AIBU to prefer plain ordinary hot cross buns?

I've tried them all, usually because they have a yellow sticker on them, and I've come to the conclusion that "luxury" hot cross buns are not nearly as good as regular boring ones. (I like trying new versions of things, but sometimes discover that the original is nicest.)

Things I do not want in my hot cross buns:

  • chocolate (including cocoa, chocolate chunks, cocoa liquor, white chocolate, and all variations therof)
  • salted caramel
  • coffee
  • incongruous fruit
  • all other incongruous things that I have wiped from my memory in self-preservation

Bramley apples and lemon can just about squeak in, but not accompanied by cinnamon or Earl Grey or anything fancy.

If you want a chocolate chip bread, have at it! But don't slap a cross on it and call it a hot cross bun.

M&S’s marmite and cheese ones are incredible. I’m on a diet so have to stop myself from buying them because I have zero will power not to eat all 4 in one go Blush

Bramley apple hot cross buns are the food of the gods.

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/04/2022 14:39

I love normal ones

But M&S salted caramel ones & blond chocolate are just delicious

InvisibleDragon · 17/04/2022 14:47

See also: chocolate chip scones.

howardmoonseyebrow · 17/04/2022 15:12

Every time I go to Aldi the ‘normal’ ones are all gone and the weird flavours are left , yanbu!

Mmmmdanone · 17/04/2022 15:15

I got fooled by an onion and chilli "hot cross bun" recently. Looked like a HCB so I bit into it looking forward to that sweet HCB hit. I was nearly sick 😫

Toddlerteaplease · 17/04/2022 15:17

Not keen on M&S cheese or cheese and marmite. But their chocolate ones are divine.

EastHer · 17/04/2022 15:19

M&S luxury ones are my fave. So juicy!

I quite like the ones with apple in them, but I agree - a big fat no to chocolate, salted caramel or anything ‘quirky’.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 17/04/2022 15:20

Can’t be doing with all the weird & wonderful flavours! Traditional every time, toasted & thickly buttered. Yum.

MindTheGapMoveAlong · 17/04/2022 15:22

It’s sacrilege. DH bought cheesey CHEESE 🤢🤢🤢hot cross buns from a well known high street retailer. When challenged, he claimed that the shop was advertising the said cheese monstrosities as ‘delicious with bacon for Easter Sunday breakfast.’ DH doesn’t eat bacon. And he’s Jewish, so …HmmStill, I suppose if you’ve had to eat horseradish and salty water parsley every Easter, culturally misappropriating a hot cross bun probably counts as a minor transgression 😂

No. Just NO, NO, NO.
Genevieva · 17/04/2022 16:31

I accidentally bought some ‘masala’ and something flavoured buns this year. They had a slight green chilli flavour with raisins. Grim!

Yes - classic hot cross buns for me too.

Thedogscollar · 17/04/2022 16:33

YANBU.
I've just had an apple and cinnamon bun.
Seriously unimpressed😩

I picked up the free Tesco magazine. It had a recipe for HC buns filled with bacon, fried egg etc. Couldn't believe my eyes.
DarlingCoffee · 17/04/2022 16:42

The coffee flavoured ones from Waitrose were truly vile, I’m with you OP!

CocoLoco123 · 17/04/2022 16:42

YABU. M&S chocolate hot cross buns are to die for.

DockOTheBay · 17/04/2022 16:48

YANBU. The chocolate ones are particularly weird. The chocolate just melts and goes all over the toaster and/or they burn before the bun is toasted, so then you have a flaccid half cooked bun. Are you supposed to put butter on a chocolate one because that seems wrong as well.
The worst ones I've tried were white chocolate and raspberry.

TheDogsMother · 17/04/2022 16:51

YANBU. I wish they would stop messing with the originals which are quite lovely as they are. We get all this nonsense at Christmas with mince pies.

Yes!!!! Oh my goodness yes!!!!!

I put what I thought was a normal hot cross bun in the toaster at work yesterday, took a big bite and the fucker was chocolate 😡

Gutted.

Then my work partner made toast, the toaser started smoking and set the fire alarm off so I can only assume some of the stealth chocolate melted into the toasting bit. We had to track a manager down to reset the fire alarm which took ages (and was embarrassing!) All because of a stealthy chocolate fucker.

peachgreen · 17/04/2022 16:55

I mostly agree (but then I don't think chocolate chips belong in anything) BUT the M&S apple ones are amazing. Or at least they used to be, I haven't had them in years.

SamMil · 17/04/2022 16:56

You are completely correct!! Why mess

I've found it quite hard to buy normal hot cross buns this year because all the shelf space is taken up with the crazy flavours and all the normal ones are sold out!

Husband bought 2 packs of salted caramel & chocolate from Tesco yesterday not realising. We had them this morning and we were both very disappointed Confused bleurgh!

TheUnexpectedPickle · 17/04/2022 16:59

@Akite

Well. I was completely in agreement until I tried Waitrose lemon and white chocolate ones. They are amazing! Even nicer than ordinary hot cross buns, dare I say. They aren't anything like HXBs though, they are light fluffy lemon buns and I hope they ditch the cross on top and just sell them as lemon buns all year round.
Look, that sounds yummy but that is a LEMON BUN and should not masquerade as a hot cross bun!!!
Yiayoula · 17/04/2022 17:00

Tesco finest hot cross buns are the food of the gods.

No chocolate, caramel ( salted or otherwise ) , cheese, onion, masala ( WTF ? ) , or Marmite.

And no jam either, sorry !
Just sliced and buttered.
Or sometimes I go wild and toast them ……

TheUnexpectedPickle · 17/04/2022 17:14

I just remembered!

When the weird flavours first became a thing, my grandad bought home a pack (I think they were chocolate orange but this story has been told so many times by my family that the flavor may have changed)

My nan was horrified, made him take them back and told him to "have some respect for Jesus" 😆

fitflopqueen · 17/04/2022 17:25

I am not over keen on the dried fruit in HCBs but the Aldi 3 chocolate HCBs are delicious - no fruit so shouldn't be called a HCB, just call them chocolate tea cakes for toasting.
