Not to understand the hate for Emma Raducanu?

I really don’t get why she’s the object of so much derision? Ok she hasn’t achieved much since she won the US open and yes, a lot of the media hype WAS insane. But that wasn’t her fault and the mockery and schadenfreude from people online (Twitter, forums, news site comments etc) feels over the top.

Even her achievement in winning the US open is constantly belittled as an undeserved fluke. Maybe that’s true, I’m not a tennis expert so don’t have a clue. But I’m shocked by the glee so many people seem to be taking in her losses. It’s like she’s become a universal object of scorn.

There’s just something really unpleasant about it. It feels like it goes beyond the bit of negativity that all people in the public eye get at times. AIBU?

What utter bollocks Quincythequince. You’re quite clearly one of those posters who enjoy coming onto a thread where there isn’t much support for the OP, to administer a kicking safe in the knowledge that there won’t be much pushback against you.

It’s cowardly and witless, as you probably know.

I won’t be responding to you again.

No Rococococo I’m not clearly anything.

And I can and will defend and explain anything I’ve posted; something you’re clearly not prepared to do.

EyePeeEh · 18/04/2022 00:51

Both novel and dictionary reading would be ideal.
This was rude, unhelpful and witless the first time you posted it, repetition isn’t likely to improve matters.

I don’t know why you’ve decided to be so abrasive but, as you’re adding nothing to the thread other than an undeserved sense of superiority, maybe you could follow your own advice and find something else to do?

And a most pitiful non sequitur you’ve just written!

I could of course do that. But I’m going to stay on here and post for now. Free will and all that.

Where is the media hate?

Quincythequince · 18/04/2022 00:55

And it was repeated simply by way of explanation for the question it’s use the first time. Not my fault that it took a little longer to sink in.

SillySallySassySausage · 18/04/2022 00:57

Christ, you could argue with your reflection

I can barely follow this gibberish. Try following your own advice.

Quincythequince · 18/04/2022 01:02

Nobody is asking you to IPA

timestheyarechanging · 18/04/2022 01:26

My nephew taught her at school - lovely girl apparently, very clever. Haven't seen any hate though (thankfully) .

LegMeChicken · 18/04/2022 02:01

@MumstedInadequate

She's young, non white, working class origins, female...and she won something against the odds and not much since apparently?

That's pretty much a perfect set up for online derision and yes, hate.

Hmm Quite the opposite, her parents are investment bankers, private school all the way and live in a leafy London suburb.

An example of the privileged non-British people that most ‘diversity’ initiatives are filled with nowadays.

Can’t complain, it’s certainly benefitted me :)

I don’t see any hate against her OP, you’re reading too much into things

StrongerOrWeaker · 18/04/2022 03:44

I have just typed her name in news and couldn't see anything bad. It would be helpful if you gave some examples....or did you mean people commenting about articles?

Yellownightmare · 18/04/2022 04:53

There's a lot of this across many sports, and different parts of life. Some very sad people like to bring others down or hate on them to a disgusting degree. I follow both football and tennis and some people are absolutely vicious towards young players, even when they're clearly doing their best.

For some of them it's sheer nastiness, for others, I think they invest in these players when they have some success and it makes them feel good about themselves; if they have a poor run, that warm feeling goes and they take out all their disappointments in life, their anger and their bitterness on these poor young people. It's pathetic actually and I argue back a lot on SM but it's totally rife.

They totally ignore any facts like whether the player is suffering injuries or has had a recent bereavement or (in tennis) is playing on a different surface etc.

Nishkin · 18/04/2022 09:05

@Quincythequince if you do some research you will see the comments online that @Rococococo is referring to.

Tennis twitter a good place to start- some hateful comments on there.

HTH

EarringsandLipstick · 18/04/2022 09:16

NOT because they disagree with me, it’s more the weirdly condescending tone of them.

No, many of us are just 😳 at your vague posts with no examples of what you mean. We doubt your motivation, to be frank.

SallyWD · 18/04/2022 09:19

I had no idea about this hate. I thought everyone loved her!

EarringsandLipstick · 18/04/2022 09:20

Because you detailed an assertion, and then when questioned on it, refused to say any more

Exactly. I'm with Quince here (& liked the 'a library, a book, the dictionary' connect!)

@LegMeChicken- why is it relevant what school Emma went to? In any event, she didn’t go to “private” school but the same state grammar my DD is at, Newstead Wood. Same place Dina Asher-Smith went to.

Most successful people have encouraging parents who support their hobbies and talents from an early age.
Emma is very intelligent, international and speaks 3 languages. However, she is also a Bromley girl and grew up here and went to Bickley primary, a small lovely state primary in Bromley, which is in fact quite mixed both class and ethnicity wise.
Emma is very talented. beautiful, clever, and still very young. Some people are just jealous of her, it seems.

starlingdarling · 18/04/2022 09:54

There was criticism about her sponsorships affecting her performance: amp.theguardian.com/sport/2022/mar/26/emma-raducanu-hits-out-at-unfair-criticism-of-sponsorship-deals

I'm too lazy to scroll through Twitter so I went on the daily Mail to find a concentrated version of what I've seen on there (Twitter has some supportive people, apparently the DM does not). These were on a story about the LTA CEO saying she faces a tough year at Wimbledon.

OverByYer · 18/04/2022 09:56

I haven’t noticed any hate for her.

EarringsandLipstick · 18/04/2022 10:12

But these are comments on a Daily Mail piece.

Not op-eds, articles or mainstream media coverage. I've seen nothing on Twitter.

I imagine you couldn't go on any article in the Daily Mail and not see 'hate' in the comments.

That's a pretty different proposition to OP's vague posts on 'all the hate' she is getting.

SillySallySassySausage · 18/04/2022 10:18

But these are comments on a Daily Mail piece.

So DM vitriol doesn't count? Confused does it somehow hurt less when it comes out of their mouths fingers ? Are you actually shitting me? 🤣 ffs

x2boys · 18/04/2022 10:22

I have not seen any hate for her ,but even if she never wins another open she's achieved far more than most British players ever do and she's still very young .
