Amazon mystery

Today, I came home to an Amazon parcel that had been thrown over my gate.
No card through door. Just a random box, my name and address correct.
Inside was a really expensive sports tracking watch.
I've checked through my orders, definitely not there, I'd have noticed it going from bank!
So, now I have a dilemma, do I keep it, knowing that it's clearly an Amazon error, and they have more money than I could ever count and will resend to original recipient?
(God knows I could use the money)
Or do I do the right thing and send it back?
Part of me thinks the lord works in mysterious ways and this can go on eBay and get me a hundred quid
Part of me thinks send it back, just in case I bring bad luck to myself for being dishonest.
Honestly.....what would you do?

Is it your birthday soon? Could it have been sent by someone else as a gift?

Kinneddar · 19/04/2022 21:43

If you Google it you'll see its a scam. Amazon recommend you report it to them but they apparantly let you keep it.

Kinneddar · 19/04/2022 21:46

I cant get a link to work for some reason

Tell Amazon what has happened. Send them a photo of the box, label and contents.
If they want to pick it up they can. Don’t offer to return it yourself.
I doubt they will bother asking for it back but they will know that you didn’t order it and will investigate.

It could have a tracker on it, I’d consider chucking it.

Moochio · 19/04/2022 21:49

Sounds like a scam

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 19/04/2022 21:49

how did the scammer get your name and address? suggest changing your password on amazon, ebay, paypal etc

Moochio · 19/04/2022 21:50

@GeneLovesJezebel

Yes definitely don't use it
pinkstripeycat · 19/04/2022 21:51

Amazon delivery van ran in to my neighbours (up and over) garage door. Amazon insurance company are being really awkward about paying to replace the door. With all Amazon’s millions I would keep it!

CharityShopChic · 19/04/2022 21:52

Pretty rubbish scam, delivering someone an expensive watch and then what?

Hoping they return it to Amazon?

Heracles1000 · 19/04/2022 21:54

@mnahmnah

I'd check this before selling it!
Mybumlooksbig · 19/04/2022 21:57

Could have been a gift?

countvoncount · 19/04/2022 22:00

Not a gift, it's boxed up just like a normal Amazon parcel.
Why would a scammer send an expensive piece of kit?
There is a receipt in the box, says it's been paid by credit/debit card, an order reference number, but no name
What's more confusing is that the amount is in dollars?

Do you know anyone who lives in America?

countvoncount · 19/04/2022 22:05

Not a soul!
I'll try to upload pics, it just looks like a genuine item with the wrong name and address details

I've been sent a few things like this. It's called brushing. I contact Amazon, they tell me to keep it and log the details then I change my password but so far it has made no difference. I've had everything from high end beauty products to 20 year old DVDs. I tend to bin or give away to someone who knows the backstory. I have given books to charity.

PangolinPie · 19/04/2022 22:08

Do you have any other payment cards linked to your amazon account? Your partner's for example? It sounds like someone has hacked your amazon account and used someone else's card to pay but the item has ended up coming to you in "error", instead of the hacker.

surreygirl1987 · 19/04/2022 22:09

Ooh interesting! I'd definitely keep it... but I'd be wary about linking it up to phone etc in case of tracking and ability to have and steal data.

tkwal · 19/04/2022 22:10

Scam. They probably used a stolen card , got your details somehow ( like answering some of the stupid puzzles you have to register for) and sent this to you hoping that in trying to return it you will give them further details

OnaBegonia · 19/04/2022 22:12

Amazon parcels don't contain any paperwork just the item.

Jaxhog · 19/04/2022 22:13

This is what Amazon says you should do:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?tag=mumsnetforu03-21&nodeId=G33XVXQPUV79Z2ZC

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 19/04/2022 22:13

So the scam is to write fake reviews that look like verified purchases. So they send any old random an item and then write 5* fake reviews that makes the seller look genuine and highly rated and can then switch to selling fake goods or cheap imports or whatever and scam buyers with good reviews.

countvoncount · 19/04/2022 22:13

How strange, I've changed Amazon password, there is only my card registered, and to be fair I use Amazon a lot, so would see any strange activity
I can't see what a scammer could gain by sending a high value item?
Have I scammed a scammer?

Probably brushing.
It should be fine to use if it appears brand new but maybe do a factory reset.
