AIBU to prefer plain ordinary hot cross buns?

I've tried them all, usually because they have a yellow sticker on them, and I've come to the conclusion that "luxury" hot cross buns are not nearly as good as regular boring ones. (I like trying new versions of things, but sometimes discover that the original is nicest.)

Things I do not want in my hot cross buns:

  • chocolate (including cocoa, chocolate chunks, cocoa liquor, white chocolate, and all variations therof)
  • salted caramel
  • coffee
  • incongruous fruit
  • all other incongruous things that I have wiped from my memory in self-preservation

Bramley apples and lemon can just about squeak in, but not accompanied by cinnamon or Earl Grey or anything fancy.

If you want a chocolate chip bread, have at it! But don't slap a cross on it and call it a hot cross bun.

Co-op had Masala and Chili ones! Confused

CounsellorTroi · 17/04/2022 11:39

YANBU. I Love cheese but not in a hcb.

AprilShortbread · 17/04/2022 11:43

Op I was only telling my children this the other day.
I hope they pay attention and learn this to help them navigate adult life!😂

AprilShortbread · 17/04/2022 11:44

There's a reason the weird flavours are in the reduced section.

Wiglio · 17/04/2022 11:44

YANBU, I bought apple and cinnamon by mistake, v disappointed

My DH bought some of those. Caramelised onion, sultana and masala spices. Shock.

They haven't been opened yet.

AprilShortbread · 17/04/2022 11:48

Yes it's changed from an easy, automatic purchase to a careful scrutiny of labels.
My eyes aren't up to the job and it took my school-holiday teen to point out what was on the label of the alleged "hot cross buns."

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 17/04/2022 11:49

Just normal supermarket hot cross buns are fine. All the finest and extra special ones are just sickly, and the salted caramel ones I tried were an abomination.

Sexnotgender · 17/04/2022 11:50

Dried fruit is absolutely revolting, so I for one am glad I can have a hot cross bun without any disgusting dried out fruit in it.

Divebar2021 · 17/04/2022 11:54

They’re not ordinary or boring they’re classic.

MrsMAgain · 17/04/2022 11:58

We do try one or two different flavours in the run up to Easter because the DC like them and we've had some as gifts. We all liked the Waitrose Wholemeal and their Lemon and White Chocolate too, and Aldi Rhubarb and Custard. The Waitrose Chocolate were nice, but just like little chocolate cakes really.

But at Easter, it really has to be traditional Hot Cross Buns only.

serenghetti2011 · 17/04/2022 12:04

I like a hot cross bun too just as they are meant to be. Original. I always toast them though but boyfriend says no they are better cold with jam.

MrsMAgain · 17/04/2022 12:10

With jam?!

Easter Shock

LTB.

KirstenBlest · 17/04/2022 12:13

Not much of a HCB eater, but the traditional ones are fine, and anything else is an abomination

MasterBeth · 17/04/2022 12:17

I mostly agree. I do think that the very cheapest are not always the best e.g. the slightly premium Aldi ones are really good. But the fancy M&S ones have too much fruit and don’t get me started on chocolate or salted caramel “hot cross buns”.

DaffodilsandCoffee · 17/04/2022 12:26

@Startuplife

M&S’s marmite and cheese ones are incredible. I’m on a diet so have to stop myself from buying them because I have zero will power not to eat all 4 in one go Blush
I made breakfast sandwiches with these, fried eggs, wilted spinach and chutney this morning.

Not too fond of standard hot cross buns so the different flavours becoming normal is great because I get to be Eastery still.

Riverlee · 17/04/2022 12:42

Traditional ones all the way, best slightly warmed with butter. Yummy.

NannyR · 17/04/2022 12:46

I love the traditional ones best too, toasted with proper salted butter. We had some strawberry and cream flavoured ones from Aldi at work the other day and they were revolting.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 17/04/2022 12:50

The only acceptable combination of fruit and chocolate is the chocolate orange.

I like my hot cross buns unadulterated.

Fizbosshoes · 17/04/2022 12:53

I saw lots of rogue flavour HCB in the reduced trolley at Waitrose. I'm far too mean to buy them full price so was hoping there might be some normal ones there (or bramley apple - I can cope with that) but the only reduced ones were wholemeal (I know that's technically not a different flavour but probably like eating a boulder) or citrus/lemon iirc. It was a no from me.

Alightjacket · 17/04/2022 12:58

I agree. The M&S marmite ones and the ASDA extra special St Clements ones are amazing though! But I always go back to the classic hot cross bun!

Floralnomad · 17/04/2022 13:00

We really disliked the marmite ones but the other M and S cheese ones are absolutely fabulous , my husband has been having them for lunch for weeks . I have been having one toasted with a poached egg and it’s excellent .

myfanwybygaslight · 17/04/2022 13:05

Yes, traditional ones here too. Though DH picked up some Coop gluten free ones by mistake the other week, and I felt very sorry for anyone who has to eat them because of gluten intolerance - it was like eating cardboard!

Hurstlandshome · 17/04/2022 13:08

Finally someone said it! Couldn't agree more. Even slight deviations from the originals spoil them for me!

countrygirl99 · 17/04/2022 13:11

I wanted some to take up to take to my mum's last weekend. Shelves full of the weird flavours left but I managed to find 1 pack of normal that had got behind some scones.
