AIBU to prefer plain ordinary hot cross buns?

I've tried them all, usually because they have a yellow sticker on them, and I've come to the conclusion that "luxury" hot cross buns are not nearly as good as regular boring ones. (I like trying new versions of things, but sometimes discover that the original is nicest.)

Things I do not want in my hot cross buns:

  • chocolate (including cocoa, chocolate chunks, cocoa liquor, white chocolate, and all variations therof)
  • salted caramel
  • coffee
  • incongruous fruit
  • all other incongruous things that I have wiped from my memory in self-preservation

Bramley apples and lemon can just about squeak in, but not accompanied by cinnamon or Earl Grey or anything fancy.

If you want a chocolate chip bread, have at it! But don't slap a cross on it and call it a hot cross bun.

I love a classic Raisin/sultana and cinnamon. They are always best (although the cheese and marmite ones were good, I wouldn't call them a HCB.

@TheUnexpectedPickle

I just remembered!

When the weird flavours first became a thing, my grandad bought home a pack (I think they were chocolate orange but this story has been told so many times by my family that the flavor may have changed)

My nan was horrified, made him take them back and told him to "have some respect for Jesus" 😆

I love your Nan Grin

I agree, an original HCB can’t be beaten.

Coralblimey · 17/04/2022 19:10

Give me wholemeal and I’d buy them by tonne for breakfast food for the kids, all the pissing about with chocolate and stupid flavours leaves me dead.

Canonisation right there.

YANBU although I do kind of want to try the Marmite ones.

WildOnce · 17/04/2022 19:30

Yes! Sainsbury’s chocolate and orange ones are fucking rancid. DH made me one up without telling me they were ‘fancy’. A horrible surprise.

RinklyRomaine · 17/04/2022 20:36

Yanbu. The chocolate ones are minging and I love chocolate. It's just not right. Apart from the very berry ones from Lidl that DH bought which are so magnificent toasted with salted butter I had to tell him not to get any more as they were INHALED.

JoanWilderbeast · 17/04/2022 20:42

Hot Cross Buns in general have yellow stickers on them because they don't seem to be popular anymore, hence all the reboots. I like them, but my toaster doesn't, lol.

JellyfishandShells · 17/04/2022 20:45

My DH brought home apple ones from Lidl - smelt like cider when opened then tasted of absolute nothing at all.

buckleten · 17/04/2022 20:45

M&S chocolate ones, toasted, with a little clotted cream... wow!

Girlmumdogmumboymum · 17/04/2022 20:52

I agree, the exception is M&S richly fruited, they're just a little more fruity than everywhere else but absolutely gorgeous!

bettybyebye · 17/04/2022 21:02

Traditional is best but I am a fan of different fruity flavours - M&S Bradley apple and Aldi rhubarb and custard are particular faves.
Breakfast this morning was M&S extremely cheesy HCB toasted with salted butter with bacon - delicious! 😋
