Why do people get blind drunk at concerts?

DD went to a large concert venue last night which she said was marred by women (she said many were over 40 - i.e. my age 🤣) getting so drunk they were falling down the stairs, spilling drinks on people and in one case, accidentally hurting someone in the row in front by falling on them. She said it was so cringy and embarrassing.

DD and her mates couldn’t afford to get drunk even if they wanted to as a bottle of wine was £32!

I did notice the same thing last time I went to a concert, the row behind us all got so blotto they had to leave before the end, one woman lost her shoes, her boyfriend stormed out with embarrassment and another slipped over on the steps when she spilt her drink and hurt herself and was carried out by security.

Honestly I don't get it either. I go to a lot of big outdoor gigs costing £100+ with bands who only tour every few years. I couldn't imagine getting paralytically drunk to the point where I couldn't either enjoy or remember it. I've seen people carried out of gigs, throwing up on themselves (or worse - on others), pissing in the crowd etc and it's disgusting and pointless.

carefullycourageous · 17/04/2022 10:34

Because they are people who drink too much. The country has quite a lot of middle-aged problem drinkers.

Menora · 17/04/2022 10:47

02 does seem to be a particularly dangerous venue to get pissed in I wonder how many drunk serious injuries happen there?

I remember going there in 2007 for a concert and there were not as many bars open and less drunk people. You def couldn’t order it on an app! I noticed in the last 5 years more drunk people at indoor venues than in the past. I would expect this at a festival - where you are able to move away and relocate. Indoor seated venue you cannot move

It doesn't give anyone, particularly drunk men the right to use my shoulders to prop themselves up with, throw whatever liquid from their cup over surrounding people etc. Read the room. If you're seated and everyone around you is able to view the stage, don't just you and your pissed up mate jump up and start jigging about. If no one else is singing and it's obviously a special moment/song, keep the cringy catawauling to yourself.

I like to get drunk at a concert, and I’m over 40.

I really don't understand this. Getting drunk at a party - fair enough but a concert?
Menora · 17/04/2022 11:09

Yeah I understand a festival or a party but when you are seated no one can move away from you when you are drunk so you can ruin other peoples experiences

Nothing worse and more embarrassing than middle aged people getting drunk and making a fool of themselves. Grow up

Because it’s fun?
Not for the rest of us it isn't.

If I go to a concert, I want to see the concert not a load of twats being twatty.

WhiteJellycat · 17/04/2022 11:14

First time back in a theatre for years and had about 20 pissed up woman on a group birthday party. Dancing and singing, blocking the view standing up. Luckily behind us but when asked to sit down I could hear them shouting over the band. Then they got up to dance in the ilse I could hear them shouting at the band asking if they wanted a fight! One decided to dance right in front of the centre stage. They got kicked out with five minutes of the end. Get smashed why not but spoiling it purposely for others isnt on.

Fulmine · 17/04/2022 11:16

How? They won't remember any of it anyway, and they'll probably feel absolutely dreadful the next day. Plus they've totally wasted a hell of a lot of money on a concert they can't remember and wildly overpriced booze.

As a mid 40s woman who got drunk at a concert with her best friend last week......

Because I rarely get the chance to do it because of child care.
Because I'd been looking forward to this concert for 2 1/2 years and it had been post poned for Covid three times.
Because having a drink is part of a night out with friends for me.
Because I like to forget about being a single mum and remember what it's like to be "me", singing along to old songs that I remember from years ago, with my friend and a glass of wine.

Not because I want to be judged by younger women rolling their eyes at me Hmm

You do you and I'll do me

ApolloandDaphne · 17/04/2022 11:24

There is a difference between having some drinks, getting a bit pissed and having fun and getting absolutely hammered to the point it ruins things for everyone else at the concert.

HangingOver · 17/04/2022 11:31

I used to do this a fair bit. In my case it's because I'm a binge pattern alcoholic and couldn't not.

I loved my first sober gig....I danced my little butt off and remembered every song Grin

Can you do you without falling over onto people or sloshing your drink on them though Grin

Yabu. Unless you have mobility issues or are a child no one should go seated at a concert. Unless it Michael buble or Daniel o'donnell!

I like a drink beforehand but not during as I can't be arsed to keep going to the toilet!

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/04/2022 11:48

Because it’s fun to have a night out getting drunk.

Because middle aged women have as much right to do that as any other group, without being labelled as cringey or embarrassing.

The O2 is hardly a muso venue, people are there for a good time

Why was she worried about having drinks spilt on her? It’s insanity to go to gig in clothes you aren’t happy to get messed up.

So overall, tell her to look up agism, sexism, and lighten the fuck up. Also while we are here the word cringe.. is really cringe.

MasterBeth · 17/04/2022 11:48

You do you and I’ll do me is the motto of a cunt when you doing you spoils the night for everyone else.

I'm older than you and , I do judge you.

Your behaviour is selfish and idiotic.

There's nothing sexist or ageist in pointing out anti- social behaviour.
I8toys · 17/04/2022 11:54

Sometimes I don't think it's just alcohol being spilt or thrown! 😂

Are you joking, you would be ok with sitting in wet jeans all night if someone spilt a drink all over you?

Missing the point rather but I always think they must spend the whole of the concert going to the toilet.
