Why do people get blind drunk at concerts?

DD went to a large concert venue last night which she said was marred by women (she said many were over 40 - i.e. my age 🤣) getting so drunk they were falling down the stairs, spilling drinks on people and in one case, accidentally hurting someone in the row in front by falling on them. She said it was so cringy and embarrassing.

DD and her mates couldn’t afford to get drunk even if they wanted to as a bottle of wine was £32!

I did notice the same thing last time I went to a concert, the row behind us all got so blotto they had to leave before the end, one woman lost her shoes, her boyfriend stormed out with embarrassment and another slipped over on the steps when she spilt her drink and hurt herself and was carried out by security.

Because it’s fun?

Florenz · 17/04/2022 09:23

Because they are stupid. Why pay to attend a concert and then get so drunk you can't remember any of it? I find it pathetic.

veronicagoldberg · 17/04/2022 09:23

@Dumblebum

Because it’s fun?

Is it?

x2boys · 17/04/2022 09:23

Because they enjoy it
They probably start drinking before the concert I imagine .

Nitgel · 17/04/2022 09:25

What concert ?

crackingreward · 17/04/2022 09:25

It's not just concerts, is it? People drink during social events all the time. For many it wouldn't occur to them not to. I think it's just the mentality.

Antarcticant · 17/04/2022 09:25

They'll be getting tanked up beforehand on supermarket booze.

gunnersgold · 17/04/2022 09:25

Because some people get blind drunk everywhere !

x2boys · 17/04/2022 09:25

For some people yes it is fun ,here's the thing we all enjoy different things some people enjoy going out with their mates getting drunk some people don't.

Shoxfordian · 17/04/2022 09:25

Was she really bothered about them being drunk or about how she couldn’t afford to be? Grin

They’re probably having a good time op

AgentProvocateur · 17/04/2022 09:26

I think a lot of the time it’s because it’s a rare night out, so they’ve probably met up for dinner and drinks earlier in the day and got carried away. Particularly if you’re travelling to a venue in a city that involves an overnight stay. It always seems to be groups of women from further afield that do this (I used to work in a big gig venue)

FannylovesDick · 17/04/2022 09:26

@Nitgel

What concert ?
Why?
SlashBeef · 17/04/2022 09:27

Messy drunks will get like that whether they're at a concert, a pub, club or even their own back garden. Just wasted experience after wasted experience because they get so sloppy they have to be babysat 🤷‍♀️

maddening · 17/04/2022 09:28

People are out of practice and get carried away, probably went for a meal first, have a couple of cocktails and you're away, easily done imo.

Chickychoccyegg · 17/04/2022 09:32

Why was she feeling embarrassed when she didn't even know them, unless they fell on her/spilt their drink on her , maybe she should mind her own business and not be so judgey?
Often young people think people in their 40s are too old to go out and get drunk (I am, the hangovers arent worth it these days Grin, so i dont drink , others still enjoy it)

Very true and wine is always a killer it creeps up on you particularly in the nice weather!
Stretchandsnap · 17/04/2022 09:37

I’ve noticed this too, I took my mum to see pretty woman recently as a birthday treat and there was a group of women who were so drunk, they were shouting out at the cast and singing along, and generally making tits of themselves - I was cringing. They looked to be in their 50s. It was grim as it was spoiling the performance for everyone around them, luckily we weren’t too close.

I will keep my eyes open for this as we come into summer Shock

CounsellorTroi · 17/04/2022 09:46

When I first started going to concerts and shows in the 80s it wasn’t done/allowed to take drinks into the auditorium. Pre show and interval drinks had to be finished before you went in. It seems to be very common nowadays to drink during a show.

Birdie746 · 17/04/2022 09:52

Got a concert booked in June. I never go to shows and i'm remembering why. Reading this thread I can't wait for shrieking drunk women and drunk knob head lager louts around me, no doubt singing loudly for the benefit of everyone around them. Look at me everyone! I'm a drunk irritant and I know all the words!

Intermsof · 17/04/2022 10:04

It wasn't Little Mix was it? I agree about wine. It does creep up on you. I'm better off on fizz than flat wine.

Isn't that the whole pont of a concert though, I haven't been to one in years but I remember going to festivals in my youth dancing and singing along ,often the group put the song back to the audience to sing .
Menora · 17/04/2022 10:19

She said that she was worried about people falling on her and spilling drinks on her, or slipping on spilled drinks. The O2 high rafters are pretty unnerving as it is, added in lots of rowdy blind drunk women. She did say it was just cringe watching them act ridiculously. Her and friends didn’t get drunk as they wanted to remember the night seeing an artist they like

I guess it depends what you are going to a concert for. Pre kids I oved seeing live bands and it's seeing them and hearing the music that makes the night fun. Id never drink much as I want to remember it (and don't want to miss anything by making multiple trips to the loo!)

However I think some people just look at it as an reason for having a night out with their mates. If they don't do it much I think they try too hard and end up drinking way more than they mean to.

Also as a pp said, they are older and have more money to spend on the overpriced drinks.

bruffin · 17/04/2022 10:33

@Dumblebum

Because it’s fun?
Went to see Genesis the other week nearly £200 a ticket. people behind drunk and just kept causing problems, whats the point, they may have been having fun at the time, but they wouldnt remember it afterwards. Same with the theatre, people coming in half time with 2 glasses of wine, what a waste of a ticket.

If you need to get drunk to have fun at a concert then you probably not that into the band in the first place.
Menora totally agree with you abut O2, its dangerous!
