Not to understand the hate for Emma Raducanu?

I really don’t get why she’s the object of so much derision? Ok she hasn’t achieved much since she won the US open and yes, a lot of the media hype WAS insane. But that wasn’t her fault and the mockery and schadenfreude from people online (Twitter, forums, news site comments etc) feels over the top.

Even her achievement in winning the US open is constantly belittled as an undeserved fluke. Maybe that’s true, I’m not a tennis expert so don’t have a clue. But I’m shocked by the glee so many people seem to be taking in her losses. It’s like she’s become a universal object of scorn.

There’s just something really unpleasant about it. It feels like it goes beyond the bit of negativity that all people in the public eye get at times. AIBU?

I don’t hate her at all!

I do think the media either love her or hate her depending on her performance, ethnicity etc and don’t realise she’s still technically a teenager and may act immaturely from time to time.

Gonnagetgoing · 18/04/2022 10:25

Emma is a particular favourite of mine as she lives very near where I live and also lives near where I was born and brought up. All the locals there are super proud of her!

Cherrysoup · 18/04/2022 10:30

Have seen no ‘hate’ for her and frankly, you sound like a red top paper with your ‘I feel sorry for the ‘hate’ ‘shite. It’s posts like this where nobody else has heard a word that start crap stories.

Why have you replied and bumped the thread then? 🙄

I'm sure 99.99% of the population have no strong feelings about her one way or the other.

I wasn't aware there was any "hate".

Rococococo · 18/04/2022 10:50

No, many of us are just 😳 at your vague posts with no examples of what you mean. We doubt your motivation, to be frank.

If you think I’m trolling, report the thread.

And what’s with the “we” and “us”? That reads rather suspiciously in itself, if “we’re” throwing insinuations around Wink

For some of them it's sheer nastiness, for others, I think they invest in these players when they have some success and it makes them feel good about themselves; if they have a poor run, that warm feeling goes and they take out all their disappointments in life, their anger and their bitterness on these poor young people. It's pathetic actually and I argue back a lot on SM but it's totally rife.

It’s such an odd mentality. The mean spiritedness is really depressing.

Theforest · 18/04/2022 10:55

There are a lot of derogatory comments about being a one hit wonder mainly from non tennis fans.

They have no idea how the tour works and how hard it is to build a career. No-one wins all the time. It's not type of sport.

LegMeChicken · 18/04/2022 10:57
@LegMeChicken- why is it relevant what school Emma went to? In any event, she didn’t go to “private” school but the same state grammar my DD is at, Newstead Wood. Same place Dina Asher-Smith went to.

Most successful people have encouraging parents who support their hobbies and talents from an early age.
Emma is very intelligent, international and speaks 3 languages. However, she is also a Bromley girl and grew up here and went to Bickley primary, a small lovely state primary in Bromley, which is in fact quite mixed both class and ethnicity wise.
Emma is very talented. beautiful, clever, and still very young. Some people are just jealous of her, it seems.
If you’d bothered to read my post properly you’d see that I was replying to another poster, who speculated that the hate was due to her being WC.
Which she definitely isn’t, unlike say Marcus Rashford.
I’m not sure why there’s been such focus on her heritage but other than that, and her age there’s nothing atypical about her, tennis player background wise.
She hasn’t gotten any extra hate compared to anybody else.

Nishkin · 18/04/2022 10:58

Did she finally win a match?

With all the modelling shoots, magazine interviews and red carpets she is doing amazingly well to even make it on court 😂😂

Good one..won't be surprised if English media says that..already started that blisters excuse in just finished match where she's los

Nishkin · 18/04/2022 10:58

Too a few minutes to find the above on Twitter- for those who bizarrely claim it doesn’t exist

Rococococo · 18/04/2022 10:59

Hi OP - you’re not going crazy. I have had no prior interest in Emma Radacanu but at a cursory look, most comment sections on articles about her are filled with gleeful negativity

That’s it, exactly. It’s the gleeful tone. Really horrid.

Does it make you feel good to say stuff like that? The mind boggles.

Rococococo · 18/04/2022 11:09

@koperteapot I think Nishkin was posting that as an example of the shittiness.

bellebeautifu1 · 18/04/2022 11:21

My adult DD and DH are tennis junkies, DD's on a tennis forum and apparantly there is a lot of hate for her on there so you do have a point OP.

You would think the British public would be grateful for a female player to win a slam, on the woman's side we are the worst grand slam nation in terms of slams won in recent decades, even the Aussies have done better than us despite their much smaller population.

Hausa · 18/04/2022 11:23

I feel that way about Dina Asher Smith. She is the fastest British woman in recorded history, stunningly beautiful and seems really lovely. Yet, the trolls find reasons to rip her to shreds.

But, this allegedly isn’t a racist country.

EarringsandLipstick · 18/04/2022 11:28

@SillySallySassySausage

But these are comments on a Daily Mail piece.

So DM vitriol doesn't count? Confused does it somehow hurt less when it comes out of their mouths fingers ? Are you actually shitting me? 🤣 ffs

That's right.

It doesn't count, in terms of how the OP phrased her initial post.

No-one with half a brain pays any heed to DM BTL comments. You don't need to read them, and they don't form part of regular commentary or discourse.

It's entirely different if there were collective pieces being written negatively about her, or regular Twitter threads, which usually do get picked up & reported on (eg JKR).

Most on this thread had no idea of this 'hate' and I imagine ER doesn't either.

As I said, show me a DM piece with no hateful BTL comments.

(And your posting style is so odd by the way)

You're behaving v oddly.

'we' and 'us' are plural terms which refer to the more than one poster that's disagreed with you. Which you commented on, and I was replying to 🤦🏻‍♀️

I didn't say you were trolling? I said I can see no point to your thread when you have repeatedly failed to substantiate your point.

GrouchyKiwi · 18/04/2022 11:42

Have a look at the comments whenever the WTA Facebook page makes a post about her. Such glee when she loses, from supposed tennis fans. (I mean, I assume they're tennis fans if they're following the WTA.)

LampLighter414 · 18/04/2022 11:43

Non white

Rococococo · 18/04/2022 11:48

@bellebeautifu1 yep other nations seem to take this kind of thing in their stride, as it were. I mean having a teenage GS champion who’s literally only just started on the tour would still be a big deal to the Aussies etc but nowhere near as much as it is to us. And the burden of expectation on the young player afterwards wouldn’t be anything like what Emma R’s having to deal with.

OP posts:
GrouchyKiwi · 18/04/2022 11:49

I wonder if Leyla Fernandez - similarly inconsistent since her run at the US Open last year - gets the same sorts of comments.

Rococococo · 18/04/2022 11:52

@Hausa I haven’t seen that but have no problem believing it. There are some people in the public eye, not just athletes, who seem to attract a level of scorn that goes beyond any reasonable critique of their skills or behaviour.

OP posts:
MillenialInDenial · 18/04/2022 11:57

The media like to do this thing to women, were if they're doing well they're admirable and championed but if they're seen to be doing not as well for the minutest of moments they're a failure, sparking a huge pile of hate comments for clicks on a sub-par article.
It's pretty disgusting to be honest she's so young and seems like a lovely person.
