Have your tipping habits changed with the rising cost of living?

Have you found yourself having to think more carefully about tipping - cabs, hairdressers, deliveroo etc now that the cost of things are going up?

I do a little ‘roo-ing’ on the side, and I’ve found that despite some of the orders I’ve been doing being insanely ridiculous - huge shops, long distances by bicycle, working out to way less than minimum wage, I’ve been getting very, very few tips.

I’ve always personally tipped when on the other side of the transaction - and still would - but times are getting tighter and wondering if this is one of the first things to go?

@Honestopinion23

This is so offensive, especially the bit about the retreat and having experience of the trials and tribulations of others. All I will say is that you should be ashamed of yourself talking like that. Poverty is not a joke or an experience or a cosplay. I appreciate that you’re probably just doing this to wind people up but for many people this is the reality, day in day out. And no, some rich fuck going on a bike ride can never ever know what that is like.
That was obviously facetious because everyone was claiming bullshit.

I absolutely hate the tipping culture. Now that a minimum wage is guaranteed there is no need.

It's not guaranteed!!! Not in the gig economy.

Not a reply to you - but People chastising me seem to not be able to understand I'm highlighting things that people clearly aren't aware of.

Well this is an odd thread.

If I was wealthy enough to use my spare time for good, I'd do voluntary work. But anyway.

I avoid Deliveroo and other service industry apps because they are expensive to use and the staff are treated appallingly.

Since the first lockdown our takeaway rate has much reduced. I'd rather go and collect it. We don't go out half as much as we used to. If we do go out, we take food with us. It's saved us a lot of money.

Restaurants are now only a special treat. I round up to the nearest 5 or 0, and only in cash.

If I am in a bind and need to use a black taxi I round up. I never use Uber et al.

I never tip the hairdressers (costs a bomb already, and I only go 2-3 times a year)

Prices are going up so we cut our cloth accordingly.

If anything this thread has made me want to tip less now I’m thinking is the driver really a millionaire with a fitness bug?

Sparklesocks · 18/04/2022 10:05

OP as a wealthy bloke havent you got better things to do than tediously mansplain the gig economy to us silly womenfolk?

LampLighter414 · 18/04/2022 10:09

I tip in restaurants where service has been good. However often when handed the card machine they don't it in a way where I have the option to add to it, so if so we'll that's their choice not to ask for one

Outside of restaurants I don't tip. Things like deliveroo should be priced appropriately to ensure the drivers get a reasonable rate of pay and not be dependent on the generosity of customers.

Anecdotally I know a couple people who do uber eats. One is female, she gets a lot of tips off the back of her name presumably, a lot more than the guy said he would usually get. Given that the tip doesn't result in your food coming faster or warmer too, I would rather the price just was increased by a quid or two and they both got the same.

Why do you assume OP is male? I don’t think they’ve said they are?
Sparklesocks · 18/04/2022 11:32

@LittleBearPad he says he is in previous posts

BungleandGeorge · 18/04/2022 12:16

I suppose the problem is if people stop using deliveroo because they believe it’s exploitative or because they don’t feel they can afford a tip on top of the delivery charge there will be no work. I’m pretty sure that most of the delivery people do actually need the money..

LegMeChicken · 18/04/2022 15:51

@SwanBuster

if my post makes some of you think about the reality for those food delivery couriers, spread the word and tip them then as far as I can see my efforts have had a positive effect.
Nah mate it’s done the opposite
LegMeChicken · 18/04/2022 15:56

Also I almost split my coffee laughing at the Ayuhusca retreat, are you for real? Meanwhile IRL plenty of people have empathy without going to such lengths.

Deliveroo workers have plenty of other job options (where I live anyway). I won’t be sad if they’re so lowly paid that they quit, my life will be just fine without deliveries.

Care workers, teachers OTOH…

SwanBuster · 18/04/2022 16:12

What a disgraceful couple of posts. So because I'm doing the 'roo for exercise, you'll punish everyone else?!

If you're not happy with the pay and conditions do what the Uber drivers did. Challenge it in court. Or would that mean you would have to spend some of your own money instead of berating others for not spending theirs?

Yeah OP. Or start a movement uniting the workers! Actually do something useful with your life instead of virtue signalling on an online forum
Honestopinion23 · 18/04/2022 16:54

If you gave a shit about poor workers, you’d be ordering from them, paying them large tips. Instead, you are taking their work from them that you don’t need and crowing about getting £2 to spend at McDonalds while earning a 6 figure salary.

Helpwithbills · 18/04/2022 16:59

Just find it awkward now as I never have cash for a tip for delivery drivers.
