Amazon mystery

countvoncount · 19/04/2022 21:35

Today, I came home to an Amazon parcel that had been thrown over my gate.
No card through door. Just a random box, my name and address correct.
Inside was a really expensive sports tracking watch.
I've checked through my orders, definitely not there, I'd have noticed it going from bank!
So, now I have a dilemma, do I keep it, knowing that it's clearly an Amazon error, and they have more money than I could ever count and will resend to original recipient?
(God knows I could use the money)
Or do I do the right thing and send it back?
Part of me thinks the lord works in mysterious ways and this can go on eBay and get me a hundred quid
Part of me thinks send it back, just in case I bring bad luck to myself for being dishonest.
Honestly.....what would you do?

I think if you contact Amazon to return it and explain what happened, they will say just keep it.

Talking from experience, although it was a £20 item

Bellagio40 · 19/04/2022 22:16

It’s called brushing. It’s a scam because it is their product and they can now write a 5 star review of it using your details as a “verified purchaser”

countvoncount · 19/04/2022 22:18

But it's not showing on my order history at all?
Literally just appeared in my garden, no trace of it anywhere other than the label stuck to it

I heard of an Amazon scam last year whereby a supposed delivery driver comes to your property a while after delivery and claims it was a mistake then they take it from you.

They get the goods for free as the original payment was fraudulently made.
Tended to happen with high end goods.

Booboobagins · 19/04/2022 22:29

Call them, tell them. I def hate picking up money or finding things. They just mean I'm going to loose more if I pick something up and keep it...

brightonroundthecross · 19/04/2022 22:32

Maybe a friend of your has your address in their Amazon address book and sent it to you by mistake? Have you ever received a gift via Amazon before?

IcedOatLatte · 19/04/2022 22:35

@tkwal

Scam. They probably used a stolen card , got your details somehow ( like answering some of the stupid puzzles you have to register for) and sent this to you hoping that in trying to return it you will give them further details
Wo do you mean by “they”? The only person you'd ring to return it would be amazon who have all your details anyway.

I can't see how any kind ofscam would work

As many others have said this is a well known thing albeit a odd one to understadnd given the random stuff that gets sent out. I've had a parcel, I put it in the charity bag iirc

Szyz2020 · 19/04/2022 22:41

I had this recently, thought it was a brushing scam. Amazon were beyond useless and couldn’t seem to understand I hadn’t ordered the items (3 parcels becoming increasingly valuable).

They maintained they had been ordered by me, or “perhaps a family member such as a child at boarding school with access to your account” Confused

Then I got my credit card statement and turns out that I had been charged for all the items. Even more tedious to then prove that I hadn’t ordered the items. Amazon could see order details on “my” account but I couldn’t.

I did get the money back from my credit card provider but had to cancel my card and deleted all payment details from Amazon. Trying to prove that I hadn’t ordered items that had been charged to my card and then delivered to me was very difficult.

I still don’t know what the scam entailed as
my money was used to send parcels to me, that I then binned as Amazon said not to bother returning them. Perhaps I was supposed to return them and the money would have been diverted to another card. 🤷🏻‍♀️

LeastofLeicester · 19/04/2022 22:42

MiL had this a few weeks back. Someone turned up shortly after to say they'd delivered the wrong parcel. They'd somehow got her name and address and opened an account in her name. So they collect the parcel, keep the expensive items, but never pay the bill because its in your name. (If amazon maybe the prime credit card?)

Check your credit score and keep checking it for a good few months.

Redglitter · 19/04/2022 22:44

I can't see what a scammer could gain by sending a high value item

If you Google it as a pp suggested you'll see why. It's called brushing

BadNomad · 19/04/2022 22:57

I had this once. Received an item I hadn't ordered, no record of it on my account. I chatted to CS on their app and they said it was their error. Wrong label on the box just. Told me I could keep or gift the item. It was a lot cheaper than a watch though.

Booklover3 · 19/04/2022 22:59

I’d give Amazon a ring and check your credit score

gamerchick · 19/04/2022 23:02

@countvoncount

Not a gift, it's boxed up just like a normal Amazon parcel. Why would a scammer send an expensive piece of kit? There is a receipt in the box, says it's been paid by credit/debit card, an order reference number, but no name What's more confusing is that the amount is in dollars?
Fake reviews.

Let amazon know. They'll want some codes off the box from you but you'll be allowed to keep it

countvoncount · 19/04/2022 23:06

Ok so I just called Amazon, spoke to a very nice fellow who asked for a few details from the box, confirmed that it wasn't showing on my account and that my password had been changed and two step verification was active
He sent an email to me saying I do not need to return and to report anything further should it happen
I'll keep a super close eye on my account and banking, but feel reassured that it was an error, and dare I say my conscience is clear to put the watch on eBay!

Still all very odd!
If it was a dog toy or something daft I could understand it!

momlog20 · 19/04/2022 23:22

Keep it if you want it if not I'd be flogging it. Amazon won't care a toss, it had your name and address so Grin and don't worry about the person who actually ordered it, once it doesn't arrive for them Amazon will send them another anyway

Redglitter · 19/04/2022 23:34

Good result you can flog it with a clear conscience 😊

sst1234 · 19/04/2022 23:39

@pinkstripeycat

Amazon delivery van ran in to my neighbours (up and over) garage door. Amazon insurance company are being really awkward about paying to replace the door. With all Amazon’s millions I would keep it!
Amazon don’t own delivery vans. So that logic doesn’t work.
JulesRimetStillGleaming · 20/04/2022 06:57

Yes they do. They're branded with Amazon Prime. I drove along the M4 a week or so ago and saw about 6.

That sounds quite plausible, thanks for the heads up

Amazon have their own fleet. I'm amazed you haven't seen one.

What's up with this new format? Have we gone back in time?

Rosebuud · 20/04/2022 07:25

Op this happened to me once, it was from Amazon global, the address label had come off another package that was for me, and attached to mine, it happens very rarely in the printing and application.

Id not worry, it’s not a scam, just an error.

Soresoresore · 20/04/2022 07:55

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 20/04/2022 06:57

Are they the vans going from the main warehouse to where local couriers pick up?

Could be wrong but actual delivery drivers round here all seem to have their own van (not branded).

IcedOatLatte · 20/04/2022 09:49

That probably just means that round here surprisingly doesn't equal the whole country is the same. Have you really never seen an Amazon branded van? Round here sounds like back of beyond.😀

ZerotwoZero · 20/04/2022 09:56

OP its possible that this has been ordered with a hacked account or stolen card and your details have been entered as the delivery address.
If any one comes around claiming to have had a parcel delivered wrong to your address refuse.

I know some one this has happened to, please phone amazon and let them know, they will more than likely let you keep the goods. But do not give it away if some one comes to ask for it.
