Not to understand the hate for Emma Raducanu?

I really don’t get why she’s the object of so much derision? Ok she hasn’t achieved much since she won the US open and yes, a lot of the media hype WAS insane. But that wasn’t her fault and the mockery and schadenfreude from people online (Twitter, forums, news site comments etc) feels over the top.

Even her achievement in winning the US open is constantly belittled as an undeserved fluke. Maybe that’s true, I’m not a tennis expert so don’t have a clue. But I’m shocked by the glee so many people seem to be taking in her losses. It’s like she’s become a universal object of scorn.

There’s just something really unpleasant about it. It feels like it goes beyond the bit of negativity that all people in the public eye get at times. AIBU?

I haven’t seen any hate, I’ve thought she’s a great player and has a big future ahead. She seems really nice too.

I don’t follow any specific tennis social media, just general news and MN.

Fishwishy · 17/04/2022 20:18

Not really seen any hate more ambivalence especially over her recent performances. I was up that evening cheering on her that evening. That's said the usual suspects have taken it upon themselves to use the race and female element to point score.

nosyupnorth · 17/04/2022 20:46

I haven't seen any hate. Maybe you need to look at your news sources or who you are engaging with on social media that is creating such a hateful atmosphere.

Thank you. I will try to do better 🙏🏻

Yeah, no one knows what you are talking about. Why do you hate her? I presume that is what you're projecting?

HavingA · 17/04/2022 21:29

I'm a fan!

GrouchyKiwi · 17/04/2022 21:30

So because you've not seen anyone making hateful comments the OP is projecting? Hmm

Go to BBC Sport on Facebook and look at the comments on any article about Raducanu. Plenty of awful stuff there.

Rococococo · 17/04/2022 21:31

Yeah, no one knows what you are talking about. Why do you hate her? I presume that is what you're projecting?

I genuinely don’t understand this.

Yes it’s abundantly clear that no one on MN agrees with me 🤷‍♀️ That’s fine. Why on earth would this mean that I’m somehow not posting in good faith though? I assume that’s what you’re getting at.

OP posts:
starlingdarling · 17/04/2022 21:32

Surprised that nobody else has seen it. I've seen plenty of nasty comments about her lately.

GreenLunchBox · 17/04/2022 21:34

I've not seen any hate but it's probably jealousy

GreenLunchBox · 17/04/2022 21:36

There probably is racism to it too.

Quincythequince · 17/04/2022 21:39

What hate?
To what specifically are you referring OP?

Katya213 · 17/04/2022 21:51

I didn’t know people disliked her. Poor girl trying to get on in life.

EyePeeEh · 17/04/2022 21:55

I don’t follow tennis but you see similar with English footballers all the time.

VivienneDelacroix · 17/04/2022 21:57

@urbanbuddha

She's young, talented, attractive. And female. That's what makes her a target.
This.
Rococococo · 17/04/2022 21:58

I outlined it in my original post. I can’t be arsed to trawl Twitter, sports sites, news sites etc for screenshots to present you with but there are hundreds of examples out there.

EarringsandLipstick · 17/04/2022 23:10

I can’t be arsed

See, if you're going to start a thread all about the 'hate' you've seen heaped upon a particular individual, it makes sense to at least indicate the nature of this 'hate', and perhaps include some examples.

All your OP said was

the mockery and schadenfreude from people online

Which doesn't give a lot of info.

I'm not doubting it - I haven't seen it tho. I find it really surprising that in the face of so many questions, you haven't provided any more context.

And yet so many here haven’t a clue what you’re on about 🤷🏼‍♀️

Maybe find a better way to spend your free time OP.

The library, a decent novel, a dictionary perhaps.

EyePeeEh · 17/04/2022 23:42

Hi OP - you’re not going crazy. I have had no prior interest in Emma Radacanu but at a cursory look, most comment sections on articles about her are filled with gleeful negativity.

Rococococo · 18/04/2022 00:11

You could say that to pretty much anyone who’s posting any thread on MN. Why have you singled mine out in particular for this patronising piece of advice?

Thank you. Some of these responses are strange. NOT because they disagree with me, it’s more the weirdly condescending tone of them.

Hiphopfrogger · 18/04/2022 00:21

Ah, good old @Quincythequince has made it over to this thread too! Why so combative tonight, Quince? Maybe YOU need a new hobby! This one seems to be stressing you out a lot.

UnadulteratedCat · 18/04/2022 00:22

From what I’ve seen it’s Tall Poppy Syndrome. She has done well to get where she is and her achievements set her apart so as soon as they can cut her down they are savage.

Because you detailed an assertion, and then when questioned on it, refused to say any more

Why post If you won’t answer questions. Someone else has also pointed this out too.

And yes, anyone else could be given this advice, but most who post here aren’t so lazy as to rebuff questions about their post out of hand.

If you won’t engage regarding a post you started, maybe better to use your inquisitive time a little better. Both novel and dictionary reading would be ideal.
