. I get them back when I visit and the process starts again…
In the car there’s an IKEA cooler tote with the only 4 I use. Two medium IKEA blue bags so nobody gets offended (like in the OP), Morrisons pears (I’m in Italy so there’s the cool factor) and a Lidl.
I also have an umbrella-fabric Reisenthel shopper in my handbag. No free advertising there.

Iorderedyouapancake · 21/04/2022 07:03

My dh does the same as you OP so you’re not the only one!

Bornsloppy · 21/04/2022 07:07

No, I just grab whatever bag i find first. Some of ours must be over 10 years old, I don't think anyone cares.

I do to a degree (as in if the right ones are in sight amongst the pile in the boor, I'll pick them up in preference).

I do it in honor of my mother, who once (when I was young) got told off for saying the wrong shop name whiles talking to a sales assistant, and he told her "please don't swear ma'm" and she got all flustered as she thought he meant it seriously, while I helpfully laughed. (She did figure it wasn't serious after he explain the joke (and apologised!).)

Each time I purposely select the "right" bag I remember that moment and smile.

AnImaginaryCat · 21/04/2022 07:19

Oh, meant to add somethings I use Waitrose bags - just to throw people off and confused people. (I live in Ireland where there are no Waitroses.)

Admittedly, I'm probably the most confused as I've no idea where they came from.

I'm surprised that in the 70's your mom would have brought her own bags tbh. It's only since they started charging/people realised plastic was the devil that we started bringing our own bags

I am a child of the 70s. My parents always used their own bags, my mum in particular has always hated plastic bags, she wasn’t an early eco warrior, but she hated plastic bags. I think they used to charge back then too, I worked in a supermarket when I was a teenager in the 80s and I think we charged for bags then. Obviously there was then a long period when bags were free because one stopped charging and all the rest followed.

hangrylady · 21/04/2022 07:20

It wouldn't cross my mind to be honest. Most of my bags are Aldi anyway because that's where I shop.

Forgotthespuds · 21/04/2022 07:20

I had to return some clothes to M&S last week & I had them in a H&M bag. My friend who was with me was beside herself at the perceived faux par!. I have no shame

Forgotthespuds · 21/04/2022 07:21

*Faux pas 😳

Iwantmyoldnameback · 21/04/2022 07:30

I don't care but I did notice I had a Lidl bag in Waitrose, I thought it was funny as it was the opposite of what many people do.

I remember when plastic bags first were a thing, and back then you paid for them, I would turn them inside out to not provide free advertising.

I use big blue IKEA bags and have done for donkey's years. The bags themselves are over 20 years old and going strong.
I haven't been to IKEA for 16 years though. There's just not one near me.

the80sweregreat · 21/04/2022 08:56

I never do this, but I did look at one of my bags for life the other day and it was old 2012 Olympic one from Sainsbury's, which made me think about what a great time that was and how different the world was and how well that particular bag has lasted too.
I also still use a Christmas one!

Chaoslatte · 21/04/2022 08:58

I always bring bags that aren’t from that shop so they don’t think I’ve nicked them
