Have you found yourself having to think more carefully about tipping - cabs, hairdressers, deliveroo etc now that the cost of things are going up?

I do a little ‘roo-ing’ on the side, and I’ve found that despite some of the orders I’ve been doing being insanely ridiculous - huge shops, long distances by bicycle, working out to way less than minimum wage, I’ve been getting very, very few tips.

I’ve always personally tipped when on the other side of the transaction - and still would - but times are getting tighter and wondering if this is one of the first things to go?

I spent student years waitressing and I still don’t tip except a couple of quid

Moochio · 17/04/2022 22:14

Really?

So the business goes out of business because you don't use them??

If I'm tight for money that I can't afford the £1-2 tip then yes, am too tight for money for a takeaway. They are a luxury. I

RedSoloCup · 17/04/2022 22:15

I would definitely tip Deliveroo if I used them as they come to my work and it's a hard job, I tip most people though always hairdresser, waitress etc as long as the service is good!!

BungleandGeorge · 17/04/2022 22:21

I stopped tipping deliveries when I started paying on line by card, I used to for cash on delivery. Still tipping taxis, hairdresser, restaurants. Think I’ll cut back on restaurants as they’re all on at least minimum wage now so probably earning more than me!

BungleandGeorge · 17/04/2022 22:29

I’ve never used deliveroo, having read this I probably would top them as the pay sounds rubbish. I presume if the driver is employed by the restaurant they have to pay minimum wage and expenses

TimBoothseyes · 17/04/2022 22:35

I never have tipped.

Xmasbaby11 · 17/04/2022 22:44

I don't tip for takeaway being delivered- there's already a charge for this for my local places.

Fairislefandango · 17/04/2022 22:44

I tip in restaurants as I always have, but that's the onlytime I tip. I've never used Deliveroo, never get taxis etc.

AngelaRayner4PM · 17/04/2022 22:44

I'm buying less, tipping the same or maybe a bit more (but works out less money because buying less services). I would rather not buy something than not tip. IMO if you can't afford the gratuity you can't really afford the service.

Glamora · 17/04/2022 22:49

I disagree. I can afford to pay for the asked for price.

Menu states xxx meal is £15 including delivery
I pay £15 for my meal delivered.
They offered to supply the service for £15

If they want the delivery person to get more, put up the prices

pradavilla · 17/04/2022 23:07

I haven't made any changes. In fact if anything I used to tip £1 or so to takeaway delivery drivers but seeing as I order online a lot it seems a pittance to hand over £1 so I usually tip £2. Some folk very much expect it and don't even say thanks others are pleased and say thank you.

tttigress · 17/04/2022 23:13

If your delivery work comes out at leas than minimum wage, why not get a side job in McDonald's?

PlasticineMeg · 17/04/2022 23:16

What pisses me off about Uber Eats and Deliveroo is they charge a delivery fee, service fee then email you after to ask you to pay Bruce £5 for a tip. I’ve stopped using both services and only go with local places that employ their own drivers.

Imlovinglife · 17/04/2022 23:18

Bruce? Is he really called Bruce?
marvingale · 17/04/2022 23:25

I rarely tip. it encourages low wages. Employee should be compensated fairly and not relay on peoples good will.

Mojoj · 17/04/2022 23:32

What a shower of tightwads! If you can afford to order takeaway, what's an extra quid? Put your hand in your pocket ffs!

HollowTalk · 17/04/2022 23:43

I don't really tip anymore because I never have cash in the house. I haven't used cash for the last two years. In the past I would always tip about £2 for takeaway delivery. I would never tip e.g. a Tesco delivery and can't work out my own logic with that!

SwanBuster · 17/04/2022 23:44

Unless they’ve started mixing fliping Big Mac patty’s with spinning classes there wouldn’t be much point in my case.

I don't tip my hairdresser or nail tech as they own the business. I tip deliveroo drivers £2

Dreamstate · 18/04/2022 01:34

@Imlovinglife

No. Still zero.

Tell me the price you actually want and I'll decide whether to buy or not.

Don't tell me a lower number but expect me to add x% on my own initiative - and get uppity if I don't. No time or energy for games like that.

100% this. Set your prices to cover everything so I can make an informed decision. Dont expect me to think oh should I add more a tip, oohh how much. No no no. If you say it costs x much that's what it costs.

I don't tip anywhere, exception being restaurant adding service charge automatically...rather they just priced the food accordingly to be honest.

Why? Normalising tipping pushes the responsibility of wages away from the employer. As a former service staff I’m strongly opposed to it on moral grounds.

It’s ok to say ‘tip for exceptional service’… making it ‘extra’ but the moment it’s expected employers will take advantage.

LegMeChicken · 18/04/2022 01:50

Also - I don’t tip delivery drivers unless they’re on bikes and it’s raining.
I don’t see why they need to be paid extra for a service in particular when I don’t tip other similar staff like cashiers.

Boredoutmymind · 18/04/2022 01:51

I dont tip.
Its a silly American custom.

I hate it when restaurants add service charge on to the bill. Just increase the prices instead.

We have a minimum wage in this country and the employers should be paying the employees this.

We don't pay more than the bill at supermarkets, or cinema or anywhere else. Why do people think we should tip these businesses.
If anything we should tip the underpaid nurses and health care assistants. Not tipping someone because they brought a plate of food to you.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 18/04/2022 01:53

I'm in Oz, tipping isn't really a thing here, as the wages are already pretty decent. My son delivers sushi for a local restaurant, he gets around $22 per hour plus $2.50 for each delivery, and he gets a tip once in a blue moon.

That’s the way it SHOULD be. Just because something is a ‘luxury’ service , it’s not the customer’s job to ensure fair wages.
